So, you know, personally I would like to see more modern songs in Rockband (see this thread (http://www.rockband.com/vbforum/showthread.php?t=1491)) but I know that a lot of you like the old stuff and actually, I think it's a good idea to include songs from every age.
I tried to make a 40 tracks songlist, the offical announced songs are already included, and I added songs I think would be awesome, and I tried to find the best I could.
I guess Metal fans won't like it because there is no Metal, so, sorry.
1960s
* The Beatles - "Ticket to Ride"
* Rolling Stones - "Paint it Black" (I know it's in GH3, I just don't give a damn)
* Jimi Hendrix - "All Along The Watchtower"
* Pink Floyd - "Lucifer Sam"
1970s
* The Who - "Won't Get Fooled Again"
* Mountain - "Mississippi Queen"
* David Bowie - "Suffragette City"
* Black Sabbath - "Paranoid"
* Blue Oyster Cult - "Don't Fear the Reaper"
* The Ramones - "Rockaway Beach"
* Led Zeppelin - "Stairway to Heaven"
* Aerosmith - "Dream on"
* Boston - "Don't Look Back"
1980s
* Rush - "Tom Sawyer"
* Bon Jovi - "Wanted Dead or Alive"
* The Cure - "Just Like Heaven"
* Queen & David Bowie - "Under Pressure"
* U2 - "With or Without You"
* The Pixies - "Where is my Mind?"
* Journey - "Anyway you want it"
1990s
* Nirvana - "In Bloom"
* Stone Temple Pilots - "Vasoline"
* Weezer - "Say It Ain't So"
* Foo Fighters - "Learn to Fly"
* Metallica - "Enter Sandman"
* Radiohead - "Paranoid Android"
* Blur - "Song 2"
* Oasis - "Morning Glory"
* AC/DC - "Thunderstruck"
2000s
* The Hives - "Main Offender"
* The Strokes - "Reptilia"
* Angels & Airwaves - "The Adventure"
* Placebo - "This Picture"
* Queens of the Stone Age - "Go With the Flow"
* Papa Roach - "Last Resort"
* Alien Ant Farm - "Smooth Criminal"
* Wolfmother - "The Joker and the Thief"
* Flyleaf - "I'm so sick"
* Bloc Party - "The Pioneers"
So, what do you think? Enough variety? (except for the missing Metal songs - I just don't know any)
EDIT: Changed Gas Panic! to Morning Glory, since Gas Panic! was released in 2000.
EDIT2:
Thanks to WingsofSteel's suggestions, I decided to change some songs and bring even more variety in the list.
Removed:
Simon & Garfunkle - "Mrs. Robinson", The Turtles - "Happy Together", Mason Williams - "Classical Gas", Van Halen - "Jump", The White Stripes - "Icky Thump"
Added:
Boston - "Don't Look Back", Journey - "Anyway you want it", Aerosmith - "Dream On", Wolfmother - "Joker and the Thief", Pink Floyd - "Lucifer Sam"
EDIT3:

that is a great list...you did exceptionally well in the 60s choosing a great beatles song and stones song..who basically shaped the 60s

Thanks, thanks! Yeah, I actually listened to a lot of Beatles songs before making this list and I thought Ticket to Ride would work the best.
Hope to see more comments. :)

I hate to say this but the list isn't very creative. I like about 50%, but they are a little too 'standard' for me. I'd much rather have some of the more hardcore songs from some of these bands. But, it's not too shabby. :)

I stopped at Stairway to Heaven.
Seriously, there are so many Zeppelin songs that would be far superior to it. It's a great song, but it would be terrible for this game.

I'd rather Helter Skelter than Ticket to Ride.
I know that there are better Zep songs but I can't think of any by name off the top of my head(aside from Good Times, Bad Times, but that's from '69).
I think some Pink Floyd would be cool, but I can't see where it would fit. Maybe What Do You Want from Me? from The Division Bell.
EDIT: Cream would be cool too.

Cream is definitely a good idea... and a much betetr Zeppellin song would be Black Dog, for sure...
I also think we could use some Floyd in there... Maybe some Queen, too

Well, I can't make everyone happy.
I mean, I tried to find songs from the 60s and 70s that I like, and I found them, but actually I'm not the biggest fan of those times, so I could live with different songs there.
But I really love the list from 80s to 2000. I love the Cure, Oasis, and everything in the 2000 list.
Well, Harmonix can't make everyone happy too. I really hope that some of the bands I mentioned are in the game. First and foremost PLACEBO (!!), Angels & Airwaves and Oasis.
Of course that one Papa Roach song would be awesome too.
Actually I can't really decide if I'd have to pick just a few songs for the real final list, because all the songs I picked especially those from 2000 are awesome IMO.
Hmm... If just one of those modern songs would be in the real list :) :) :) ...or two, or three... :p
Cream is definitely a good idea... and a much betetr Zeppellin song would be Black Dog, for sure...

I just love Stairway to Heaven. Yeah, Black Dog may be cool too, but I would miss StH.
Oh, and Queen is in my list.

Hmmm, I liked the 60s and 70s stuff, but from then on I wasn't really with ya. Might just be because I didn't know a lot of the stuff from then on, but...that's how I felt anyway.
Oh, and list needs more Tool.

i have to agree on that one. well i would still buy it. but i think this game will have better, more well known stuff that some of the bands you mentioned. the 60's and 70's were pretty good but everything else not so much. I don't think many of your choices go much in the way of guitar solos, good drumlines etc.

Add more stuff to the 60s, 70s, and 80s. You have more songs in the 90s and 00s sections.
Also, This is just out of personal preference, but you should add Big Country to the 80s section.

I'd so go with Good times, Bad times for any led zep song they could include.. It's one of my favorite zeppelin songs, and it's just got killer parts for every instrument. Double kick, wicked bassline.. vocals are fun... that'd be a wicked selection.
DLC IT! DLC IT! :D

Some of you should really listen to the 2000s songs I listed. Bloc Party's The Pioneers has awesome drumming, Flyleaf is nice to sing and a catchy song. I love the style of Angels & Airwaves, it's so different then anything else. It's dreamy, spacy and it still rocks.
Placebo is just one of my favourite bands ever. They have to be in it.

You mean it was in Die Hard 4.0? I haven't seen Transformers yet (it's not in cinemas yet), but the song was in Die Hard 4.

There's a lot of good songs, unfortunately, most of them are terrible for the game (Seriously, Mrs. Robinson? Happy Together? Those are the most challenging songs you can get from the 60s?)
The 70s and 80s were the era of the classic guitar gods, but they're under-represented, and in many cases, songs that are absolutely horrible for the game are chosen (StH, Jump) In fact, he only chooses one new song for the 70s, even though that was the era of Floyd, Zeppelin, Boston, Kansas, etc. And he chooses the least original song possible that is not even a good fit for the game.
And his choices for the 2000s are mostly horrible and unrepresentative of the better stuff. He has a few good choices from the 90s, but that doesn't change how unimaginative and poorly thought-out his list is as a whole.

Well, that is your opinion. Actually music is always a matter of taste. Everyone likes different music. I would probably think that your list is horrible.
You may be right with the 60s and 70s stuff though. As I said, I'm not the greatest fan of music of the area. (I'm okay with removing Happy Together and Mrs. Robinson) Some of the stuff I picked for the 80s may be not that good either, I can easily live with removing "Jump", but I want The Cure in it. U2 is somehow important too.
And yeah, I've only added Led Zeppelin to the 70s because there were already a lot of songs from that time in the official list. I don't know why so many people don't want Stairway, I still love the song.
I think your oppinion on my 2000 stuff is just wrong. But that's still a matter of taste. I may not be the music pro in terms of music from the 60s and 70s, but I'm really into music today and Bloc Party for example is a great band. AvA is also a band I love, and the other ones are just songs that are really fun to play and listen to.
Anyway, I just think it's not possible to say that someones choices are bad, because everyone feels different about music somehow.

True. And that's why Harmonix' final list won't make everyone happy too.
But I'm sure they will add stuff for everyone. And don't forget about DLC! ;)

Well, that is your opinion. Actually music is always a matter of taste. Everyone likes different music. I would probably think that your list is horrible.
I actually like most of your music, you just don't have a very good sense of what would fit well with Rock Band. Case in Point: Stairway to Heaven, while one of my favorite songs, has very little bass and drums. The guitar is also very repetitive for the first six minutes and is nowhere nearly as challenging as many other Zep songs. And to be honest, it doesn't look like you put effort into determining how good the song would be for the game, because there are a lot of odd choices that just don't fit half the instruments.
You may be right with the 60s and 70s stuff though. As I said, I'm not the greatest fan of music of the area. Yeah, that may be true. I was blindfolded by the awesomeness of the song. I just wanna play and sing it. I mean, IMO I think it would work. The only instrument that may get boring in this song is the bass. And yeah, the drums kick in very late in the song, but it's nice too.

1960s
* The Beatles - "Ticket to Ride"
Not the greatest song you could have chosen, although listening to it again, it's a better fit than I'd remembered. There are a few songs I can list off the top of my head that have very good balance. If you prefer early Beatles, Rain (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FTLJMSbEnn0) has sweet drums, awesome vocals, and some good guitar parts. Mid-Beatles: And Your Bird Can Sing (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ilx0KvBnZlY) has a sweet dual-guitar harmony, fun vocals, and decent drums. Latter Beatles: Revolution (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gf-Q2rDd6Tw) and Helter Skelter (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OP0u9HUo1-Q) are great fast-paced, high-energy tracks. If you don't mind getting into lesser known territory, Everybody's Got Something to Hide Except for Me and My Monkey (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I1IoQJ_PVoM) has awesome drums, awesome guitar, and decent vocals.
* Rolling Stones - "Paint it Black" (I know it's in GH3, I just don't give a damn)
As a Stones fan, I'd prefer a new song. It's Only Rock and Roll (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r-BxLbMT2s4) would probably be my first choice, and it's a total rock anthem. Great vocals, nice guitar, and good drums.
* Simon & Garfunkel - "Mrs. Robinson"
No denying that vocals for a Simon and Garfunkel song would be amazing, but the other three instruments would just be dull. Maybe.... Just maybe... The Sound of Silence would work, but overall I think I'd prefer it if you just gave an extra slot to a 70s/80s song
* The Turtles - "Happy Together"
OK, listening again, it's a bit better than I thought it would be, but it's still instrumentally lackluster, even for Tier 1. There's more horn and piano than guitar, I think. Let the 70s/80s have another song, they deserve it
* Iron Butterfly - "In A Gadda Da Vida"
Never actually heard this song, so I youtubed it. Epic.
* Jimi Hendrix - "All Along The Watchtower"
Good song, but you must consider balance a bit more. Fire (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QJ6B8bKKTS4) has guitar that's just as amazing, but it also has really good drums. Watchtower has decent drums, so it's no big deal if you'd rather stick with it, but Fire's better.
* Mason Williams - "Classical Gas" (Ok, there's no singer in this, but, oh well)
And that means it ain't a good choice for the game. Try Lucifer Sam (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iwOF5tK34Q0) - Pink Floyd (1967)
1970s
* The Who - "Won't Get Fooled Again"
* Mountain - "Mississippi Queen"
* David Bowie - "Suffragette City"
* Black Sabbath - "Paranoid"
* Blue Oyster Cult - "Don't Fear the Reaper"
* The Ramones - "Rockaway Beach"
* Led Zeppelin - "Stairway to Heaven"
Very little drums, very little bass, repetitive guitar for six minutes, good vocals. You're batting 1 for 4 here. Replace it with a more balanced track like Communication Breakdown (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FiL1sjGIcew) (1969), Good Times Bad Times (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UskcGA1rUUs) (1969), Ramble On (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zoBvVXluE0M) (1969), or if you'd prefer to keep it in the 70s: Rock & Roll (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xpfo8Oj0Szo) (1971), The Ocean (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XCHEqIRwLVE) (1973), The Song Remains the Same (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ztfd7eddBbQ) (1973), Houses of the Holy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MwYc0BJcB4c) (1975), or Achilles Last Stand (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ArWLI908i4) (1976)
Disclaimer: Love the hell out of Stairway, but the instruments would not be very fun to play.
ADD THESE BANDS
Boston: Rock 'n Roll Band (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_gQjWkxJSY8) (1976), Something About You (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G5c7qOVLRQU) (1976), Don't Be Afraid (1978), Don't Look Back (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GlALY30a0Og) (1978), Party (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2GliHPLNODs) (1978), or Feelin' Satisfied (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O-4ShKJYTLU&mode=related&search=) (1978)
Kansas: Child of Innocence (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I44xJLn20hA) (1975), Icarus (Borne on the Wings of Steel) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rBRj7AF8YjQ) (1975), The Wall (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lur4eGdkuTE) (1976), On the Other Side (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bSVULtkJqDQ) (1979), or People of the South Wind (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ihl77dHSo2E) (1979)
1980s
* Rush - "Tom Sawyer"
* Bon Jovi - "Wanted Dead or Alive"
* The Cure - "Just Like Heaven"
* Queen & David Bowie - "Under Pressure"
Unimpressive guitar; catchy but repetitive bass; and we already have a Bowie song, let's have Queen get their own, eh? Crazy Little Thing Called Love (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MrelPOP518g) (1980) or I Want it All (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gfLD-7bCtME) (1989). Er... the 80s weren't Queen's most prolific years. If you move 'em to the 90s, you can use Innuendo (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cpys1c3jCNs), which is a good thing.
* U2 - "With or Without You"
* The Pixies - "Where is my Mind?"
* Guns N' Roses - "Knockin on Heaven's Door" This was on Use Your Illusion, so it's technically 90s. If you want 80s GNR, you can't go wrong with Nightrain (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VtyqIRMJLCs).
* Van Halen - "Jump" (Yes I expect you do play those effects with a guitar, you can do it with "Less talk more rock", so why not?)
Van Halen has plenty of songs where you don't need to change the song to fit the game, why choose the one that does? Um... all the VH songs I know are late 70s, but Jamie's Cryin' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZzMxijVhM2o&mode=related&search=), Runnin' With the Devil (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tpX3NhpRGdE), and Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pV1msp3N8Eg) would all be great
ADD THESE BANDS
Journey: Separate Ways (Worlds Apart) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sxxOyGK1pMk) (1983), Dead or Alive (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P4uTZn2diQc) (1981), Lay It Down (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qpQdG3GLhTw) (1981), Escape (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wzxTwXgZeBA) (1981), Stone In Love (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z_pZFciPrI8) (1981), The Party's Over (Hopelessly In Love) (1981), or Any Way You Want It (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LFjKFDvyJ80) (1980)
Dio: Rainbow in the Dark (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DJ_FgL5l1og) (1983)
Iron Maiden: Seventh Son of a Seventh Son (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rS7ptTYNlGE) (1988), Aces High (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IvsFx4lSVUI) (1984), Flight of Icarus (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RoqLEdk0tkc) (1983), or Where Eagles Dare (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J0R7eDAKayo) (1983)
1990s
* Nirvana - "In Bloom"
* Stone Temple Pilots - "Vasoline"
* Weezer - "Say It Ain't So"
* Foo Fighters - "Learn to Fly"
* Metallica - "Enter Sandman"
* Radiohead - "Paranoid Android"
Good choice
* Blur - "Song 2"
* Oasis - "Morning Glory"
OK choice. I think Some Might Say (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g4gYVS76zp4) and Slide Away (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0vhAj-bI4EY) are better suited to the game, but Morning Glory isn't bad.
2000s
* The Hives - "Main Offender"
* The Strokes - "Reptilia"
* Angels & Airwaves - "The Adventure"
* Placebo - "This Picture"
* Queens of the Stone Age - "Go With the Flow"
* Papa Roach - "Last Resort"
* Alien Ant Farm - "Smooth Criminal"
* The White Stripes - "Icky Thump"
* Flyleaf - "I'm so sick"
* Bloc Party - "The Pioneers"
No Wolfmother for the 2000s? I'm disappointed. Where Eagles Have Been (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IXfHkoCzQS4), Pleased to Meet You (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KJschJJxdHw), or Tales (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yzjsvI3rZc8)
So, what do you think? Enough variety? (except for the missing Metal songs - I just don't know any)No, not enough variety. Keep in mind that we've only had 7 years of the 2000s, so you have it pretty disproportionately represented.
Wow, that took a loooong time.

Stairway to Heaven would be more appropriate for GH3, but if they're taking it into Rock Band, they would first off have to get the master track. The drums and bass aren't that interesting, but then again, I think that them developers would rely on the feeling you get while playing STH. That said, let's move on. Why no Dream Theater? Like their "hits" "Pull Me Under" or "Metropolis pt.1". Or why not "Constant Motion" off Systematic Chaos. Has to be master track though, since NO ONE can cover the voice of James LaBrie (nor Mike Portnoy's drumming or Petrucci's guitar blistering :)). But there would be a technical problem if they did. I assume they can map Portnoy's madness, but to play in the game would be a problem since, as far as I know, there is only ONE pedal to "kick" the bass. And I quote "It would be like downstrumming on Misirlou". I agree. Do you?

So, I just got back home and I will check some of your songs out and I guess there will be some changes in my list thanks to you WOS!
But I really can't say if I will remove Stairway. I just listened to it again and it's so amazing. Sure, some Instruments may not be to challenging, but there were songs in GH2 with a boring bassline too. Besides, I think it's the overall feeling you get when playing this song as a band! That's why I don'T want to miss it.
And I love my 2000s songs. There are all awesome. And it's absolutly not like as if they came out all in the same year. They're not even all the same genre. And actually, I don'T know the Wolfmother songs you listed, but I will take a listen.
Anyway, could take some hours though, have no time at the moment.

So, finally I was able to listen to those songs.
And yeah, I will make some changes. But not everything was my taste.
The Beatles songs you listed, well, Revolution and Everybody got something... would be really good choices, but I still think that Ticket to Ride is the best out of those songs. So I would prefer that song.
I'm sorry, but the Rolling Stones song felt kinda boring while listening to it. It don't say that it's bad, but I still think that Paint it Black is probably the best Stones song ever.
You're somehow right about S&G and The Turtles. I removed them.
Jimmy Hendrix' Fire is a great song, you're right. But I think it's kinda on the same level as Watchtower. But Watchtower is considered as one of the best rock songs of all time. So I'm gonna stick with it.
I listened to the Peal Jam song. It's not an awesome song I'm dying for to play, but it's still a good song, so I decided to remove Classical Gas for it.
So, there we are at the Led Zeppelin problem. I tried, but I just CAN't remove Stairway. Stairway is not only considered to be one of the best, but to be probably the best rock song of all time. And as I said, I think it's the overall feeling you get playing this song with "your band". I'm sure you will be able to download the IV album of Led Zeppelin anyway, but I listened to all the Zeppelin songs you listed and Stairway is just the best song ever. (by Led Zeppelin :P ) So, sorry.
Boston and Kansas are those kind of bands I don't like. It's just, that I don't like that classical rock a lot. But I still want a list that everyone may like, so I decided to add one song by Boston, "Don't Look Back".
I've listened to the Queen songs you listed. But Under Pressure is, for me, the best song ever written by Queen. No song can match it. I think even in the song itself there is a lot of variety. And just listen to it LIVE (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d-xVb1qsPCw), you can't tell me that it's fun to sing and to play!
So, no, I would hate myself if I would remove this song for a different Queen song, or every other song out there. :p
Recently, I took my Xbox and visit my mother's house. When I played it, she asked if the songlist includes "Knocking on Heavens door". Hehe, I think I stick with this song and move it to the 90s.
Journey, of course, what a nice song they have! I removed Van Halen for "Anyway you want it"!!
Unfortunetly I can't add any of the other bands you listed because I just don't have the space left.
And yeah, Radiohead's Paranoid Android is awesome! That song has to be in the game!! And Oasis, yeah, I think I know almost every Oasis song ever written, and especially Slide Away would be awesome too. But I think Morning Glory is equal to those songs and there is no reason to remove it.
So, now the 2000s songs. I love the modern songs I've chosen. So I don't want to chance any of those. Wolfmother was already in Guitar Hero 2, but okay, I will do you this one favour. :p
But I've chosen The Joker and the Thief, because that's my favourite song by Wolfmother.
Oh, and besides that, I wanted to add a band I almost forgot about and I think it brings more classical rock into the game, but GOOD classical rock. Aerosmith - Dream On!!!

As much as StH is a classic song, it's not a real balanced song as far as parts, replace it with Good Times Bad Times or Immigrant Song.
Oh and where the hell is AC/DC in there, they were huge in the '80s. Back in Black, Hells Bells, You Shook Me All Night Long, For Those About to Rock, all shoe ins. Yes they are pretty overused AC/DC songs but they are totally fitting for Rock Band. Oh and why would they use their one Van Halen song as Jump? Never struck me as a rock song imo. Panama would be way better.
Yes I know I said AC/DC should be in the '80s, but I think AC/DC should get two because Thunderstruck is such a rockin song with a kickin guitar and drums, so that should be in the '90s list.
Definately need Wolfmother in the 2000s, but it needs to be Joker and the Thief or Colossal. Too bad Woman wasn't saved for this game, I would love singing vocals for it.
Other than that, its a good setlist.

Take a look at my revised list. Joker and the Thief is in the list. ;) I know, you're right, Thunderstruck should be in it too. But I don't have any space left. And I would only remove Boston for it. But I'm not sure what you guys would think of that. (@WingsofSteel? :p )

Don't take Boston out. {angry face}
I personally think Dude (Looks Like A Lady) would be the best possible Aerosmith choice, but it's no big deal if you'd rather keep Dream On.

Them be fightin words.
Oh and looking at your revised list, some more suggestions, lol.
It needs some Crue and Van Halen. Eithier Dr. Feelgood or Wild Side for Crue and Panama for sure Van Halen.
Why are you leaving Stairway in there?
Nice pick on Journey, AWYWI is awesome.

Yeah, Dude is cool too. But I like Dream On a little bit better.
Anyway, I hope you're a little bit happier with my list now. And it's not the real list anway. :p (Whhyyy? lol )
I still hope that Harmonix will take a look at the list and may decide to add some of those bands in the game, especially from 2000. (Placebo!!!) And hopefully the Cure! :D

Decided to remove Iron Butterfly, because In A Gadda Da Vida is just too long. :p
Added Ac/Dc's Thunderstruck instead!! That song just had to be in the list!
I know that makes 60s songs a minimum, but, come on, it's Thunderstruck!
