So, I know this has been raised before, but I haven't seen it addressed. The question is, does Harmonix plan on allowing PS3 users to back-up their save files? I ask because I want to go from 60GB to 120GB or 200GB. However, the save file for Rock Band cannot be copied or backed up. Should be a simple enough patch.

I've been thinking the same thing for my 60GB PS3. So I'll second that request.

I'm not sure this is true or not, but someone commented that by using the back-up file utility included in the XMB settings will negate the "no copy" lock on the Rock Band file. Unfortunately, I can't test this myself not having another Hard drive around to try this with.

I wanted to copy my files to another user name and was wondering the same thing...

When I switched to a 250GB HDD, I ran the complete hard drive backup utility. All the data was copied just fine. My background was reset and my video thumbnails, but I think that's it. You can at least give it a shot and if it doesn't work, just plug your old drive back in. The only problem I see is that you'll have to find an external drive with up to 60GB free for the backup. Note: you can have stuff on the external drive, it won't mess up any existing data.

I guess the notion behind locking the save data is well intentioned for preserving rankings etc, but I'm in a situation where my ps3 is dying and I have hours upon hours upon hours of playing into rock band. When I go to exchange my bad ps3 for another at the store, am I supposed to shrug off losing all of that? Basically I'm not willing to return the defective ps3 because of it, hoping for some miracle that lets me copy the data to a usb flash drive. I have a limited time to return the ps3, I believe by the middle of January, and I'm hoping there's some update that unlocks the data before then, otherwise I've put a lot of time into an utterly great game that will just be dumped, and there's nothing for me to do about it. I shouldn't have to buy another hard drive and do some full data copy to do this. I can't be the only one in this situation. Not to mention the downloaded bonus songs, which I"ll probably have to spend money on a second time with a new system? What am I supposed to do? I've purchased all the Harmonix guitar games and the full rock band set, so I think I've put a lot of money into this company. It'd be nice for my situation to get some consideration.

Yeah, I've got a 320 GB USB drive that has plenty of space on it for my PS3 data. I'm gonna run my own test and see if I get the same results you're showing.
I'm not ready to upgrade the drive just yet, but I want to know it will be painless when I am.

It's true, you should be able to copy the save file, but still not a big problem. Just delete everything that you don't need to backup, then run a full backup. That should keep the file small enough for a thumb drive perhaps. Also, the PS store keeps track of everything you bought, so you can always just redownload items for free.

That's true, but it doesn't help you keep your 1 million fans you won through hours of hard rocking. You'd be reset back to zero.

The backup utility on the PS3 DOES NOT allow you to backup game saves.

The argument that it was done to protect online stats is pretty silly.
A) The 360 can copy the save to a thumb drive.
B) Unreal Tournament, one of the most competitive games ever, lets you copy the save.
Also, save files are able to be copied by default, so somebody at Harmonix had to consciously decided to do this. And I want them to put forth some effort to fix it. The only other game I can't copy the save for is Eye of Judgment, which doesn't save progress since it's pretty much multiplayer only and scores are on the server.
Honestly, if we're not getting the Les Paul compatibility, at least give us this. This should be really quick and easy.

NO, it cannot.
It can copy the save to Microsoft's proprietary memory units that support DRM, and the result can only be used by the profile under which it was originally created. If you copy it to another gamertag/profile, it becomes flagged as tainted and can no longer be used for achievements or leaderboards and the like.
It cannot be copied to any USB mass storage devices on the xbox at all.

If the ps3 full system backup utility won't copy the data, am I pretty much screwed then? This is about the most frustrating thing ever. I just want to play a good game! Merry Christmas, all your data is going to be lost...:(

I've got another view on this. My PS3 has locked up twice in the middle of saving progress. The first time I lose EVERYTHING!!! The second time I did not. Has anyone ever experienced that? It should atleast let you back it up to the hard drive in case of a meltdown like that. If their concern is cheating. Something has to be done about this!
