View Full Version : Play the Beatles "Whoops, Wrong Genre" game!

Here's how you play -- Pick the most interesting Beatles song to rewrite into each of the below musical styles. Pick "interesting" over "good," since the whole idea would just be wrong to actually do. :D
Punk Rock
I'll go for "You Can't Do That." Speed it up about 2x, overstrum a few power chords, and go for the "razor-blade-lodged-in-throat" sound.
Country Western
I don't think you could do much better than "Everybody's Got Something to Hide..." for shear hilarity, but that's assuming it could actually be done. If not, my second choice would be "Norwegian Wood." And yes, it would be godawful.
Rap
Maybe "I am the Walrus" is too easy here, but it's what came to mind. "Yellow Submarine" might generate a few chuckles, though.
Gospel
I somehow envision a robed group in church singing "She Came in Through the Bathroom Window." Is that just wrong?
Doo-Wop
"Your Mother Should Know" - Admit it, you can totally hear this in your head.
Your turn.

I'd love to hear a heavy metal version of "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da".

Ska
"I've just Seen a Face"
Reggae
"Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da"
Not bad, but how about:
Ska = "In My Life" (2x tempo)
Reggae = "Revolution"

I don't think there's "wrong" genre to cover the beatles, but I had actually heard:
"With a little help from my friends" played by Los Fabulosos Cadillacs/Celia Cruz ska version.
"Yesterday" on Latin rythms, so

Ska
"I've just Seen a Face"
Reggae
"Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da"
Those would actually sound pretty good. I can imagine someone like the Bosstones doing a cover of "I've Just Seen A Face", actually.

Country: "Run For Your Life".
Oh, wait... that already is a Country song. :)
I think "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" would make an interesting Metal song.
Try "Dear Prudence" as a Punk song (hey, that actually made "Kids in America" better on RB2!)
Let's imagine "I Want You (She's So Heavy)" as a Gospel song! Or, for a totally crazy suggestion, "Helter Skelter" done by the London Boy's Choir.
"Taxman" would actually be a good fit as a Ska song, too, in my opinion.
"Getting Better" could probably work with a Rap arrangement.

Reggae-Dr.Robert might be cool.
I'm not sure "complete and utter wrongness" counts as a genre, but after hearing Shatner's cover of "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds", I started imagining him doing "I Am the Walrus", which works remarkably well.
(For some values of "works".)

I've always thought Let It Be would work best to be a Gospel song, but that's just probably just because of the piano and organ in the song.

this is blasphemy to the beatles music catalog! leave them the way they're supposed to be in their respected popish-rockish, rock, hard rock, and metal (helter skelter was their only metal song i think...) categories!

I'd love to hear some really discordant version of While My Guitar Gently Weeps. You know, let somebody like Link Wray or Neil Young take it.
Another thing I think could be interesting is seeing a New Wave outfit tackle I Am The Walrus. I think Costello & the Attractions could do a good job of it.
Last thing is I'd love to see a jam band go absolutely freaking crazy on the Abbey Road medley, particularly She Came in Through the Bathroom Window and The End.
