I have been waiting to get Rock Band for my PS2, but am so tired of the push date. Plus have been wanting to upgrade anyway. So, I have the option to get the entire game and the new system for either Xbox or PS3, which one would you say is better. I have til Friday to decide what I want my X-mas present to be.

Any help is appreciated

Played some games on Xbox Live and it worked perfectly, i had no trouble whatsoever. It proberly just depends on where you have the most friends.

Well right now if you want more games get Xbox360.

If you want a Blu-ray player go PS3.

It also does depend a lot on what system your friends have. If a majority of them have Xbox360 then go with that. Same thing with the PS3.

I personally love my 360. The games on there have been awesome.

There's another option that will tide you over: get the PS3 version of Rock Band plus the PS2 stand-alone version and a USB hub. The instruments are completely compatible with the PS2 version of the game.

Yes, most of my friends have PS2, so I would assume if they upgrade they will also go to PS3. Are the games from PS2 compatible with the PS3? Has anyone gone from one to the other?

If *all* you are considering is the Rock Band experience, then the 360's version is better, as long as you don't mind paying $50 a year for online play. They get achievements and voice chat, though their guitar is wired (but the guitar hero wireless guitars work with it, so that's more or less mitigated).

The PS3 version has no voice chat, no achievements, and you can't use GH guitars for it (at the moment). It does have free online play and a wireless guitar, however.

If you're looking at the whole package, PS3 vs 360, there's a hell of a lot more to consider. I like the PS3 a lot, but pretty much anyone who only has one of the consoles is biased towards their own, so take that as you will.

if this thread is about what console to pick, do some research.. both systems have pros and cons

i will say though, buying the game AND a new console - you're gonna burn a hole in your parents pocket this christmas.. i'd suggest your new years resolution is to pick up 2-3 jobs during the school year lol

Well, if you take Rock Band out of the picture for one second and think about all the great exclusive games for each console, that might help. It all boils down to what YOU want and where your loyalties lie. If all of your friends have PS2's, I am willing to be that they have or will have a PS3 at some point, though.

Yes, most of my friends have PS2, so I would assume if they upgrade they will also go to PS3. Are the games from PS2 compatible with the PS3? Has anyone gone from one to the other?

The 40 GB PS3 has no backward compatibility, but the 80 GB has software-based backward compatibility that supports reportedly 95% of PS3 games at present. (If you can still find a 60 GB--and there are some around--they have full backward compatibility built into the hardware).

I wouldn't assume your friends will go PS3, though--I've seen a lot of people go from PS2 to 360 because they felt the games offered on the 360 were more along the lines of what they wanted.

I went with the PS3 because several of my favorite PS2 exclusives are headed there, including Ratchet & Clank (already there), Final Fantasy, and Metal Gear Solid.

At this point, you actually get a bit more bang for the buck with the PS3, simply because it has Wi-Fi and Blu-ray built in, whereas each of those features is an extra expense for all 360 models (XBox fans, feel free to correct me on that if I got it wrong), so if wireless Internet and High Def movie discs are important to you, the PS3 has the edge in that regard. Also, access to online play through the PSN network is free, whereas XBL has a subscription cost.

As Nate Finch says, though, for this specific game, the 360 has the edge right now:

360 - Voice Chat, Achievements, peripheral compatibility
PS3 - Wireless guitar controller

Yes, so far I might be more edged on getting a PS3, as I am sure most will upgrade to the same. Not really into a bunch of games. As I am a 31 year old woman, that likes the interactive games for hosting parties. I orginally only got the PS2 for Dance Dance Revolution. Now hooked on Guitar Hero. And soon to be addicted to Rock Band.

I know reliving the youth. I wonder what the average age is for the Guitar Hero gamer?

Spot on. If most people are being Genuine, the systems are both good. Having the capability to to play the same games as your Real life friends is most important. I know my buddy and I splitting Playstation Downloadable games has been great!

When people get reallly flamed up about one system or another just ask... which one has a heavy/light controller. har...

I'm 46 and I think these games shaved about ten years off my age...

As I said in my first post, though, you don't have to upgrade your system just yet. You can get the PS2 version of Rock Band as a stand alone game and then get the PS3 bundle.

You'll have a Guitar controller, drum controller, and mic, and if you already have a PS2 guitar controller, you can use that as your fourth instrument.

You will need a hub if you go PS2, though.

Glad to know I am not the only adult that is so Gun Ho about it. Yea, if Best Buy doesn't have Rock Band tomorrow, gonna just get all this is a X-mas present from Santa.....

Than the decision will be 40GB or 80GB

God I can't wait til this weekend, as I will be able to get my gift earlier... yeah

Like many have said, depends on your current situation.

I have an existing library of PS2 games, my friedns have PS3, and I am a Gran Turismo fan, so I went with PS3.

Forgot to mention, if you want to play PS2 games, try ti get a 60 gig...it has the best backwards compatibility.

Ugh. That is mostly true if you like lots of shooters and sports games. PS3 has a tad bit more variety. But I'm sure logic won't assuage you.

The new 40GB sadly has no PS2 game support at this time (does support PS1 though). If you can get your hands on something other than the 40GB model, do it. Someone told me they got a 20GB model used for $270 at EB.

The migration was easy. You create virtual PS2 memory cards on the system's HDD, and you can copy your save data to them (gotta buy a memory card adapter though).

I've messed around with both systems a lot and I have to say that I really like the neat & tidy feel of XMB. Dashboard seems really disorganized to me.

There's a ton of cross-platform games, so you're really well off with either system. The exclusives on the PS3 are more attractive to me, but that's really a personal taste thing. After 20 years of PC shooters, I don't really see the attraction to console shooters, so there's not a whole lot of allure to the exclusive 360 games. Plus, a lot of them are available on PC too (Shadowrun, Bioshock, Halo, and such). If I ever get the hankering for one of them, such as I did for Bioshock, chances are I can pick it up on PC.

Oh, also, the 40GB only has 2 USB ports, so you'll need a hub. Some people see this as an issue, but it doesn't bother me. I usually have more than 4 things plugged in anyways, so a hub is always required for me. And I've got a bunch of hubs lying around in boxes gathering dust anyways. I think I heard that the PS2 version of Rock Band comes with a 4 port hub.

Eye Toy, PS Eye, RB Strat x2, Drums, Mic/headset, USB cable for charging controller & transferring stuff to PSP, Keyboard, Mouse, wired aftermarket controller, etc... yeah... what is that, 10+ ports I need?

I bought a Wii with parties in mind. It's awesome for group-play at parties, but other than that, there's not a lot I do with it. I will always buy Metroid, Zelda, and Mario games, just because they're like my childhood friends.

One of the things that attracts me to the PS3 is the vast variety of genre's. The 360 has stepped it up a bit with Arcade, and the Wii is doing some of it too. Still no beating the Playstation for a wide variety of quality games though. DDR, hack&slash, Karaoke, Eye Toy, small arcade-like games, Eye of Judgment, platformers, Buzz!, adventure, RPG, and shooters. Of course, time will tell if the PS3 lives up to all of it, but it has certainly brought some great stuff to the table already.

Yea I also have the old games for my PS2. Just remembering the days when Arcades actually existed for like .25. Now you go to Dave and Busters and even if they have Centipede cost anywhere from$1-$2 to play. Forget trying to play other games, way to expensive. Rather play at home and have a good time.

Thanks Guys. I just got the message that Santa bought me the PS3 and Rock Band and bringing it down tonight. Have a Toys for Tots fundraiser tonight, so will attempt to set everything up tomorrow. Hopefully that goes off without a hitch.

I am so excited, you have no idea.

Yep, stuff like Rayman Raving Rabbids is awesome for parties. Even Wii Sports is a hit. But DDR, GH, and RB are also popular, so I think you can have a great party with any system pretty much. I'd like to see more 7 player PS3 games jump into the party genre.

Than the decision will be 40GB or 80GB

The $100 difference gets you

2 more USB ports (no hub needed for Rock Band...save about $20 or so)
40 GB more of HDD (great for DLC, downloading videos, MP3s etc)
Backward compatibility (you can play DDR, but you might need to find a way to get the dance pad to work)
Motorstorm (desert racing game)

I think the 40 GB is still packaged with Spider-Man 3 on Blu-ray for free, and either console gets you 5 free Blu-ray movies (from a list of about 25 fairly mediocre choices).

EDIT: Whoops! Looks like I posted a tad too late!

Enjoy your new system!

Yea, I have no idea what PS3 I am gonna get until I get it tonight. Santa is not familiar with any of the differences. So, I guess it depends on how generous he wanted to be and what the Best Buy Service guy told him.
