View Full Version : Any particular reason why everyone hates I Want You (She's so Heavy)

Today I played a very long sessions of online TBRB, with me on drums. I had a few very good sessions with four players, one that lasted well over an hour. I finally decide to pick I Want You (She's so Heavy)... and everyone leaves. That definitely doesn't seem very "sportsman" like, considering everyone gets a turn to pick a song.
Just a little rant, I just have no idea why this song seems to be so disliked. Almost the Visions of TBRB.

This, exactly. It's a great song, but the ending is just boring on guitar and vocals. It's just like "god, cut off already".

Longest song in the game, only 14 different words in the lyrics, incredibly repetitive.....
I mean, I like the song, but it's kind of obvious why a lot of people won't.

I've never particularly enjoyed the song in the first place (and I have excuses to like almost every other Beatles song). The song annoys me because it seems like very lazy songwriting; repetitive lyrics and melody. The other fact is that it is just too darn long. I also feel like the whole group was bored while performing it (i.e. lack of energy on the track)

I absolutely love the song, but it's not exactly lightning in a bottle for a rhythm game. I'm more than happy to play it any time it's selected myself though. Even on vocals... it gives me more excuse to hum the guitar parts, close my eyes and wobble around like an idiot.

I love the Santana-esque sound of the song, and I always have - but as a vocalist, it isn't the most interesting song on the disk to play. Still, I don't quit when someone picks it (I just take a break for the second half).

To me, it goes into the "Epic 7+ minute songs with an awesome instrumental ending" list.
It's epic. However, I do agree that it's annoying to listen to the instrumental EVERY TIME. I normally skip it when I'm listening to Abbey Road when it starts the instrumental, because I want to get to the medley quickly. =3

I'm very surprised that it took well over an hour for your group to pick I Want You (She's So Heavy).
I don't hate the song, but it's not my favorite. And although it might be my least favorite in the game, I still think it's a great song.
I've never quit because I didn't like the song that was chosen, but I do let out a sigh of disappointment to myself when someone chooses this paticular song.
The reason being, from my experience, it seems to be chosen more often than any other song. Which is why I am surprised by your experience.
Perhaps the three you were hooked up with have found the same thing to be true, and they are tired of having it chosen?

I like the song, but I don't like playing it as a vocalist.
Some parts are too low for me and I have to switch octaves on and off.. it gets a little annoying.
Also, people only seem to pick the song because of the "million points" thing. Seriously, you can get a friggin million on Ticket To Ride. Just saying.
If I play I Want You (She's So Heavy), I want to play it because I want to play it. Not because it's most likely to get a million points because it's so long.

It's a great song, but it just isn't very fun in RB, especially for vocalists. On the other instruments, it's very repetitve and not particularly challenging. It really should have been saved for the Abbey Road DLC. The rooftop didn't need another song (as it already had 5) and another song (like All My Loving, I Should Have Known Better, or I'm A Loser) could have been added to the Ed Sullivan chapter to make the story more balanced. To me, it's the one mistake that was made in an otherwise spectacular game.

I love this song as well, but I can understand where a few people are coming from. Yes, it does drag on a bit too long, and that's probably the reason why.
I play all instruments, but I vox practically most of the time because there never seems to be vocalists online, and I like to have a full band playing. I know there's a huge chunk of the song where there's nothing for the vocalist to sing, but I don't mind it one single bit. I don't understand why some are complaining about that. Its fun, and relaxing, to just sit back and watch the rest of the band play. Maybe its just me, but I certainly enjoy it.

Also, for people complaining that the end part is too long - come on, the final instrumental stretch is what, 3 1/2 minutes long? That might be long by Beatles standards, but in the world of endless repetitive jamming, it is but a trifle.

I've had one person leave when I picked this song before
The fact that there's no singing for the last 3 minutes or so gives me a chance to take a break and do other stuff while everyone else is playing on.

This song really divides people it seems. I love the song because of it's long epic feel and frequently use it as a closer for the night. It just has a great blues feel to it that I feel makes it work well for the game.
Those who say it is boring at the end are obviously not playing the bass or the drums because those are the hardest parts of the song for those instruments. I guess all the guitarists who play these games are mad because they have to be the ones to sit back for once while the other instruments go crazy lol.

Yeah, I wish they had a dreamscape for that song and any other song (I Me Mine) that wasn't actually played during the rooftop performance. They wouldn't even have to do a dreamscape, just make it a video of them playing in the studio.

I love playing this song. On everything, well except vocals but that's only because I haven't tried it yet. Bass is the best instrument to play this song on though. Then Drums and then guitar. I don't care how boring guitar gets at the end, I play it at least 3 times a night if I'm doing guitar.

Drums are not fun on GGaHT. The drum part during guitar solo 2 is just horrendously repetitive. I don't mind long, but ~5 minutes of doing the exact same thing? Vox aren't really fun either, because it's no fun watching the guitarist whittle away at the strings while you get to play some tambourine every half minute or so.
On-topic: I guess the guitarists and, to a lesser extent, the vocalists are none too happy with this song. To the vocalists: Guys (and gals), this is the one song on the disc that has a really long instrumental section. Sing to it and be glad it's not GGaHT or Pick Up the Pieces. ;)
And the guitarists? Yes, I understand where they're coming from (I mainly play guitar myself). But this song is worth it. Get with the flow and enjoy the sight of your bassist doing some work.

Personally, I always viewed the songs lack of vocals okay, considering every other song is very heavy and very fun on vocals. Plus, the game needed one of Lennon's crazy avant-garde songs :)

10-06-2009, 11:47 PM
Is this a serious question? I love the song, espcially the guitar solo, but the last 90 seconds or so stick out like a sore thumb compared to the rest of the disc.
Every solo, fill, and harmony on the other 44 songs has purpose and meaning, whereas this song it's like they forgot the record button was on for an extra two minutes.
And you have to be careful blasting others as selfish, when you're picking a 7 minute song. Most of their choices are 3 minutes each.

Have you played it on drums? I would definitely say every fill was there for a reason. The same goes for bass.
Of course, the guitar is admittedly repetitive. In confines of the song, though, I think it's great. Lennon was very into challenging song structure, and I think it really shows. Plus, like I said, the game needs some Lennon+heroin represenation :D
I realize that it doesn't translate perfectly to the game... however, in my experience, bass and drums are both very active in the later half of the song, two instruments that are very often intended to simply keep rhythm.
I guess I just have some affinity for the song. I think it's fantastic how Lennon could come up with a song with only a few lines, and sing them in so many ways to convey so many different emotions. Plus I love the blues licks.

I actually think the song is very varied, with the exception of the last minute or so.
The problem is that minute feels like three or four. The inflection of the words may vary, but a great deal of the music is the same throughout the song and by the time you get to the end and it changes up, it changes into something extremely repetitive instead. This is definitely one of my least favorite songs on the disc, and apart from the potential to assist with the Million Suns achievement, I can't recommend playing it.

Well yes, but when you get right down to it, any song with a verse-chorus-verse structure is somewhat repetitive. The song does appear to be made up of one main blues lick and drum beat, however, it still changes and isn't outright repeated too many times. If you're not really a fan of that lick, however, it may seem like it.

I think the song was included in the game because it was the last thing the Beatles did as a group. From Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_Want_You_%28She%27s_So_Heavy%29:
The overdub session for "I Want You (She's So Heavy)" was the last time all four of the Beatles worked in the studio together. That makes it an important moment in the history of the band and worthy of inclusion on the disc.
Also, for those complaining that it is a part of the rooftop concert and not a dreamscape, I think it is in fact a dreamscape, albeit a subtle one. Notice how the rendering changes as the song progresses and how the screen goes completely black at the end. None of the other concert venues do anything like that.

I love playing this song and I love listening to this song. I play it in almost every session I do in TB:RB. Nice Bass groove to it, easy and mellow but tricky in spots. Very cool song. I sometimes do find myself looking for the home stretch of that final note at the end, but more as an accomplishment rather than getting it over with.
Can't wait for the rest of Abbey Road, one of the finest collections of music ever created IMO.

Which, it's worth noting, they can get with other, more popular songs, such as Sgt. Pepper/Little Help and All You Need is Love. Mind you, people on the PS3 can't get it from All You Need is Love, but they could use Sgt. Pepper. It's trickier, but it can definitely be done. We almost had it (about 20k short) with Sgt. Pepper, with two people on Expert and two on Hard. With AYNIL at the same difficulties, we blew right past it by about 90k without even trying.

And this. Like JoJo and someone else mentioned, it's a great song to listen to. It seems the biggest gripe with everyone who doesn't like it is the ending. Goddamn, wouldja listen to that ending? Songs don't always have to keep your fingers busy to be awesome. That ending is heavy and sad and wonderful. Someone said they would like the song if it weren't for the ending. Well let me tell you, good sir, the song wouldn't have nearly the amount of power it has if that ending had been cut off. Honestly, I could've done with a few more minutes, coz it's that awesome.

What sucks about this song is that if people had NEVER heard of the song before, and they're the singer(s), then they have no clue as to when the overdrive should be used.
Even when I tell them to use it at that point, they don't, and the score is quite low.

The repetition is the point, it creates a very distinct mood, in case anyone didn't notice...if you take it in context that it came out in 1969 it's pretty amazing really.
Plus it's not actually that repetitive, if you really listen to it, it builds through the whole ending. The guitar chart could have been made less repetitive, had HMX chose to switch between multiple guitar parts, to make the chart more interesting. Certainly not something to hold against the song itself...

Actually, they do. The bass plays the alternate guitar part for half the outro, then switches to the actual bass line, while the guitar plays half of one guitar part, then switches to the other one half way through the outro.
Not much anyone can do about vocalists complaining about this song, unless of course we really wanted HMX to put in fake tamborine taps just to give them something to do(like RB):D

Yes, if you play well, that can be done. Activating Beatlemania together is the key when going for the Million Suns achievement.
However, if all goes horribly and you can't get it, wait for the Abbey Road medley. Assuming that it counts as one song while playing, it's pretty much a guaranteed achievement, even with just two people.

The next time you have a chance to listen to it, just queue up the first half up to this song and then listen to Here Comes the Sun and the rest of the b-side.

It's actually the best song ever in rhythm games IMO. Better than anything else in TB:RB, RB (including DLC) and any GH.

Love everything about the song -- including the end.
