Just change the station whenever I'm watching sports and some guy says "This is a guy who..." "This is a team that...". It just makes that person sound rediculously stupid.

No way, John Madden is the patron saint of awesome gibberish

I actually don't like it when people say that. It just seems douchebaggy.

I tend to notice this almost exclusively when I'm hearing analysts talk about the NFL or college football.

"Here's a guy who who who when he puts his contacts in, he can see better"

"Here's a guy, that when runs he goes a lot faster"

"60% of the time that play will always work"

"When your arm gets hit, the ball is not going to go where you want it to"

God bless you, John Madden

Well, those are Frank Caliendo-doing-Madden (http://www.maddenguy.com/) quotes, but they might as well be Madden quotes. :)

Sports are cool. Sport commentators are infuriating.

so true.
i mean, if i wanted to watch three guys talk about everything we already knew, then i would have changed the channel until it was halftime.

The great sport commentators can add quite a bit to the game, whether it be pure entertainment or general sports knowledge and insight.

For instance, I'm a White Sox fan, but I'd watch Cubs games just to hear Harry Caray drunkenly call the game. I always loved watching Sunday and Monday night football to hear Madden, and I only wish we could throw Yogi Berra into a room and have him sportscast everything.

The problem we have nowadays is the influx of former players who don't belong behind a microphone. Just because you played the sport at its highest level does not mean you should be announcing the game, and the same goes for owning/managing a team (I'm looking at you, MJ). But with the internet world being 24/7 news, stations are trying to one up each other to get the ratings. So you have a favorite and notable player retire, then become a presence on sports station. Sometimes it works out (I love Barkley), a lot of times they don't (Walton needs to burn in a flaming fiery inferno of fire).

Obviously this is all personal opinion, but commentators can most definitely make a game and a play more exciting. Outside of Yogi, I'd love to have Gus Johnson call all of my teams' important games. Not all commentators are money pits.

Side note: Some one needs to tell Sportscenter that we don't watch the highlights to listen to some dude dryly regurgitate quips in an effort to make us chortle. While funny and clever when it first came out, we get it now, Aloha means goodbye when the dude is cooler than the other side of the pillow saying hello to his little friend.

Gus Johnson is the man. Most announcers are not great, but he is absolutely electric.

I loathed John Madden and am glad he's retired.

But now that Brett Favre is coming out of retirement, doesn't that mean Madden has to also? ;)

No. There are plenty of unretired announcers who are capable of verbally fellating ol' #4 on a regular basis.
