View Full Version : Tab Sharing!

DeadPhoenix223

I thought of a killer idea: Since most of us play some kind of instrument, and alot of us play Guitar and Bass, then there should be a Tab-Sharing thread. So I made one!

Heres how I want it to work:

Include:

Song Name
-Difficulty 1-10 (1 being easy, 10 being impossible)
-Artist
-Youtube/video of song
-The actual tabs
-How many times have you played this song?
-What is the instrument?

So go ahead
:D :D :D

EDIT: We Have Requests Now!
YYZ - Rush - Drum Tabs

The numbers represent which fret you should be holding down and the lines that the numbers are on determines which string the fret should be held down on. I'm still new to tabs so a few things about them don't make sense to me, but I know the basics.

Few basic tab symbols you should know:

h = hammer-on
p = pull-off
^ or b = bend (usually the tabber specifies quarter, half, or full bend)
pm, ., * = palm-mute (located under the notation)

Those are the basic guitar tab symbols. There's a lot more like trills, pinch harmonics, and harmonics and it differs depending on the tabber.

I'm kind of a master tabber, lol. I've tabbed hundreds of songs and have learned hundreds reading tabs also.

They mean a completely muted string.

To do them just place your fingers lightly on the string, don't fret the string, and then just strum the string(s) to get the muted effect.

No. Using your fretting hand, lightly press the string and pick it. It should make a percussive sound.

More tab terminology:

/ = slide finger up to indicated note
\ = slide finger down to indicated note
ph = pinch harmonic (sometimes indicated with *)
ah - artificial harmonic (basically same thing as pinch harmonic)
* = natural harmonic (located on the 5th, 7th and 12th frets)

With harmonics, you're actually fretting the strings, but instead of strumming you lightly tap 12 frets higher up.

Sort of, except the "natural harmonics", which you're referring to by lightly touching the string. Natural harmonics are on the 5th, 7th, and 12th frets. To do them, place your finger lightly in between the 5th and 6th frets (right on the fret divider) to get those nice harmonic sounds.

Muted strings are different.

There's no right way to tab a song. Depending on the tabber, they may use different symbols meaning different things than somebody else. I've seen harmonics tabbed in a lot of different including the one you said.

<12>
12*
12h

Those are just a few. I guess that's why some people have a hard time reading tabs because not everybody uses the same symbols.

I used to use tabs but I found I learned the song better by just having the basics and finding out the nuances by myself. For example I would get the chords with the lyrics and play along and figure out what the guitar was doing. The Raw data would look like this.

Intro: C, C, Am7, Am7, G, G, F, F

Lyrics:

1. [C] I never meant to cause you any [Am7] sorrow.
[G] I never meant to cause you any [F] pain. [F4]
[C] I only want one time see you [Am7] laughing.
I [G] only want to see you laughing
in the purple [C] rain.

R. Purple rain, purple [F] rain. [F4]
[F] Purple rain, purple [C] rain.
[Am7] Purple rain, purple [G] rain.
I only want to see you baby
In the purple [C] rain.

2. I never wanted to be your weekend [C] lover. [Am7]
[G] I only wanted to be some kind of [F]friend, hey. [F4]
[C] Baby I could never steal you from an[Am7]other.
[G] Such a shame our friendship has to [C] end.

R. Purple rain, purple [F] rain. [F4]
[F] Purple rain, purple [C] rain.
[Am7] Purple rain, purple [G] rain.
I only want to see you underneath
In the purple [C] rain.

3. Honey I know, I know, I know times are [C] changin'. [Am7]
[G] It's time we all reach out for something [F] new.
That means you too. [F4]
[C] You say you want a leader,
[Am7] But you can't seem to make up your mind.
I think you better close [G] it.
And let me guide you to the purple [C] rain.

R. Purple rain, purple [F] rain. [F4]
[F] Purple rain, purple [C] rain.
(Whew! If you know what I'm singin' about,
Help me and [Am7] come on raise your hand.)
[Am7] Purple rain, purple [G] rain.
I only want to see you, I only want to see you
In the purple [C] rain.

In that video, he's doing tapped harmonics. Those are a little different.

Here's an example of harmonics in Linkin Park's 'Pushing Me Away':

The whole intro is all harmonics. Watch how he's just slightly touching the strings in between the 5th, 7th, and 12th frets.

Linkin Park is notorious for using a lot of harmonics, so that's why I gave them as an example.

Tabs are 100x easier to read for the average musician who doesn't know music theory. I know a little music theory so I can read sheet music, but I still like to go with tabs because of their overall simplicity.

Nope, none of that stuff is on tabs like time signatures and key signatures. That's why for the average musician, who knows virtually no theory, use tabs. All you have to do for tabs is play the song and follow along and try to pick up the time signature on your own.

Ohhhh you just place a finger on the string and play the other notes but play the note that your finger is on as well. For example play a chord and don't press down all the way on one of the notes and that is the general idea. I honestly never use this except for when playing banjo.

I think I've figured it out. It's like harmonics, but you just leave your finger on the string when you strum, right?

Ohhhh you just place a finger on the string and play the other notes but play the note that your finger is on as well. For example play a chord and don't press down all the way on one of the notes and that is the general idea. I honestly never use this except for when playing banjo.

So I'm right then...

Yes, keep your finger on the string, but don't fret the string. That's the idea.

Yes I did, and I already know what harmonics are!!!

I want to know how to MUTE A STRING.

With muting you're cutting the sound off completely. Lightly press with your fingertips the string you want to mute, it should make a percussive sound.

Alright, thanks guys. I completely understand now.

can we ask for tabs if people know something we like?
cause i have been looking for a yyz drums tab.
oh, and some bonham rudiments.:D

I didn't even know drum tabs existed. How the hell do those work?

Speaking of which, does anybody have a good technique for sweep picking? I'm not talking 2 or 3 string sweeps, I'm talking 4, 5, and 6 string sweeps. That's my one achilles heel in my guitar playing.

There's not many drum tabs compared to guitar tabs on the internet. They work basically the same as guitar/bass tabs except instead of each line indicating the right string, they have each line representing a pedal, tom, cymbal, hi-hat, or whatever. And they usually contain the time signature and proper beats to make it easier.

Realy?

Pinch harmonics seem so much harder than sweep picking.
But thats just me.

Basicly, with sweep picking, you just try to keep your motion as fluid as possible. And practice alot. And I mean ALOT.

You should get used to it in a few years.

Really? I can sort of do pinch harmonics and I've only been playing for a few months.

Complete opposite for me. I found pinch harmonics extremely easy.

For sweep picking though, I can do a basic pattern, but very slow. When I try to up the bpm's, I start to get sloppy. I have no problem with up to 3 string sweeps, just 4, 5, and 6 strings. I watch guys like Jeff Loomis and John Petrucci just do sweep picking like it's nothing. Loomis even does 7-string sweeps!

I've only really been practicing sweeps for a couple of years now, so I guess I still need to practice more.

With my big ass hands, pinch harmonics just don't work out right.

And if sweeping just isn't your thing, try tapping scales. It has the same fluid sound as sweeping.

This is a riff from a strokes song (vision of division) which i really like the sound of, so ive been trying to learn it these past couple of days.

Its kicking my ass so i can't play it up to full speed yet, but im working on it :P

Riff goes from :50 to 1:05 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E32VkKPcBlE)

*all is played with a light palm mute* standard tuning

Drum tabs are really confusing for me to read, I need sheet music. So if any one here knows a good place to get drum sheet music let me know.

I am in the same boat, but finding actual sheet music for drums is almost impossible. You can usually find hugely popular songs but as soon as you want something that wasn't a smash hit, good freaking luck.

About 20 minutes away from my house I saw a music shop that had all the songs in Rock Band as sheet music for drums and guitar, there was also another book for guitar solos from the game. It was pretty cool to see all those scribbles in Bodhissattva. :p

This little solo thingy is way out of my range if I wanted to play full speed, but I like it because its a really good left and right hand guitar exercise and it sounds wicked good.

This is just a part of a Paul Gilbert solo that I saw on youtube.

Here is how it sounds at full speed. Paul Gilbert. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KsUphx0yn4o)

Paul Gilbert is extremely overrated IMO. He plays some cool riffs though. I'm learning "Technical Difficulties" by Racer X right now. Fun song to play on guitar.
