I have a satellite internet connection and I have been told that my xbox 360 doesn't recognize the modem. Is there a way I can purchase tracks and download them on to my computer then transfer them over to my xbox 360? There are no satellite modems that are compatible with the xbox 360 so I need to find another way to get tracks from xbox live to the game system. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Does the modem plug into your computer via USB or ethernet? If it's USB, then use an ethernet cable to hook your Xbox to your PC, and turn on internet sharing. The computer will pass the internet connection along to the Xbox. It won't work for online play (the latency with satellite internet is too high), but it'll work for purchasing DLC.

If it plugs in with ethernet, get yourself a router and connect your PC and Xbox to that. The router will allow any number of machines to share the internet connection.

Nope, you cannot purchase Xbox DLC on the PC and then transfer it to the 360. Try what seinman suggested.

I have my xbox connected to an ethernet router along with my PC. If I download it to my PC then will the xbox pick it up from the PC? My problem is my 360 wont connect to xbox live. Something to do with the fact that there is no version number built into my satellite modem...

That's a peculiar situation. If you're connected to a router, and a PC connected to the same router is working properly online, then your Xbox should work fine, too. The version of your modem shouldn't have anything to do with it; in fact, the Xbox itself doesn't even need to know anything about the modem, as long as it's connected to the internet and the router is distributing the data properly.

Edit: Try doing a connection test on your Xbox, and write down the exact error that comes up and post it here. That will help us troubleshoot the problem. I've downloaded DLC through a cell phone's internet connection (tethered to a PC via USB, then shared over to my Xbox via ethernet), so I don't see why a satellite connection wouldn't be able to work for DLC.

Ya, I thought so too but when I talked to tech support at xbox live thats what they told me. I tried manual settings on my 360 as well as the auto settings for my connection. It connects but it tells me there is a error while connecting. It's been a while since I tried connecting but basically thats the gist of the situation.

Try to find out what the exact text of the error is. It may be something as simple as a setting on your router, or it could be more complex. If you can get the error text, at least I can try to figure out a way for you to get around the problem.

OK Here it is...

"Your Console can connect to Xbox LIVE, but your router or gayeway isn't properly responding to ICMP responses.

If your console is connected to a router or gateway, disconnect it and connect directly to the modem. This step helps determine if you have a router configuration problem."

I have tried it both ways. Connected to the router and directly to the modem and I get the same error.

And the other error that periodically pops up is...

"Your network doesn't have a sufficient MTU setting. Xbox live requires a minimum MTU setting of 1364.

On your PC, go to your router configuration web page and set the MTU to Auto or 1364 or higher. If that doesn't work, disconnect your console from the router and connect it directly to the modem."

I have done this as well but still get the same error.

Do you know the make and model number of your modem? Also, who is your internet service provider?

My provider is Hughesnet and the modem is an HN7000S. It's a newer modem.

...this is a hughesnet modem. Not a generic brand.

Do you have a router in addition to the modem, or does the modem itself have multiple ethernet ports that you're using?

The modem has one ethernet port. I have the router connected to it and my PC and 360 are connected to the router. My router is a Netgear FVS318.

From what I gather by reading up on the modem online, the modem itself also has a built in router. Running two routers in a row almost always causes problems. What you want to try is disabling the routing functions of the modem.

Now, I don't know how to do that for your modem, but it probably says somewhere in the instructions. On some modems it's called modem mode, on some it's called bridge mode. Sometimes it's just called disabling NAT, which is a fancy term for what a router does. Look for those words in the manual, and follow the instructions.

Anyway, once you disable the router in the modem, do another network test and see if anything changes. It may just work. If it doesn't, there's still things to try. Just make note of the error message if it changes, or if it's the same report back either way and I'll see what else I can come up with.

Edit: Another page said that you need to disable the DHCP server in the modem, which is another fancy term for something routers do. Try looking for that setting if you can't find bridge or NAT anywhere.

Well it doesnt seem to matter weather I have the xbox connected directly to the modem or to the router. I get the same errors.

Basically, all I want to do is buy a couple of tracks for Rock Band 2. Can I just download the tracks to my computer then copy them to a flash drive and put the flash drive into my xbox and transfer them over?

I have removed my Netgear router with a regular Hub. I am still getting those errors. It has to be something in the modem itself. Like the Xbox customer support agent told me these modems don't have a version number in the firmware. It gets all that info from the satellite. It's a modem issue. Not necessarily an internal router in the modem issue.

I am going to hook back up my other router now. It has 8 ports, this hub only has 4.

Hmmm. The strangest thing... I am downloading updates on my xbox 360 but I cant connect to Xbox Live... Must be 2 different servers maybe.

No you cannot, I already said that earlier. :)

I don't know what I did, maybe it was the update but it seems to be working fine now... Actually, it is still having trouble connecting to some things still. Maybe Xbox Live related. Dunno.

but for sure try taking your box to somewhere with good 'net, like a library or a friend with cable or something, and see if that works.

Not read his last post? He said it's working now.

who are you? the "you missed his last post police?"

He's actually one of the most helpful people in the tech support forum, so I wouldn't talk **** if I were you.

Thanks for all of the help guys. I will use basil's advice though and take it over to a friends house this weekend. It's still a little flaky with the connection. Maybe all it needs is a good swift kick in the butt with a good connection to get all of the updates it needs to be fully functional on my connection. You're right about the X box Live tech support. They're the ones who told me that my modem was incompatible with their units but alas, I did get it to work intermittently. So, in case anyone else out there was having problems with Hughesnet, It will work. Just keep tweaking things and it will work eventually.

Once again, Thanks for all of the help!

You're building such a fantastic reputation for yourself here, buddy. Keep it up.

Try to refrain from personal attacks and being overly defensive in the future, gentlemen. That doesn't help anybody.

Since psy seems to have all the answers he needs, I'm closing this. Should he need any more assistance in the future, he's always welcome to make a new thread about it.
