View Full Version : Lag at 480p?

I got to thinking about this yesterday... I've played both GH2 and GH80's on my HDTV with progressive scan (at 480p), I never had to calibrate lag, and never had an issue. So I thought maybe if I set the PS3 to only display out at 480p, and set the lag to 0, I should be good, right? Well I tried last night with both HDMI and component and still had lag issues. I'm using the same TV and component cable (and the audio is going through the respective cables), so the only variables in the equation are the PS3, the controller, and the game. Along the same lines, I've felt like the lag while playing Rock Band has varied slightly during gameplay. For example, I've felt like I needed to play before the beat sometimes, and after the beat other times in order to get it to register. Has anyone else experienced this? This also could just be my interpretation of missing notes due to occasional double strums (I need to send my guitar back, but I'm waiting for the release of the funds on my recently returned kick which snapped in two :()
Anyone have any thoughts or ideas?

I played GH1, GH2, and GH80s on my PS2 through the exact same setup I use for my 360 now with GH3 and RB. I have had to calibrate lag on every one of those games on both platforms. None of them were spot on with calibration set to 0ms, because the lag is due to my TV/receiver, not the game/console.

Edit: For information's sake, it's a 65" Samsung DLP 1080p, with audio going through optical cable to my Sony 7.1 receiver. Both the PS2 and 360 using component video cables to connect to the TV.

Having to calibrate lag on ALL of the games makes sense. Not having to calibrate lag on GH1, 2, or 80's, while having to calibrate it on GH3 and RB however, doesn't make sense. Especially using the same cable and TV. And the lag seeming to wander doesn't seem to make sense to me either. Note that I have a PS3, not a 360. I am starting to wonder whether the PS3 is introducing the lag. I have the PS3 sitting out in the open, up off the floor with plently space to breathe, and it usually doesn't get very hot (I guess I should double check that while playing RB though).

I supposed I also should have mentioned that the lag calibration setting for each game has been different. Not just for each console, but for each game.
