View Full Version : Germany's view on the Top 50 Rock Bands (apparently)

I'm sorry if this doesn't really belong here, but I just need to get this out. RTL, a privately owned television broadcaster (who is really popular in Germany) has compiled a list of what they think are the best 50 rock acts of all time. The worst thing is, it's not just some BS someone threw together, but they actually claim credibility with this, saying that they did "extensive research" on the subject. Here goes:
1) Deep Purple
2) Queen
3) Pink Floyd
4) Rolling Stones
5) BAP
6) Dire Straits
7) Tina Turner
8) Bon Jovi
9) Die Toten Hosen
10) U2
11) R.E.M.
12) Bruce Springsteen
13) Udo Lindenberg
14) Metallica
15) Brian Adams
16) Scorpions
17) AC/DC
18) Guns'n'Roses
19) Jethro Tull
20) Simple Minds
21) Creedance Clearwater Revival
22) Alanis Morisette
23) Meat Loaf
24) Led Zeppelin
25) Green Day
26) Linkin Park
27) Red Hot Chili Peppers
28) Black Sabbath
29) Manfred Mann's Earth Band
30) Foreigner
31) Emerson, Lake + Palmer
32) Marillion
33) HIM
34) Police
35) Status Quo
36) ZZ Top
37) Coldplay
38) Sweet
39) Janis Joplin
40) Gary Moore
41) Avil Lavigne
42) Nirvana
43) Uriah Heep
44) Cure
45) Suzi Quattro
46) Saga
47) Alice Cooper
48) Nickelback
49) Oasis
50) Iron Maiden
I could point out everything that is wrong with this list, but you'll be able to do so by yourself.

I was scratching my head at that. I though for sure those two and even Golden Earring would be on that list. Wasn't surprised to see BAP or Die Toten Hosen on their at all (makes sense for a German list).

This list must have been compiled by Germany's version of MTV. I mean, there's some bands in the right place, but so many "One of these things is not like the others" on the list. Brian Adams at 15? Beatles off the list entirely? This is so hilarious I just had to post twice.

One thing I have to mention was that they were mostly going by sales figures, which explains the number of pop acts (Avril Lavigne, Linkin Park, Nickelback) on that list. You can argue whether you call them "Rock" at all, of course, and I highly doubt that they outsold some bands that have been around for decades.
The lack of The Beatles (and The Who, by the way) is probably because they had little clips for each artist, showing footage and playing one of their songs... and they probably didn't obtain the rights for audio/video footage by those bands, or thought they were two expensive, and thus eliminated them from the list. :p
EDIT: Aerosmith is also not there. And Boston. Hmmm....

I apologize for that. I missed it because it was in parentheses, and I only glossed over it, and I'm being liberal on that. While I don't like them at all, Linkin Park is definitely not pop.

As much as I love LP. They're definitely not the greatest band in the world. If anything, they'd be on a top 100, or a top 200 bands. Not the Top 50.

Pop and Mainstream Rock are not mutually exclusive. You act like its a dirty word. Add the Beatles, Bon Jovi, Aerosmith, AC/DC, and Nirvana to the pool.
Pop boards and radio have R&B, hip hop, Rock, and even jazz, soul, and blues back in the day.

That's why I called them pop. I'd also call Avenged Sevenfold pop for that matter, even though I like some of their songs (the same is true for Linkin Park), so I'm not just saying that to discredit them. The term "pop" itself does not necessarily define a genre, but can also just mean "popular music". Actually, it was used to define the genre that just happened to be popular when the term was made up, and it prevailed to this day.
I've actually seen people say that Metallica is pop. :P

I also feel like they put an especially quetionable choice just one or two ranks above a really great one, like they consciously wanted to insult them. Obviously, Iron Maiden got it the worst.
Another great band that is absent: The Eagles.

Is this directed at me? I just pointed out that I do NOT use it as an insult.
Anyway, I just tried my hands at this. While certainly not perfect, this list that I made up on 15 minutes should be way better than what this television show offered, and that list was probably made over the course of a week by a group of people who got paid for it....
EDIT: Well apparently no one cares and it was annoying to scroll past it, so I removed it.

It's a German top 50 list. Germany is arguably the most prog-loving country in the world (with Holland a close second), and both Marillion and Saga have a huge following there, so I'm not surprised in the least to see them on that list.

If that impression ensued, then I worded that post wrongly.
What I meant to say is: "I call them pop, but not to insult them. I just use the term to refer to popular music, which is what the term originally was used for, anyway."
I actually edited the post you quoted to prevent anyone from thinking that I call them "pop" just because I don't like them. English isn't my first language, so I might have just messed up.

It wouldn't be that harsh. It would only be a temp ban. And a link to the free sampler of their more recent stuff. :D
Might I ask what albums you've listened to, though? Because if you only know Kayleigh and/or any other singles, I can understand you considering them average, because their singles tend to be extremely radio-friendly and rather dumbed down compared to the rest of their material.

Openly admitting to preferring Hogarth era to Fish era is worthy of castration in the prog community. Also Marillion are good, but the albums I've heard just some like a less-progressive-less-technical version of Genesis without master Peter Gabriel.

Why would I attack you for it? It's a bit of a run-on sentence, but that's forgivable. :D
I enjoy both the Fish and the Hogarth albums, but I like the Hogarth material more, both songwriting-wise and because Hogarth is probably my favorite vocalist of all time.
You can already order the live album of Happiness is the Road (http://www.marillion.com/music/racket/cologne.htm) here, by the way. I haven't heard it yet myself, but I did go to that tour and the show was great as usual. Rothery's solo's are goosebump-inducing live, and Hogarth's voice is as good today as it was when they started out.
Marbles live is pretty good as well, but the main downside is that it's a live rendition of the one disc retail edition, and therefor misses some of the best songs (Genie and the 20 minute epic Ocean Cloud).
If you're going to order from Marillion's own site anyway, I strongly recommend picking up the Friends and Family.. Both discs were recorded during one of the Marillion weekends (the only one that I have managed to attend so far).Friends is a recording of the Satirday show, in which they played various covers (my personal favorites are. Keane's Bedshaped, Good Morning, Good Morning, and Britney Spear's Toxic). Family is a great gig in which they played a lot of Fish material (which sounds even better with Hogarth on vocals) and other rarities, and some band favorites. Highly recommended.

Openly admitting to preferring Hogarth era to Fish era is worthy of castration in the prog community. Also Marillion are good, but the albums I've heard just some like a less-progressive-less-technical version of Genesis without master Peter Gabriel.
A great many people in the prog community are old farts who don't want 'progressive' music at all, they just want bands that sound like Genesis, Yes and King Crimson. Hence the hate for Hogarth. But I have to agree with franticfish' assessment that early Marillion sounds a lot, maybe even too much, like Gabriel era Genesis. Fish is a good lyricist, but I think his songwriting influences weren't too fantastic (which also becomes apparent in his rather crappy solo work). However, I still feel that Rothery and Trewavas are fantastic musicians, and their performances make the early stuff very much worth listening to.
Despite what the prog community as a whole might think, I think the band didn't really come into their own until Brave, when Hogarth had found his footing in the band. The music they make is by no means prog in the classical sense, but that's what makes it interesting, I feel. Albums like Brave, Afraid of Sunlight and Marbles are lightyears beyond anything they made with Fish.
I listened to their first two, though looking back at it they may have been half-assed listens on my part.
Timmay, as you might surmise from what I've written above, their newer material is extremely different from their early stuff. The band themselves realize this as well, and have made a free Crash Course (http://www.ilike.com/artist/Marillion/album/Crash+Course) sampler to give people an impression of how they sound now. It's free, so no reason not to give it a listen. :)

Of the four that really stormed the world with their blend of Prog Rock (IQ, Pallas, Pendragon and Marillion), Pendragon was the one that really stood out to me the most. I absolutely adore every second of the time that I listen to them and I want to own all their albums on CD.
I have two out of three versions of The Masquerade Overture, I'm only missing one. :D
