View Full Version : Beatles Limited Edition Will Sell Out by November, says Viacom CEO

Anyone waiting to buy his boomer parents a showpiece gift for Christmas, listen up: The CEO of Viacom, parent company of MTV Games (http://kotaku.com/tag/mtv-games/), says that the limited edition hardware bundle of Beatles: Rock Band should sell out by November. That's the $249 version, with Ringo Starr's drums and Paul McCartney's bass (plus microphone and stand). GamesIndustry.biz reports that Phillipe Dauman, the Viacom boss, told a conference yesterday that sales have exceeded internal expectations, to the tune of 25 percent of its inventory being sold in the first week.
"The special limited edition hardware sets that we have are selling really fast," Dauman told the Goldman Sachs Communacopia XVIII Conference in New York, "and it looks to us that we'll be selling out of that in November."
Dauman added that the game's sales have been, in particular, helped by the price cut on the PlayStation 3.
Should Dauman be right, it will be interesting to see if a bona fide holiday gray market can develop for the Beatles' top-shelf bundle, considering the expectations of a poor holiday spending season overall, and the fact it's not a console, just a very expensive version of a single game.

I can attest to the actual limited-ness of the Beatles Limited Edition Bundle.

Might not want to wait too long to snag yours.

I'm so glad tha we snagged ours on the first day! I wasn't intending to buy the LE... I just wanted the Bass Hofner...but then found out that....that was the only way to get it..so we did. Now hubby been trying the drums too! And I love the Hofner! :)

Yes...we have a Wii and I already noticed here that some stores don't have any more of them...(here on the west coast)

I got me a discounted Gretsch, and that might be as far as I go. Sad, but I could read the writing on the wall, which is why I leapt to get it before I was planning to. I was hoping for lots of game sales and languishing sales of the bundles. Bittersweet moment to be wrong.

Also, the standalone Gretsch/Rickenbacker are even more limited than the Bundle, so I'd say get those as early as possible if you want to avoid missing out.

Since I don't play much guitar, and I where the strap is located on the Hoffner, I was considering selling it to a used game store. Since this thing is apparently very limited, can I assume that this would be a bad idea and that I should keep it as some sort of collector's item? And then sell it for loads of monies?

You can't talk about selling your stuff on the forums, from my understanding. But the answer is YES, when these sell out, you'll have people paying obscene amounts of money for a time.

Gah, now that I think that through, I wonder why I am not doing this.

I don't care for Rock Band guitars anyway so it's not a HUGE loss for me... but they do look cool.

Still use my Xplorer. :o

Sometimes limited really does mean limited. Looks like that's the case here. We bought all of these day one, but the limited nature won't stop us from playing with them; indeed, since the Gretsch is the first RB guitar controller I find I can reasonably play with, I'm obligated to it. If it stops working down the road and can't be replaced, I'll just have to look Doc up...

Damn, no Beatles Rock Band for christmas.

If my Stratocaster conks out I'd love to get a Gretsch too, as I have the Rickenbacker (2 players in the house), but I can't bring myself to drop $100 on another plastic guitar, though I could think of it as decoration, LOL!

Who knows, I work in book retail and a "Limited Edition" box featuring "Limited Edition art" of a certain set of stupid vampire books sold out before last Christmas, they just made more of them and we had them again by the truckload come mid-January.

That sounds awfully familiar.

Good to hear that sales of the big bundle are doing well. I only bought the game and the Rick (as I already have the Ion drums, and plenty of mics, stands, etc.). I would love to get the Gretsch, too, but it is hard to justify spending another $100 on yet another guitar controller.

Yup...thats true here too...I haven't seen any in Best Buy or Wal-Mart Game Stop...of either the Gretch/Richenbacker ! and Target says they are only selling the 360 Rickenback . We finally saw one at Wal-Mart last week end. I thought the stores just hadn't gotten them in yet? Sure they do get some as I wanted to get hubby the Richenbacker for Christmas. But maybe not now? One thing for sure they all are selling alot faster than they thought!!

when you put the strap on the front button... put it "backwards" as it were.. slip it on with the side thats normally facing up on other guitars facing away from your belly..

the strap looks kind of twisted when you hold up the Bass by it.. but if you did it right it wont feel that way when worn

This is the exact point of Limited isn't it? $59 is still too much for a mic stand and postcards.

This was posted at another site and every one of the posters there were saying that this was false advertising, that the game wasn't selling all that well and they are using this as a way to boost sagging sales.

You hear that?

It's the sound of the people who thought The Beatles: Rock Band would flop eating their hats.

If anyone still wants the bundle, Gretsch or Rickenbacker, Sam's Club has them for $224 (bundle) and $78 (Grestch/Rickenbacker).

I got the Gretsch at GameStop for $27 since I had a lot of store credit from my PS2 and games.

Oh I was wondering about that. Glad I got mine (both!). EXCELLENT guitars.

I'm glad I got the LE bundle and both of the standalone guitars. I switch off between the Rick and the Gretsch, I don't want to wear one out early.

When I play RB2, I use my RB2 Strat. The Beatles guitars are just for The Beatles game.

I'm glad I pulled the trigger fast on a Rick for my sister's Christmas present. She's a big Lennon fan, I would have been disappointed if she missed out on it.

I want the Gretsch for Christmas and the Rick for my birthday (which is just the month after) hopefully the bf will have some sense and buy both when he sees them.

Ya know, since he's playing the game now after telling me he would never ever play any kind of Rock Band / Guitar Hero type game.
