View Full Version : Buying PS3 Slim for TB:RB (already have Wii) - Does it make sense?

So I'm in a situation where I own Wii. I haven't previously owned any music game (waited for the right one) and now I'm very much wanting to get TB:RB Limited Edition Bundle. While the Wii-version has had great reviews it still seems that the HD-versions of it are nicer. I'm not into graphics that much, but I do want the full experience.

This has got me thinking about getting an HD-console, namely PS3. X360 Elite is cheaper and perhaps better for HMX games, but I'd have to pay for A) wireless adapter B) XBOX Live et cetera. I could buy PS3 Slim making payments with zero interest. On the other hand, there isn't much other PS3 games I'm interested in (maybe Soul Calibur IV, Batman: AA).

Of course Wii HD is coming withing two years time and the LE instruments will most likely be compatible with that.

What would you do?

About the music quality... Currently, as I live in a small apartment, I'm using my HD tellys speakers as my main sound system so I'm not sure if PS3's superior sound would be so superior to Wii's.

PS3 Slim has Bluray on it, and you have an HDTV. Match made in heaven, so I'd go for that over the XBOX.

That being said, the Wii version is still great, the only big differences are the Sgt. Pepper's dreamscape and some of the bits before the dreamscape starts (The Beatles running onstage, etc.).

I have owned all 3 consoles and I would be cautious of buying a PS3 just for one game. I personally would save your money and get the Wii version.

I guess it all boils down to what you WANT and what you NEED and what you could USE.
Thinking of buying a Blu-ray? Well, here is one with built in wi-fi that will automatically up date ALL the time....AND will play beautiful games in 720p! AND will allow you to download all the dlc and demo's etc without haveing to pay fees to go online to do it! Buy the PS3 if you never want to update a blu-ray or game system again!!!!!!!!

BUT, if you do NOT need all that, I would agree with the other guy, to buy one for just ONE game....no.

If you simply want a better Rock Band experience, keep your $300 and buy DLC instead, or an additional guitar and some microphones :-)

The fact that you'd need to make payments in order to pay for a new system alone should tell you it's probably not the greatest idea of the century.

I personally own a PS3 only for Rock Band, but financially it's not a big deal. That being said, had DLC been available a year earlier for Wii, I never would have purchased a PS3. There are benefits, sure, but not worth 300$.

Well about the payment thing... I do have $299 but if there's an option to pay with payments, it's better for me. I already own a BD player, Sony S550. I can always give that to me parents, though.

I have played with PS3 before but there isn't really any games for it other than the few. Moreover, I really like Wii in that as opposed to PS3 or X360 it makes you physically active. I did my share of couch-gaming when I was younger so now I don't want to waste time that way.

So if I got PS3 Slim I'd buy TB:RB for it and they maybe max 8-10 games ever (right now, aside from Batman and Soul Calibur, there isn't any games for PS3 that I'm interested in). I could always give my BD-player for my parents, as they need one, and use PS3 Slim as my BD-player (I already have Oppo upconverting DVD player which does a better job than PS3).

You are probably right in that I should just get the Wii version and not buy PS3 Slim.

TB:RB is the first game in the Rock Band series I can say this about with absolutely no compunction: Get it for the Wii.

I've also played TB:RB on a friend's Xbox360, and there is absolutely no loss of game experience and very, very little difference in graphics with the Wii version if you have your Wii hooked up with component cables and are running in 480P/widescreen. (I assume you have component cables if you have an HDTV, right?)

Save your money for additional USB microphones, future DLC, and of course a sweet surround sound setup!

In short YES! HD wins.

Yes I do.

As someone who has been playing on Hi-Def on a 42" flatscreen, I can tell you it was worth every penny I sunk into it. Total immersion.

I have pretty much done the same thing already (well, with the non-slim PS3 anyway) to get a better experience with Rock Band 2. I would definitely suggest getting the PS3. It is really nice not having to deal with the storage limitations of the Wii. I really haven't used it that much for other games, but I use the web browser all of the time (primarily because it's compatible with Pandora). The system is great for playing movies, and you can download free game demos for plenty of games.

I would say yes. Also, getting 8-10 games isn't terribly little. I got a 360 just for RB1, and the only games I have are RB1, RB2, TBRB, and the Orange Box. Besides, it's probably good to have a more powerful alternative to the Wii but still keep the Wii.

I bought the PS3 just for GTA4 when it first came out (I was not going to pay for XBox Live), and I was fine with that decision because I didn't have a Blu-ray player. I already had a Wii, but I really consider the Wii to be more geared towards delivering unique gaming experiences. For games that are released cross-platform, it makes much more sense to buy the game for PS3 unless the Wii version offers something really cool and unique in terms of control.

So if a PS3 isn't going to break the bank for you and you think you'll get enough enjoyment and use out of it, then go for it. Thing to keep in mind is that the controllers you get for TB:RB kinda lock you into a platform for when you decide to branch out to RB1 or RB2 or even the GH series.

Yes it makes sence.

The Wii has too many limtations.

Sure it works but its third place in a three horse race.

Before the Wiifolk get all riled up, I do own all three consoles so I am just speaking from direct, hands on experience. Not from a defensive posture based on what I own.

The Wii is great for Wii style games and classic Nintendo stuff.

Get a PS3, you wont regret it.

As someone that has all 3 consoles I would say get either a PS3 or 360 for the music game genre, the Wii's limited DLC abilities and lack of a import function make it a poor choice for the music game genre. 360 seems slightly better supported than PS3 by both Neversoft and Harmonix. Take a look at the Xbox 360 Elite.

Well I'm not into DLC that much so I'd bet my 8GB SDHC card for Wii is plenty enough.

Thanks for the correction about X360 BTW. So the fee is for online gaming and not for downloading DLC, system updates and such. Still, X360 is not wireless (my router is in another room), it's reported to be very noisy and it does have that HW reliability issue. On the other hand, PS3 Slim has been reported to be noisy as well.

It does seem that neither of the HD consoles are good choices right now... Especially if I'm getting for a only handful of games (or one game).

I think I'm going to buy the Wii version.

The HW reliability issue, as I understand it, is all but gone--I wouldn't know because my 360 has actually lasted me two years and change without trouble. The noise is definitely there, though.

If you absolutely, positively have to get an HD console to play RB (and the games you've listed are multiplatform, as well), I'd suggest the 360 since that's the primary development platform.

However, I think you're making the right choice, budgetarily, to go for the Wii version.

I ate my own words and ordered a PS3 Slim. My reasons... Well putting gaming aside it just made sense. I do own a BD-player (Sony S550) but my parents need one too (they currently have my Oppo dvd-player). I'm going to give my BD-player to them, have Slim do the BD stuff and use my trusty Oppo for playing DVDs (I have DVDs of different regions so I can't use Slim for that anyway). I'm a little worried about the loudness of Slim but hopefully it won't be too loud.

Now I can get TB:RB (PS3) with a bit better graphics and sound, and I can use my instruments with my friends' PS3s.
