My favorites that I can't decide between are in Hey by Pixies, Sweet Child O' Mine by Guns N' Roses, and The Seeker by The Who. (Remember that more than random flailing on the guitar goes into a good solo.)

TTFAF has a good solo, but that's because it's incredibly fast =P It does still sound good.

There are way too many good solos to say which is the best, and I can't even begin to say what I would think is the best.

Good call...

this song sucks. there are sooooooo many better guitar solo's out there. this song is nothing but seeing how fast you can play and and many notes you can pick. there is zero creatvity in this solol.

There's a lot of creativity and skill in Through the Fire and the Flames, I even used to listen to it purely for pleasure before GH3 came along and ruined it. My criteria for best solo would be 85% listening enjoyment 15% skill, so I don't think TTFATF, as good a solo as it has, really comes anywhere near the top of the list.

The best part of Stairway to me was the singing after the solo. The solo's great, but Once Plant starts yelling the last verse he kind of turns the whole thing into an intro for him. Totally owns* Page right there imo.

I think Eric Clapton does some extraordinary work, but I can't think of any song in particular of his that I would suggest as BEST guitar solo ever.

There's a Neil Young song called Like a Hurricane. The singing on the song kind of makes me cringe a little, but once the solo's get going, I would honestly say that I find it emotionally moving. Plus it's a decently difficult solo. That's my pick.

*Edit: I don't mean own in an internet way, I mean own as in ownership. Like he exists just to provide an intro for the last verse.

I like Clapton's solo from "Crossroads" (with Cream)...
David Gilmour's solo in "Comfortably Numb"always sends chills up my spine (with Pink Floyd)...
Duane Allman during "Whipping Post" (on "At Fillmore East") is simply magical (with the Allman Brothers Band...
last but not least, I always enjoy Mark Knopfler's solo in "Sultans of Swing" (with Dire Straits)

TTFATF's solo is a little too mechanical to be considered a 'great' guitar solo, in my opinion - however, I still like Dragonforce and think they are a rather decent group. It just seems like a lot of 'uber technical' bands out there sacrifice emotion and feeling for endless guitar/drum/bass/vocal wankery.

I'm kind of split on what I would consider my favorite guitar solo. Instead of going by skill, I tend to prefer solos that are emotionally powerful, creative, or just plain cool-sounding.

My list:
"Kid" by The Pretenders (What a powerful solo...I love the country-esque twang James Honeyman-Scott put into it.)
"Paranoid Android" by Radiohead (In terms of creativity and awesomeness.)
"Rise Above" by Black Flag (Absolutely spaztastic.)
"Maggot Brain" by Funkadelic (The whole song would probably be considered a guitar solo, though.)
"Smart Patrol/Mr. DNA" by Devo (As a spud, I had to throw this one in there.)
"School" and "Negative Creep" by Nirvana (I'm sorry, but no one out there is able to convey as much raw emotion with a guitar as Kurt Cobain was able to.)
"Hound Dog" and "A Big Hunk o' Love" by Elvis Presley (It's all about Scotty Moore's twang.)

We have a winner. Seriously, I don't know why Neil isn't considered one of the greats up there with people like Page.

DITTO on Chicago's "25 Or 6 To 4" !

I think, that one of the most perfectly recorded guitar solos is "Reelin' In The Years" by Steely Dan.

In fact, I can not take a band seriously that has that kind of drumming onslaught all the way through a song. It might as well be a drum "machine". This may a great "Speed Metal" solo.... but many people do not share a love for speed for the sake of speed. I Don't.

But, once again.... the drumming in TTFATF is just tedious from the get go. I much prefer a John Bonham style of less is more drumming.

If you want good Metal with speed, imo Metal Church, and their debut album METAL CHURCH is a great benchmark to judge other works by.
There's a story there, with heart ... & Soul!!

But anytime I've ever thought of Guitar Solo's, I just hear Free Bird. =/

1. Jimmy Page - Achilles Last Stand. Very epic
2. Jimmy Page - Dazed and Confused. Creepy and creative
3. Eddie Van Halen - Eruption. Amazing tapping
4. Jimi Hendrix - Purple Haze. Legendary.
5. Tony Iommi - War Pigs. Tony at his best.

My favorite guitar solo is Molly Hatchet's Flirting With Disaster. But then there's also Lynyrd Skynyrd's Free Bird, Boston's Foreplay/Long Time, Ted Nugent's Stranglehold, Van Halen's Hot For Teacher, and Metallica's Seek and Destroy. Just some of my favorites.

Through the Fire and Flames is a sweet solo, but why it lacks to be on the top of my lists is DragonForce's inability to reproduce it live.

I can't believe I'm the first one to say this.
Comfortably Numb

David Gilmour completely took this song to another level with this solo.

Plus I believe that solos should be judged on the quality of the solos alone and not the rest of the song. TTFATF is probably one of the most overrated songs ever. Just because a song is fast doesn't make it good. I guess Dragonforce is okay, but I'm not into the 100% battles, dragons, flames, wars, etc.

The last one doesn't count, since it's not a solo. I'd probably have to say the second one.

YES. There's a lot of guitar solos that can give me chills, but Comfortably Numb is still at the top of my list. Every time that solo comes on I just crank up the volume, close my eyes, and get lost in the music. It's amazing.

And on the subject of TTFAF...highly overrated song. I enjoy it somewhat, the speed and all is impressive, but there's way better songs and way better solos out there.

I have to agree on Comfortably Numb, can't say best but its definitely up there, of course Free Bird and Stairway are up there too. Some others I enjoy are:

Metallica - Battery
Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody
Ozzy - Mr. Crowley
Dream Theater - Octavarium (the one at the very end)
Avenged Sevenfold - I Won't See You Tonight pt. 1

As far as Dragonforce goes, if you really listen to them they have a lot better solos in other songs, don't just pick the one that you happen to know because its in a videogame. I would say my favorite is from Soldiers of the Wasteland, it has a melodic part in the middle of it that is awesome.

And you know whats even more funny, The Lead Guitarist for Dragonforce is self-taught.

and he does an awesome solo on TTFAT. it looks impossible, but its not (not for him anyway)

Mister_Rogers69
12-31-2007, 01:16 AM
a few i would say are good would be

One - Metallica
Freebird - Lynrd Skynrd
Wish you were here - Pink Floyd
Both of the solos in Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen
Paint it Black by the Rolling Stones while not the most complex solo i love the sound of it
I agree that Voodoo Child by The Jimi Hendrix Experience was also one of the best solos

And will people stop saying Guns and Roses songs! Yes they are a good band but Slash is a kind of over rated guitarist. The only solo that i really think would qualify for this list would be Welcome to the Jungle.

Zeppelin's "Since I've Been Loving You" is the one that comes immediately to mind for me.

I was just about to post this. Any live rendition of Since I've Been Loving You is phenomenal. It's the only guitar solo that really hits me as natural and not contrived. It comes at you like the guitar is trying to say something. It's the kind of solo you can't learn when you perform it, you just feel it.

My thoughts exactly. There is so much emotion in the guitar playing through that entire song - I still get shivers listening to it (and I've been doing that a very, very long time!).

I'm torn between "Superstition" and "Rude Mood," both by Stevie Ray Vaughan. The former is one of my favorite covers of any song, and one of few which is comparable to the original. The solo is exactly why Vaughan is hailed as one of the greatest guitarists out there. It's oozing with soul and technical prowess. My favorite parts of the latter are the numerous guitar fills, and I like the fast tempo the song as a whole maintains.

Well off the top of my head without putting a whole lot of thought into it here's the ones that influenced me as a player the most...

Comfortably Numb - David Gilmour
Stranglehold - Ted Nugent
Beat It - Eddie Van Halen
Estranged - Slash
No More Tears - Zakk Wylde
For The Love of God - Steve Vai
Heartbreaker - Jimmy Page
Black Star - Yngwie J. Malmsteen
Peaches en Regalia and Sexual Harassment In The Workplace - Frank Zappa
The Thrill Is Gone - BB King
Let's Go Crazy - Prince

Little Wing is another good one. The Hendrix one, and I suppose the SRV version gets an honorable mention as well. The true emotion in that solo though, is when Hendrix begins "La La"'ing along.

seriously hate to break it to everyone but herman and sam (guitarists of ttftf) really arent that amazing at guitar. They r def. skilled but seriously they just play extremly fast, but don't do anything too difficult. my opinion of a great guitar solo is probably "While my Guitar Gently Weeps".

dude, there are at least 1000 solos out there that are each brilliant.

By guitar solo, you could want:

1. Just plain lightning fast shred.
2. Emotion oin playng

There are many factors
That being said, you can't have a "greatest" solo

S1ashRev
01-04-2008, 11:09 PM
Where to begin. There is just way too many good guitar solos.

Anything from Slash during GNR era. I always liked "Night Train" but that's just me.(Slash is my favorite guitarist if you couldn't tell)

Jimi Hendrix - Little Wing, Red House, etc., etc., etc.
Stevie Ray Vaughn - Pride and Joy, Lenny, etc., etc., etc.
Joe Perry/Brad Whitford - Many good solos
Eddie Van Halen - Many good solos

And Everybody else that you guys have named. I definitely did not mention all my favorites. There is just way too many.

Everybody has different taste, so this could go on forever. Maybe we should just recognize the greatness of our favorite guitarists.:D

C'mon, opinions aside as far as technical jammin solos, its gotta be Eddie Van Halen's original Eruption, that paved the way for most of the sick ass solos you hear today. Listen to anyone who tries to cover the original, noone can nail it, sad to say but even eddie cant nail it like he did back in the early 80's.

When it comes to fast stuff, "Eruption" - Van Halen can't be beat. But "Comfortably Numb" - Pink Floyd is a nicely written guitar solo and it sounds beautiful. I have to give credit to "Foreplay/Long Time" - Boston for sounding awesome, and also "More Than A Feeling". And pick nearly any Stevie Ray Vaughan song and you've got a great guitar solo.

All very good solos, If I had to pick one, it would probably be Voodoo Chile By Jimi Hendrix, but there is so much criteria for picking the "best" solo plus the fact that its a matter of opinion. Everyones entitled to their opinion, but like many of you have said there is alot more to a good solo then mindless finger flailing, fingerpicking, and uber fast strumming. Such things as insight, creativity and unorthodox playing styles should also be taken into account. Well thats my two cents, thanks for at least reading this.

And about the seeming infatuation with Dragonforces TTFATF they do have other songs, Valley of the Damned would be my favorite, but you should also look into Cry of the Brave and Once in a Lifetime.

I think that the question should be a bit more of...

"Who are your favorite guitar soloists?"

I know that I can't always pick a favorite individual solo, but every time I hear Dimebag Darrell (R.I.P.) start shredding his guitar up, it always gives me the goosebumps. He's not the best by any means, but, he is always fresh.

I'm going to go ahead and drop an old one here, not necessarily the BEST EVER, but still one of my FAVORITES. The solo in Aqualung by Jethro Tull, I love it. Also, anything Frank Zappa has ever done, I mean hell, just listen to the entire Hot Rats album by Frank Zappa and bask in the beauty.

Personally, my favorite guitar solos have come from Buckethead. While I can appreciate the Eruption solo for what it did for guitar playing in general, it isn't one of my favorites. In my opinion Buckethead combines technical proficiency with emotion to create some truly amazing guitar solos. Some of my favorite solos from him are in the songs Soothsayer, Buckethead (done by Colonel Claypool's Bucket of Bernie Brains, one of his side projects), and of course Nottingham Lace.

I think Eric Clapton does some extraordinary work, but I can't think of any song in particular of his that I would suggest as BEST guitar solo ever.

Well, actually the live Crossroads (from Wheels of Fire) is widely discussed as the best. It's really cool how he starts in the major pentatonic -- not that common for a blues tune -- before shifting to the minor pentatonic in the first chorus. It's got drama, it builds, it's very hummable or singable. I'd say it's his best. I prefer stuff that stretches more musically -- other scales, different techniques, etc., but that's not stuff Clapton really does. For his kind of playing, this is about as good as it gets.

For me, the big deal is soloing over challenging changes, making it sound musical and melodic, playing fluid (not choppy), with speed etc. for the music's sake, not for show.

There are a lot of great solos that have these characteristics, but I'm going to single out Larry Carlton's solo over Steely Dan's Kid Charlemagne. Here's the chord changes he plays over --

Dm7 Dm7/C Bm7 E7 Am7 C/G Fmaj7 Em7 Dm7 B7 Em7 D C Em D/E Am7 G F Bb7(add 6) Dm/F G Am C/G Dm Em/G Dm/F Em Am F C/E Dm C7#9

The real challenge is that all these change come really fast -- mostly two to a bar.

And he does all this while playing a solo that has a better melody than the actual song. Beautiful, biting tone. Fluid position shifts. Tricky cross-picking.

This is one of my favorite solos to practice and play.

Dragonforce solo's are not good,
they sound like a video game on acid.

I like solos where you can really feel the guitar

Try listening to Estranged by Guns n Roses, the solo is incredible.
You can really get into the mood of the song and feel the guitar alot more than that Dragonforce crap.

I've always like Stanglehold from Ted Nugent. Not the fastest or really techincal but a 7-8 minute solo that you can listen to over and over.

Interesting Joe Satriani choices. I've always prefered the solos in "Circles", "The Forgotten (Part 2)" and "Ice 9".

Jimmy Page on "Stairway To Heaven". That is the most "sonic" his guitar ever got, and it even owns the end solo of "Free Bird". Enough said. Debate Over. :)

This dude knows what hes talking about ^^. The best solos of all time i would have to say Estranged, November Rain, Mr. Crowley, or Comfortably numb. Their short, but you can feel the essence of teh guitar.

Nice to see 25 or 6 to 4...Terry Kath was incredible. My personal favorite is Tunnel of Love by Dire Straits (Knopfler) the outro solo in that song is techincally brilliant and very moving. IMO, Mark Knopfler's finest effort with Dire Straits.

My favorites:

Free Bird - Lynyrd Skynyrd

When My Guitar Gently Weeps - The Beatles (with Eric Clapton)

Donīt Fear the Reaper - Blue Oyster Cult (is short... but is frenetic, tremendous... i swear that it sounds that if the guitar is going to break in pieces before the relaxing tune of the rest of the song).

Eruption - Van Halen (for long the best pretext to call this song "The Perfect Guitar Solo song" and maybe one of the most wanted songs in GH.... in Rock Band is useless because only the guitar is there...)

The one that give me chills for the way that the guitar, literally, cries is

Gary Moore - I Still Got the Blues for You... this ending guitar solo sounds great... sadly...

selkies: the endless obsession- between the buried and me

NOICE!!!!!

some of my favorites are...

-"the dagger" off of the Roadrunner United Album
-"cold" by At the Gates (the two second electronic sounding bit is AWESOME imo)
-whatever the name of the tune is in the episode of Metalocalypse where Skwisgar has his guitar teaching special, the solo he plays in the first minute
-"Crazy Train"
-"Cemetery Gates"
-"Skinwalkers" by Himsa, simple yet gets to ya...my buddy wrote a solo for a song we wrote that kinda sounds like this solo and i've always loved it haha.

just a few favorites, i could go on and on and on

It's not about kick ass speed, or how hard they thrash. It's about soul, timing, and overall feel of the solo.

David Gilmour (Pink Floyd) - "Comfortably Numb" solo. It rides out the song for about two minutes... he is a solo god.

Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin) - "Since I Been Loving You" & "Achilles Last Stand" solos. He is the BEST all-around guitarist EVER in my opinion.

Jimi Hendrix - "All Along The Watchtower" solo. So original... there will never be another guitarist like Jimi ever again.

If you have not heard these... take the time to listen

Here's a couple of other solo's/pices I think are among the all time greats. Man I love this thread. I've heard so much good stuff in this one!

Frank Zappa - Watermelon In Easter Hay I think this is just beautiful and filled with emotion.
<object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/kBQPkLuwy80&hl=en"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/kBQPkLuwy80&hl=en" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object>

And two from a player I've always found under rated. Mick Mars of Motley Crue. Laugh, flame, say what you will but I think Ted Nugent summed it up best. "Mick Mars is hands down the most under rated crank rock n' roll guitar player there is." These are two instrumental pieces that I think showcase his playing very well. Really hope he gets around to doing the blues album he's always wanted to do before his disease takes his hands away from him or worse finally kills him. :(

Fogey I hope you see this as I'd really like to hear your thoughts on the second song especially. I think both are great, the first was the first solo I ever learned, but I think the 2nd may be more your style.

Mick Mars - God Bless The Children of the Beast from Shout At The Devil

Mick Mars - Bittersuite from Quarternary

Awsome vid. I like Zappas style. More expiremental than Duane. Although right now my favorite solos is this one. Also when was that it looks like Zappa was tapping part of the solo.

Nothing will ever beat Fade to Black.
I once thought the last solo to Fade To Black was the greatest thing since sliced bread. Such a great climax in that solo, one you can only compare it to with sex! hahahaha. I had posted this a long time ago but Floods came around and the only thing better than that is sliced bread(Not really).

Don't know about greatest, but Buddy Whittington can flat out play. He's been Mayall's guitarist for quite a while now.

The live version off A Rock N' Roll Collection Is amazing. its 10:46 long! more epic than free bird. Being able to switch back and forth between slide and shread is unbelivable. I used to listend to it all the time while running

That was from a concert in 1985 and yes he was doing some tapping there. I'm not sure when Frank first began tapping but it goes back to sometime in the early 70's. I saw an interview with Steve Vai one time and tapping, Eddie Van Halen and Frank came up in the interview somehow. Steve said something along the lines of "Eddie didn't invent tapping, he perfected and popularized it. Frank was doing tapping back in the early 70's at shows I saw. I'm not saying Frank invented it mind you but he was doing it at least as far back as then."

Gotta go with "Red House" live at the Isle of Wight by Jimi Hendrix. You can really hear his majesty in that version.
