Today's (Oct 7th) Tsunami Warnings and Watches have been cancelled. The wave does not pose a destructive threat to any shores other than ones it has already hit.
An earthquake earlier today in the Samoa Islands Region caused a deadly tsunami in Samoa and American Samoa. At least one Samoan Village was completely destroyed, and the number of casualties on that island remains unknown, while US National Parks Services are reporting fourteen were killed by a series of four 15-20 foot waves that washed as far as a mile inland on the small island of American Samoa. Damage elsewhere in the pacific was limited to stranded vehicles and water damage in coastal areas. New Zealand officials reported no damage when the much weakened tsunami arrived on their coast, and the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has since cancelled the Tsunami Warnings and Watches. Local advisories are in effect for high seas and strong currents, but the wave now poses little threat of massive inundation.
Areas on the coasts of Hawaii, Alaska, Washington, and British Columbia should be on guard for the tsunami over the next several hours. The wave is not large enough to cause widespread flooding, but beachgoers, boaters, and coastal structures may still be in danger.
Previous Text:
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has issued Tsunami Warnings for American Samoa, Samoa, Niue, Wallis-Fortuna, Tokelau, Cook Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu, Kiribati, Kermadec Is, Fiji, Howland-Baker, Jarvis Is, New Zealand, French Polynesia, Palmyra Island, Vanuatu, Nauru, Marshall Island, Solomon Island, Johnston Island, New Caledonia, Kosrae, Papua New Guinea, Pohnpei, and Wake Island.
A Tsunami Watch is in effect for Pitcairn, Midway Island, Chuuk, Australia, Marcus Island, N. Marianas, Guam, Indonesia, Antarctica, and Yap.
A magnitude 8.3 earthquake occurred 33km deep in the Samoa Islands Region at 17:48 UTC. (1:48PM EDT)
Sea Level readings indicate a tsunami was generated. It may have been destructive along coasts near the earthquake epicenter and could also be a threat to more distant coasts.
Most recent warning text: http://www.prh.noaa.gov/ptwc/messages/pacific/2009/pacific.2009.09.29.202119.txt
Edit: A Major Tsunami is not expected to strike the state of Hawaii; however, sea level changes and strong currents may occur along the coast that could be a hazard to swimmers, boaters, and beaches. Therefore, the Tsunami Watch is cancelled, but a Tsunami Advisory is in effect. The effects of the Tsunami are expected to begin around 1PM HST.

Update: 10-15 foot waves (3-5m) struck Pago Pago. "Cars were seen floating." (MSNBC (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/33075304/ns/world_news-asiapacific/?from=TIW&par=msnbcnews&site=weather&promo=0))

Sounds like bad news for the people that live there. I hope it doesn't turn disastrous.

Holy cow. The wave in American Samoa was 23 feet tall (almost 8 meters).

This is going to end poorly.

This isn't good. Flood deaths are always the most disturbing to me. What is an absolute necessity of life is also a killer, and it disturbs me, I guess

I'm happy to live in my safe little state of Maine.

Not necessarily. The New Zealand emergency services began taking action over an hour ago. There wasn't much that could be done for the areas around the epicenter, but the PTWC got the warnings out pretty quickly. This may be their crowning achievement as far as justifying the early warning systems in place around the Pacific.

Crap, the fact that Hawaii is so far out could mean that it's going to be a really big one by the time it gets there.
It's only a Tsunami Watch as of right now thankfully.

Other way around. The further away you are, the smaller the wave.
Edit: Actually, apparently it can go either way unpredictably.

American Samoa is a tiny U.S. territory that lies about halfway between Hawaii and New Zealand. It is home to about 65,000 people.
Holly Bundock, spokeswoman for the National Park Service's Pacific West Region in Oakland California, said "I would say we're alarmed," adding the service had heard from Mike Reynolds, superintendent of the National Park of American Samoa.
Reynolds told a Yellowstone dispatch operator that four tsunami waves, each 15 to 20 feet high, reaching half-mile to mile (1.6 miles) inland on island of Tutuila, where Pago Pago is.
"The National Park of American Samoa visitor center and its offices appear to be destroyed completely," Bundock said.
Reynolds reported deaths but had no confirmation of numbers, she said. "He's completely cut off from the rest of the island," Bundock said.
Also, updated warning from PTWC:
"A tsunami IS NOT expected along the California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, or Alaska coast. NO tsunami warning, watch or advisory is in effect for these areas."
Warning currently in effect for:
American Samoa, Samoa, Niue, Wallis-Fortuna, Tokelau, Cook Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu, Kiribati, Kermadec Is, Fiji, Howland-Baker, Jarvis Is., New Zealand, Fr. Polynesia, Palmyra Is., Vanuatu, Nauru, Marshall Is., Solomon Is, Johnston Is, New Caledonia, Kosrae, Papua New Guinea, Pohnpei, and Wake Island.
Watch in effect for:
Pitcairn, Midway, Chuuk, Australia, Marcus Is., N. Marianas, Guam, Indonesia, Antarctica, and Yap.
(Hawaii not mentioned, but the watch has not been cancelled there yet.)

Wha? If it's from the same earthquake, feels like it would've hit by now. And if it did... well, it would've done something to Hawaii on the way. And it didn't.

It was a Tsunami Advisory for you all, actually, and was indeed from the same earthquake. Advisories are issued when the wave is expected to be less than a meter tall. These (http://origin-wcatwc.arh.noaa.gov/previous.events/09-29-09-Samoa/09-29-09.html) are the measured wave heights for the tsunami. When the wave is so small, there's really no threat to anyone but beachgoers. The wave travels exceptionally fast, but still, it did have a long way to travel (http://wcatwc.arh.noaa.gov/2009/09/29/424649/09/ttvu424649-09.jpg).
It passed Honolulu at about 1PM local time yesterday, Jecca. ;)

Got another possible tsunami from an 8.0 earthquake near Vanuatu.
Advisory in effect for Hawaii. If dangerous Tsunami waves are detected, they'll up it to a watch or warning. Earliest arrival time for the waves at the islands is 6:50PM HST.
Warnings are in effect for:
Vanuatu, Solomon Islands, Papua New Guinea, Nauru, Tuvalu, New Caledonia, Fiji, Kiribati, Kosrae, Wallis-Futuna, and Howland-Baker.
Watch in effect for:
Marshal Islands, Tokelau, Kermadec Is., Pohnpei, New Zealand, Somoa, American Somoa, Tonga, Australia, Niue, Cook Islands, Chuuk, Indonesia, Wake Island, Jarvis Is., Palmyra Is., Guam, N. Marianas, Johnston Islands, Yap, Marcus Islands, and Belau.
Don't know if a tsunami was generated yet or not. The wave should be arriving in the Solomon Islands soon, so I'll update this when I hear anything from there.
