what do you think is the best Punk Band ever, I say the stooges (I don't count the clash because they became much more all around rock and roll and ska then Punk, otherwise it would be them, you can count them though). They had the best frontman and were pretty much the first real Punk Band.

I'd say Zen Arcade. You won't be disappointed.

As for the question, I'll say Joy Division.

Saw both of these bands live, Pennywise was decent but nothing amazing. The Q u ee r s played to themselfs and played this place sucks twice.....I used to love that song now it feels cheep like we only played it because we knew we had to *sigh* kinda vibe. My friend and I started yelling for a encore.....they came back, played one song realy fast then left.

Needless to say I don't like them nearly enough to call them one of the best.

Sex Pistols
The Clash
The Ramones
New York Dolls
Joy Division
Crass(not a single mention before me? Shame)
GG Allin
Dead Kennedys
Misfits(even if the metalheads ruin it for me)
Subhumans

Dead Kennedys for me so far through in my exploration of punk. There is this one band I want to check out I would put of here as well. They had an obnoxious looking name starting with an I but made up for it in the musical content.

Black Flag, Dead Kennedys, Bad Brains, Minor Threat, 7seconds, Crass, and Hellbastard.

As you can see, I tend to favor Hardcore Punk. I like some other forms though (Mainly Post Punk, and Crust Punk.)

Surprised there's not more surf punk on the lists. What about the Cramps or the Dead Milkmen?

Nirvana is not a punk band, and Bleach is not a punk album. Nirvana was influenced by punk and post-punk bands, but they themselves were not punk. That's like calling Radiohead a krautrock band because of Kid A... Just no.

Oh, and the obvious: Husker Du.

I disagree, what makes them not punk. They were influenced by punk, there songs aren't complicated, and grundge is just an era. They were a hardcore punk band, like 2nd generation Stooges (or 3rd generation with Sex Pistols and their like being 2nd generation)

I disagree, what makes them not punk.

Let's make it simple. Would you call the Pixies a punk band? How about Sonic Youth? Interpol?

For that matter, what actually makes Nirvana a punk band?

Also, grunge is most certainly a genre, and definitely not an era... Not that it matters though, since Nirvana weren't really grunge either.

Nirvana sound nothing like Interpool, and they could still be influenced by non punk bands and still be punk. Just look at the kinks and the Velvet Underground, not punk, but extremely influential to the genre.

That's kinda my point. Interpol is a post-punk revival band, which basically means they're closer to punk than Nirvana ever was, and yet no one in their right mind would actually call them a punk band. Why? Because they're too far removed from the genre to still be a part of it, just like Nirvana.

I don't get what you're trying to accomplish with that example either. If anything you've only helped prove my point.

No one answered my question: What exactly makes Nirvana a punk band?

I forgot about Amebix, although they are equally speed metal with sometimes doom metal moments. If we can go as far as crust punk then I'll include Napalm Death, who had some really damn good anarcho/crust punk in their demo era, as well as 11 great grind songs (side-A of Scum)

I think there's also something to hardcore punk that goes beyond the music that the bands play. It's part of the attitude. It's the DIY ethos, the stripped down, bare bones sensibility. The Minutemen don't sound as hard as Black Flag but they had that same set of ethics, that same self starting mentality, that same desire to live and die in the van. It's half sound and half attitude.

They still weren't that different from other garage rock/proto-punk groups of the time. They still had a hard rock and a later glam edge to them.
