Broken Beatles Rock Band Drum Set

I apologize if this has been posted before- I tried to search for a common thread, but found nothing. I bought the Beatles Rock Band set for the Wii for $140 and on the SAME night of purchase, the drums stopped working. The Yellow pad now only registers my taps 20-30% of the time. I have had rock band before, so I knew to take extreme caution with hitting the drums too hard, but my efforts were to no avail. Is this typically something that can be fixed by troubleshooting or is it time to send the drum set back for replacement?
