This is something that kind of bothers me so I thought to come here and ask. First let me explain the set up in my house.
Video Display: Sony Wega 32" Widescreen CRT TV supports 1080i
Sound System: Sony 5-disc Home theater system supporting Doulby pro logic II
Console: XBox 360 using component video, HDTV setting on 1080i and Optical out for sound.
Now the video stuff connects directly to the TV but I leave the red and white audio cables unplugged. The fiber optic cable for the digital sound connects directly into the sound input on the home theater system.
For calibration, I went in and manually configured the lag, fixing the video/audio sync correctly (which is at 55MS) and leaving the lag off set at 0. When I play in a band with me on guitar and someone on drums, the drums miss a lot. Same thing with happens if there is a singer and me on guitar singer misses a lot.
When we went through the calibration of the drums, it comes to just under MS so we set it to 45 most times. this helps out drummer and singer tremendously, but now I'm missing a ton of notes on guitar. I have noticed that if the lag off set is 0 and I play drums, I miss notes as well but when the off set is 45 MS I do fine on drums.
From what I can gather through my testing is that the lag offset in the options applies to all instruments currently attached to the game no matter who is signed in and playing those instruments. If the person signed in on the drums changes the lag offset from 0 to 45 it affects the guitar player.
I'd like to know if there is a way to fix this so that my drums and mic can be played with the guitars or do I need to RMA the mic and drum kit?

Still looking for some kind of answer to this problem. we tried the auto calibration last night and that didn't help. I'd like to know if I'm going to have to be out a couple of instruments or if getting them replaced will solve the issue

Have you gone into your settings for your surround sound to see if what sort of calibration it has for sound lag? My Samsung system was doing this same thing and after looking into it I found that the Samsung was set at 50ms, so I turned it to 0 ms and things have gotten a good deal better. There's still a bit of lag and I'm trying to figure out what's causing that, but otherwise it's not nearly as terrible.

I haven't checked that, but I did do an in-game video/audio sync and got sound output to match the video output. That really helps the guitar parts but drums still lags behind.

Generally the guitar and the drum controllers have slightly different lag values. You will have to split the difference.
You're welcome to try the calibration method I wrote (linked in my sig) and see if that helps you. I would be surprised to find your drums have a delay of zero.
Are you running Dolby Digital 5.1 or just Dolby Pro Logic? Did you turn Dolby Digital on in the sound settings?
