I've heard this number tossed around a few times in videos and the setlist part of the website, is this true? 40 songs is a good amount, but I was expecting considerably more, I mean isn't this game supposed to have 40 venues?

I have not heard anything about the number of venues, 40 sounds like too many to me, I would think more like 8 or 10.

They have 40 licensed tracks, this does not include bonus songs. Also they plan on releasing 100s of songs as DLC, so I think that is more than enough for one game.

Besides all this you can play these songs as a vocalist, bassist, guiatarist, or drummer, or as a whole band, the game has a lot of replay value. I expect to be playing this game for years and years!

Hmmm... I really hope they have more than 40 songs, I was hoping for more than guitar hero which has 74 songs currently plus downloadable content.

And I'm sure that Rock Band will have some nice downloadable content, but I don't have much extra money to spend on that...

they have said 40 tracks (not included bonus songs we assume)

And they also said 40-ish venues. From everything that was said during E3 (specificly charater creation, choosing a hometown) and from reading the devs Rock Blogs I'm thinking you might be able to choose where you want to play. So out of all the venues you get to pick where you want to play.

Your decision might effect how much money you get paid and also clothing and other bonus's you can unlock. Here's hoping anyway. Re-playablility FTW!

so, if i do arithmatic right there will be one venue for each song?

If you watch the gamespot video, Alex says that you can choose your character's hometown (Boston, L.A., or Chicago) and that will determine the path they travel around the world on tour. So you'll get different venues depending on that, independent of the number of songs.

i watched that video and i heard about the home towns but didnt hear about how they each have a different path you travel, or that you cant get to some from certain towns

Most bands play about 30-40 unique places in one tour.......so it makes sense.

40 songs is great considering i will be doing 4 careers, each one a lil different each time (if its true about different paths every tour). Plus DLC i think i'll be overwhelmed by songs to play

I was wondering about the 100's of songs that are coming out after the game, I wonder whos going to actually be doing that, i mean thats going to be a lot of work! can harmonix do all of that in-house? crazy

That's 40 licensed tracks. We haven't announced bonus songs.

For that purpose Harmonix has set up the "Music Advisory Board" which will advise Harmonix on what tracks/albums to include. The Board is going to be made up of Little Steven (Of Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band fame) and many other "celebrity musicians" who have not been announced yet.

Since Harmonix themselves have come out and said that they are going to release at least 2 new songs for download every week ("game levels" as they call them, I say songs although it could very well mean full albums....) I believe that they know their limits and the amount of work it takes to program a "level".

Thus, I believe that they know what they are capable of and will be able to reach their lofty goal without much issue.

This is one aspect of the game that has me VERY excited and will add to the fun for years to come.

Although, why someone is complaining about the nice and round number of 40 is well beyond me ;)

I also saw mentioned in some interview or article that there will be 40 venues. Assuming that's right, I'm guessing the reasoning is so we can have many, many different locations to play considering the constant stream of DLC that will hopefully keep this game going for years. If, 2 years from now, we had about 1500 songs to choose from, but only 8 venues, that would get kinda old for some people pretty quick, so by providing 40 venues now, they're hopefully able to keep the game fresh for longer...

awesome, I hope there are just as many bonus songs. and if GH1 and 2 are any indication, I think there will be. Sweet.

I wonder how Neversoft will be handling that.. will they even have any? 80s doesnt =-( because of the major lack of songs in 80's for the price I don't think it's a purchase for me anymore.. just too much cash, and as much as I love GH.. that's just like a kick to the groin.. I'll wait till it's cheaper

I agree. I think the 40 venues is to also give the World Tour mode more of an epic feel instead of Guitar Hero's lame excuse for a career mode. I mean no big band plays in just 8 venues over the course of their career. Although, they also don't only play covers. :o

I'm calling it-----

Each city gets their own unique venue. Makes sense doesn't it? Every stop on the world tour should be a little different

In the gamespot Demo, Neversoft claims over 70 songs. They say that too many big names wanted into the game that couldn't fit into the career track, so some of the unlocks will still be major label artists. There will also be some indie tracks.

I really hope Harmonix announces and confirms something similar soon. Downloadable tracks are super and all, but no one should delude themselves into thinking they're going to be free. The game is still going to be 60 dollars, so it better come with a comparable soundtrack to GH3. I'm not spending 60 dollars just for the opportunity to spend MORE money on downloadable tracks.

Even if the 70 is correct, Rock Band will have 2 separate completely different ways to play the songs. That has to account for something, eh? I'd be fine with 40. I think playing all 40 songs in each career mode would surpass the game time for 70 songs on GHIII.

Exactly. There's a 40 song guitar career. A 40 song singing career. And a 40 song drum career. Not to mention likely 4 difficulty levels for each one. That's a LOT of freaking game play. Granted, you need to buy a mic and/or drums to play more than just the guitar, but still...I'm perfectly fine with Rock Band offering 40 songs compared to GH3's 70.

I think 40 is a decent number of songs. With the included bonus songs maybe we will have at least 50. Who knows, maybe we will get lucky and have a few free downloads at launch :-D

Interesting idea... a single or small pack of download tracks for free would really get people used to the download concept.

I think there would be significant challenges to making that happen though, like getting a band willing to give away their music. MS's stranglehold on their version of the download service has shown them to be stingy about free downloads.

There are literally thousands of indie bands who would give their music away for free just to get their name out there... Sure it might not be a major label band, but if it is good and it is free, who will argue?

Gimme 10 Metallica songs and I'll play this game forever. Anyway, on the top5 songs from GH2, at least 3 of them are definitely bonus ones. So, I my hopes are higher on the bonus ones than the carreer.

100 songs in the first year!

Let GH3 have 70 songs.

There is a competition between GH and RB. But there is competition between everything. There is no reason that both games cannot succeed.

It is not as if FF is the only RPG.

think about it....40 songs for career mode, but like 20 bonus songs you can unlock....along with downloadable content :)

96 downloadable songs in total for the first 48 weeks... which is the first year, technically...
so by next year we'll have 136 songs, not including bonus tracks... so, probobly right around 150 with bonus tracks... I dunno about you... but that sounds pretty good to me...

benjamin

I would easily assume more than 14 bonus tracks.

At least 96 songs over the first year. Thats the minimum, 2 songs per week, besides that I'm sure there will be times that more songs are released in a week, also there will certainly be full albums being released, the first week will add 9 songs due to the entire Who album.

I also think 20 is a good number for bonus songs, I think it will be right around there.

The only way there will be competition between GH and RB is the price of RB. Otherwise, it would demolish GH in sales. It's GH... plus other amazing stuff. It's like having a competition between a stock BMW and a fully loaded leather interior with spinners BMW. With a sound system. and a spoiler :)

And look at what the downloads for GH2 on the X360 has...12 songs from the first game...no new ones for download...i think RB got it on the downloads section...this insures replayablity...
RB FTW!

What about the people whose favorite part is the Guitar? The big thing for Rock Band is the Drums and Voice, for those who only care about Guitar and Bass it is not a huge upgrade.

Both will sell well, regardless of price.

There is room for more than one rhythm game on the market.

Its the entire experience of playing with other people. The closest experience some people will get to being in a band. Plus, new songs and new solo techniques.. dude, its a huge improvevment over GH in every category [unless you want the new 'battle mode ]

I'm not denying they both will, i'll be buying both. But I have not paid attention to GH3 half as much as RB since i heard about both.

40 songs is kind of slim for $200 even with bonus songs. As a possible solution they could package MS points or download codes with the peripherals, so you get 40 songs with the game/guitar combo, 10 downloads if you purchase a second guitar, 10 more with the drum kit, etc.

i think that 40 is a great number i mean gh1 and gh2 only had 40 plus bonus songs (and we all know rb will have bonus) but they had 4 difficulties which were each pretty big step ups from the last and i still play gh1 and gh2 a lot so if you do the math lets say theres 20 bonus songs thats 60 songs times 4 difficulties (probably) which is 240 songs (kind of) and multiply that times another four (guitar, bass, drums, vocals) is 960 .....now that is a lot but its like every 1 out of 60 (with bonus) songs has 16 varietys even though this game is expensive it has a very high replay value much higher than gh2 even though gh2 has lasted pretty long. and its still alive

That's how I'm looking at it. Each song is 4 different "play styles" with the instruments. Add in the difficulty (and I'm sure the achievements will pull in replayability...for me at least) and all the content they are promising at launch and after will be plenty to keep us busy.
