It's really not that bad, as long as you like milkshakes and ice cream. (and you should!)

i'll just go ahead and be honest... when you get a little older very few things suck more than constant tooth pains.

If you get them pulled, I definitely recommend being put to sleep with anesthesia or w/e it is they give you during the operation~
The first couple hours after getting the teeth pulled were the hardest (I didn't have the painkillers yet and the effects of the drugs were wearing off)
After that though I don't remember it being so bad... just have to eat lots of applesauce, pudding, ice cream/milkshakes for a day or two....
~and that's really not that bad :p

Uh... I wasn't even here then... That was around the time my PS3 YLOD'd and I was offline for about 3 months.
And uh... No to the anesthesia... I only do that when I need surgery, other than that I feel it's unnecessary and too risky.

Ive yet to have my wisdom teeth removed, but ive had some teeth removed, and the nitrous oxide was nice. Although, my mom had hers removed, and she was barely awake for hours after the operation. She slept all day, slow the next, and back to normal soon thereafter.

After they cut them out of your gums, they'll be scraping your skull later with sharp metal scrapey utensils. Then they'll sew it up. And if you're unlucky enough, they'll open up and become painful hollowed out cavities where all kinds of icky food and germs can host their orgies of pain and decay in your jaw bone.
Just kidding.

.... good luck :o
I had to go twice, once for each side~ the second time my surgeon started on me before the anesthesia fully kicked in... boy oh boy, the pressure I felt on my tooth was SO intense. My back tooth was aching real bad for the next few days (more than when I got them pulled the first time) and it was also really sensitive for like a week. I can't imagine what it would be like without the anesthesia or any kind of drug...

I got mine removed sometime last month. Everyone was telling me horror stories as well, but I came out just fine. They took out all four, two of which were horizontally impacted. I was put to sleep, I didn't feel a thing and don't remember any of it.
I had no complications what so ever, but then again, everyone heals differently. Just make sure to follow their directions properly and I'm sure you will be fine.
Bruising and swelling is normal, have fun looking like Mr. Puffycheeks McPuff for a few days!

Getting your wisdom teeth out IS surgery.
You will seriously regret it if you don't go under.

I was awake the whole time I had all four cut and yanked out in 2 sessions. I was using a ghetto dentist that let me pay whenever because I didn't have dental insurance. He used like.. a bunch of novacaine or whatever you call that pink goop they qtip into your gums and cheek. He would wait a while and occasionally ask me if I felt this or this.. It was all pretty painless.
All I got was ibuprofen and a mini icepack after. :\
Going under is a scary thing in general, I think. Shouldn't you be like a specialist to administer anesthesia? What if you just stop breathing or whatever... get molested. It can't be THAT bad unless you're absolutely terrified of the dentist.

The stuff they gave me made me fall asleep every time I took it. It got really annoying after the first 4 times.
The job my braces did on my lower teeth? Ruined. If I ever want straight teeth after getting the wisdom teeth out, I'm gonna have to go back on braces.
It's not terrible, though. I'm not in any pain or anything. Asides from my lower teeth being crooked and having to brush a little more diligently at the back of my molars, it's not like the ninth layer of hell or anything.

Eh, I just had local when I had it done, and I didn't really feel anything. It was sorta amusing watching the dentist yank my teeth out though.
Of course, I also threw up after I had my wisdom teeth out, and I couldn't take painkillers without feeling sick (although I didn't really need them after the first day or two). But I have a pretty weak stomach, so you'll probably be fine.

The needles have improved in recent years. They found a new technique for making the tips even smaller so you'll barely feel them.

In other news, a representative for Harmonix Music Systems released a statement today encouraging the use of narcotics. Family rights groups were quick to denounce the makers of Rock Band, saying that the company "had been attempting to rot the brains of our precious snowflakes with it's video games and rock music for years. Now they've found a new weapon in the war for our child's minds."
Requests for a response and for comment on the rumor that narcotics would be included in the forthcoming "Pink Floyd: Rock Band" were not returned.

I got them pulled as well. One was rather big, so my dentist had to use some force... I really thought this guy was going to break my jaw, but it was an interesting feeling to see my wisdom teeth flying through the room...
And no, I'm not kidding.

You'll be fine hoss. I had 3 of mine taken out when I was in the Navy. 2 of which were when I was in Boot. The bottoms are the worst to have removed, but just follow the directions like others have said and you'll be fine.
No drinking thru a straw, no smoking, and you gotta irrigate with a cool little toy they give. They didn't put me too sleep just novocaine. The worst part was the pressure felt like my head was going to collapse in on its self. Oh and when they crack one of them and a piece landed on the back of my mouth and I swallowed it....

Haha, it'll take more than a tooth to take me down!
I had to have one of my molars removed in the middle of August. I got local anesthesia since it took him all of 30 seconds to remove my tooth, and going under would have been completely pointless and a waste of hundreds of dollars. An abscess formed in one of the root sockets about a month later because it didn't heal properly, and I had to go have it cut open, scraped out, and shot full of penicillin.
My oral surgeon said it was just a fluke though, so you shouldn't be too concerned about that happening to you. Your mind makes it out to be a lot worse than it actually is. The worst part is waiting for them to start.

I just got mine out. I had a crackpot dentist when I was younger who said they were fine to stay in. WRONG. Caused all sorts of silly problems as an adult - and then insurance wouldn't cover having them out.
I am a dentophobe and it seriously wasn't that bad. I got put out and woke up with my boyfriend holding my hand and talking to the nurse about aftercare. The healing has been kind of rough but not overwhelmingly bad. I went for a checkup yesterday and the doc told me if I'd gotten these out 15 years ago when I should have the healing would have been easy-peasy.
Go ahead and do it - will save you loads of hassle and extra pain years down the road. Plus, it's a lot more simple and painless than you'd think - getting all four of mine surgically removed only took a half hour - and with being put under i don't remember a second of it (thank god). Plus I got to sit on my butt, eat ice cream, and be spoiled all weekend long ;).

Get them taken care of ASAP. I had to wait a year for my dental insurance to kick in. While i waited my 2 impacted wisdom teeth grew and and destroyed the molars next to them. I was in constant pain for months straigt.
I had 6 teeth removed at one time. 4 wisdom and 2 destroyed molars. I wish I could have afforded to get them taken out eariler. Then I would have those 2 missing teeth.

I had all four of mine removed nearly 14 years ago. It's oral surgery, so they gave me an IV, I zonked out, woke up and it was all done (no scary pulling or bizzare dentist memories). I didn't have much pain or trouble at all. Nothing a bit of ibuprofen couldn't handle.
You might get to looking like a 'chipmunk' for a day or two but it goes away.
I think experiences might vary, but mine was as good as it could be. A week after I had it done I had to start 'band camp' in highschool. The stiches had just started disolving by then so it was amusing.
I'm a the biggest baby in the world when it comes to having cavities filled.... I'm very tolerant to novacaine so it takes a ton to make me numb, and needles and me are not friends. When done my gums feel pincushioned for a few days. That is when I know what the phrase 'hitting a nerve' truly means.

here's my story, in text i made when i was bored the first day:
The day was July 30th 2009 - extraction day. I walked into the dentist's office to sign in and my mom quickly found out that instead of our insurance covering 80% of the surgery, it would only cover about 50%. My mom was pretty pissed, and had to charge about $860 to her credit card. Then we sat in the waiting room, for about five to ten minutes... I forget, I was just really anxious. Then a woman came out with a "goody bag" as she called it, and handed it to my mom while explaining what was inside. After that, I was taken back, and laid in a chair. The same woman asked if I wanted laughing gas. I reluctantly said yes, and didn't mind it for a little while, until I started feeling a little awkward, at which point I took it off... I just didn't like the feeling. A few minutes later, the surgeon came in with the anesthesiologist. I got monitors put on my chest and index finger, and I started to feel a little more anxious. At that point, the surgeon asked me how I felt, and I replied, "I'm just a little anxious." he exclaimed that was completely normal, and he continued to work on the IV. He put the needle in my arm, which was barely a pinch, taped the needle down, and turned on the juice. I asked him, "Will I fall asleep in a few seconds?" and he said, "It will probably be more like a minute." I really don't remember a single thing after that. It was like they say everywhere - in what seemed like a blink, I woke up to a nurse putting lip balm on my lips saying they were chapped... then I remember a few other sketchy scenes. For instance, me attempting to stand up and nearly collapsing. I was given a wheelchair, and wheeled out to my car. From then on, I regained full conciousness.
On the way home, my mom stopped at CVS and picked up chocolate milk, vanilla ice cream, and root beer float ice cream, as well as put in my prescriptions, which included Amoxocillin (the antibiotic I used as a precaution to a possible infection) Vicodin, (a painkiller, of course) and Ibuprofen. (Which is mainly an anti-inflammatory, but it has some painkiller stuff in it. It's basic name is Motrin.) When I got home, my chin, bottom lip, and ears were all completely numb. It was difficult, but I managed to have ice cream and take my meds.
Currently, I'm laying in bed at 1:36 A.M. on day one. I feel alright, but my bottom right extraction area is not feeling too good. While the other three seem to be doing great, this one is having issues. First, when I look at it, it seems to be the only one that has a little hole - gasp - like a dry socket. It also continuously keeps bleeding, even if I use gauze... it doesn't seem to want to clot. I'll see what happens tomorrow, and if the blood doesn't clot and I keep bleeding, I'll likely have to go back to the dentist/surgeon... I don't know what they'll have to do - maybe stitch it or give me clove oil gauze - but I'm not expecting anything too bad. I think I've been through the worst part, and it really wasn't even all that bad. I was really anxious about the whole fact that I'd be asleep during the procedure, paranoid about not knowing what would happen, if I'd wake up, if I'd have an allergic reaction, all that nonsense. Well, everything went fine... so far.
A couple hours ago my surgeon called me on the phone, Dr. Schneider, and asked how I was doing. I said I was fine, (which I am, not really lying.) and he just said that while today may have been painful, tomorrow will be worse, and I'd only get better from then on. While this is true, that's only true if you DON'T have a dry socket... which I think I may... but it's too early to tell.
