View Full Version : Where to start with Dinosaur Jr.?
I've heard that the group heavily influenced Kurt Cobain by their heavy abrasive guitar style. So what is a good starting point for the band. What is their most accessible album?

How about Farm?
"farm"'s really good as well... kinda like a slightly less perfect album than "beyond".

I was thinking of asking this very question last night in the musical recommendations thread.
I'll check out your picks, 'stasis.

"green mind" features the smoking girl, and is my favorite one behind "beyond".

I've said this before, but Dinosaur Jr. is pretty much the most consistent band to ever exist. Everything from their 1985 debut from before they added the Jr. to their 2009 album Farm is fantastic. The only problem is that J Mascis only knows how to write 10 songs or so, but he still manages to make it sound great. :p
Also, necker, like I said, they're really consistent, so you'll want to check out every one of their albums.

both are good.
"hand it over" is the weaker of the two, but "where you been" is pretty essential.

NOOOOO!!!!
Hand it Over is easily my favorite Dino J album. So incredibly underrated, if you ask me. "Alone" has one of the most perfect guitar solos ever.

in all fairness, a while ago I made a separate YYYs recommendation thread and no one called it out.
And I like this thread because Dinosaur Jr is another band Im trying to get into more

no, it was here.
the point is I think its ok to have focused discussions when it comes to music recommendations. The "official" music recommendations thread strikes me as a quick Q&A forum

Beyond is probably the best starting point for Dinosaur Jr, and after that you can pretty much go anywhere, though Green Mind and Farm are probably the best step after that.
My personal favorites are Bug and You're Living All Over Me if you feel like jumping right in.

Bug, Green Mind, Where You Been?, and Farm. You're Living All Over Me is the Ok Computer of Dinosaur Jr. to me. Highly praised and a Great album, but Idk I like some of their other material better.

Great album, but I wouldn't recommend it to a Dinosaur Jr. newbie.
