This first one even I'm puzzled over how somebody managed to convince having such decor at a launch party...

Fortune’s latest annual list of the 101 Dumbest Moments in Business features Sony twice, once for having a dead goat at the launch of God of War II, and again for the scuffle with the Catholic Church over using Manchester Cathedral as the backdrop for PS3 game, Resistance: Fall of Man.
While Sony is fortunate enough to be featured in Fortune not once but twice this year, unfortunately it’s not for anything good.
This year Sony placed on Fortune’s annual 101 Dumbest Moments in Business list of truly poor business decisions twice. Surrounded by choice moments like Leona Helmsley leaving 12 million dollars to her dog Trouble upon her death, Sony represents the gaming industry at its very finest.
The first placement, number 61, was for Sony’s decision to feature a whole, dead, and eviscerated goat at the launch party for Greek themed game God of War II. In actuality the goat was from a local butcher and not ritualistically killed and eaten on site, but it still caused quite a PR stir. Perhaps it was simply an incredibly misguided salute to Greek culture, but the suggestion of reaching inside the steaming carcass of a dead animal still landed Sony its first spot on the list of shame.
Second but not far away at number 63 was Sony’s highly controversial use of the Catholic Manchester Cathedral as the backdrop for their PlayStation 3 game, Resistance: Fall of Man. The incident certainly got its share of bad press with the Catholic Church taking a strong stance against the game, at one point demanding that it be pulled from shelves. While it’s possible that this issue got blown out of proportion, going up against the Catholic Church is probably not the best business for any company.
Oh, and in case you’re wondering, Microsoft ended up on the list as well. Only with Microsoft, it was only its PR firm mistakenly sending an internal email of the profile of a Wired journalist to the writer himself. Certainly not a very public boo-boo, nor actually related to games at all.
Oh well Sony, it’s almost the end of the year. Here’s to clean slate 2008!
