(Old One can be deleted)
With the upcoming release of 'Band Hero' -- the full-band video game that expands upon what you can do in 'Guitar Hero' -- Activision is revealing the full list of playable songs. The tracks span decades in genres, ranging from David Bowie and Devo to Taylor Swift and Janet Jackson.
Players can play guitar, bass, and drums or sing over the 65 songs that are included on the Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and Nintendo's Wii, or play 30 songs on the Nintendo DS Lite. As with Guitar Hero 5, there are maybe five songs I'd like to see in Rock Band, and there's no way I'd pick it up brand new.
Interesting that the DS game has a different song list than the console one.

I'm with Kev on this one. Only five songs on the setlist that I like (not counting the ones that are already in RB).
Then again, I do realize I'm not exactly part of the target demographic for a pop-centric game.

I'm digging about the same number of songs from Band Hero as Lego: RB. Probably won't be picking up either.

10-16-2009, 06:34 PM
I like how if you count Lego RB songs, there's already 15 songs available in the main 65 song set list.
Worse than that...out of 30 in the ds setlist, there's ANOTHER 15 already available in RB. That's HALF of the setlist.
Obviously, they figured GH fans don't play RB or something. :p
Edit: And yes I'm aware that Lego comes out the same day as Band Hero, so it's not available "first" on RB. But, Lego is also 100% exportable...which Band Hero likely isn't...so, I'm referring to the Rock Band platform availability.

i'd like to see those in RB...
i honestly didn't have much in the way of expectations for this or lego: RB, but i wouldn't have guessed i'd only be interested in about 12 songs from each game.
hell, even a lot of these picks would be weak considering the band (honky tonk woman, whip it, every rose, etc.)...

There's maybe ten songs that I would pay for as DLC. But considering this is a GH game with a coat of bubble gum paint, I wouldn't even buy it for $20. I tried to like GHWT and GH5, I really did. But RB just has it beat six ways from Sunday in my opinion.
As for LRB, unless there's a way to delete individual songs after the export, I don't know that I will get that either, unless and until it comes way down in price.

I only *really* like 20 songs from Lego: Rock Band (if I count the songs I could take or leave there would be 24)
In Band Hero there are 23 songs I am really into. Whether they were RB DLC or in L:RB is besides the point. 5 Lane, Open Bass Note, Challenging Vocals (debatable plus)
I'm getting both games but one thing can be said for Band Hero. It has Online.

really not a lot of songs that I would like, some I'll admit I've never heard...but a pretty good chunk of those I despise (Taylor Swift for example...no offense to fans).

How the crap did Hands Down make the cut?
The words are hushed lets not get busted;
just lay entwined here, undiscovered.
Safe in here from all the stupid questions.
"hey did you get some?"
Man, that is so dumb.
Stay quiet, stay near, stay close they can't hear...
so we can get some.
My hopes are so high that your kiss might kill me.
So won't you kill me, so I die happy.
My heart is yours to fill or burst,
to break or bury, or wear as jewelery,
which ever you prefer.

I'm sorry, but it is. They've gone in the direction that Within Temptation took before them and went for a dumbed down, softer, poppy sound for mass market appeal (that and they really need to cut down on the male vocals, because Andrea simply isn't that good of a singer). Perfectly valid choice, but that does put them on the bottom of the list of female fronted metal bands that I personally enjoy listening to.

I know my opinion is going to be in the minority here, but that is a couple of amazing setlists. Too bad I'm way too far invested in RB to make a purchase on a good conscience.
Of course, Rock Band already has many of the songs... but we're missing most of my favorites. Band Hero, by the looks of it, has my personal favorite music game setlist ever, by far. Even the stupid DS version beats RB or RB2 for me.

Your list has maybe all the songs that would absolutely suck for a band, but I loathe that we still don't have them. I really like Culture Club, but that song isn't too great for the game. Maybe Karma Chameleon but oh well, whatever Nevervision decides...

I looked up Rockstar by N*E*R*D because I knew they had a song called Lapdance, so I wanted to see if it was kid-friendly - sure enough, the very first line is 'f***ing posers'. Erm, okay
Also, I have to question Call Me When You're Sober as a kid's song as well

I wonder if they'll censor "Bad Reputation"? My guess is yes, but I suppose it might get by. I'm not quite sure if numerous instances of "damn" would push it up to a T rating or if that's acceptable for E10.
If they do censor it, that's incredibly lame and completely ruins the point of the song.

A lot of negative nellies on this one. I count 26 out of 65 that I like (about 6-7 more than LRB). A good chunk of those I'd put up there as songs I'd look forward to seeing in RB: Tonic, Big Country, David Bowie, Devo, Poison, Marvin Gaye, Styx, Go-Gos, Everclear (the only song I like) and Don McLean stand out. Of course there's a good chunk already featured as DLC or LRB songs in that 26. As someone stated earlier, I'm only interested in picking up LRB if I can delete the garbage I have no interest in. I'm just oddly attracted to BH more so tha LRB, Sacrilege in these parts, I know. It's like Neversoft and Harmonix came up with 2 lukewarm games and added a couple of my favorite songs to try and sucker me in. I guess I'll just wait for the dust to settle and end up going with LRB just because RB2 is the better platform to play on.

The entire setlist just looks like songs that would appear in a regular Guitar Hero game. Also, could someone explain the name to me? It's called "Band Hero" and yet, Guitar Hero: World Tour was Activision's first band game.
To me, this game feels like Activision got wind of Rock Band: Lego and just decided to make a game marketed towards a younger audience so that they wouldn't miss out on that demographic, even though Rock Band: Lego isn't trying to appeal to just one demographic. Sure. All the songs in both games are family friendly but, Rock Band: Lego doesn't have three songs by Taylor Swift.

Why does the DS setlist have so many repeats from other games?
Because those games are not on the DS. Gives DS owners with out consoles a chance to play those songs..
:/
Really? I mean REEEAALLY?!
That is just sad, and I'm not talking about the setlist either. Are you meaning to tell me that Aly & AJ, Jesse McCartney, Hilary Duff and Finger Eleven aren't has-beens?

I have mixed feelings about this... I love some songs there but I'm no way buying that crappy game. I'm crossing my fingers that RB gets them in the next 6 months or so. I do feel jealous that they are getting hair metal :( (every rose has it's thorns).

the "RB will get it eventually" argument doesn't hold much water unfortunately
I remember checking this before I went and bought GH5. Only something like 10% of the songs I wanted from GH had come to RB.
Also, for those thinking this won't sell well I'd like to mention that Guitar Hero's #1 best seller for DLC is the Travis Barker remix of "Low" by Flo Rida

Evanescence (I know they have the same song on RB2, but my internet is down so I can't download. T_T), F.O.B., Yellowcard, and a lot more bands that I like. I don't know why either, but I love Taylor Swift. In the demo the charting for the song "Picture to Burn" actually looked challenging and fun. This game is an instant buy for me.

You know, I've been looking over both the setlist to Band Hero and Lego Rock Band, and they both have some killer songs. I do think Band Hero has more songs I won't enjoy playing, though... Taylor Swift, Jesse McCartney, etc. Not that I hate these songs, but I can't see myself dying to play them.
I notice they come out the same week. Aw, I wish they wouldn't do that. I think, since I overall prefer Rock Bands gameplay (only slightly... as far as I'm concerned, there is no difference to the guitar gameplay, but I find the drums and vocals more fun on RB), I'll get that one first and buy Band Hero later in the month. Nice to see imports for both of them, though.

Well, someone on Wikipedia put up a 3-pack with Ashlee Simpson's "Pieces of Me," Hilary Duff's "Fly," and the Jackson 5's "I Want You Back." There's no source, so don't expect it to stay there for long and take it with a grain of salt or less. Could be there to fill the blank week of Guitar Hero DLC, as far as I know, since nothing's been announced for Nov. 5.

It definitely looks like hard difficulty, because judging what they chose to chart, it ought to be a lot more intricate. Just reading about the Gwen Stefani and No Doubt lawsuit against Band Hero. This is getting to be a regular occurrence with artists now.
Even though I love the Guitar Hero games, I personally side with the artists on that one. Sure, I think they should lighten up, but I can understand how they feel betrayed. Plus, putting yourself in Gwen Stefani's shoes, I can't imagine she would enjoy seeing a virtual represenation of herself singing The Rolling Stones.
Don't even get me started on Kurt Cobain singing Taylor Swift
Doesn't effect me too much, since I'm boring and only use real artists with their songs :)

Hmm I might jump over to BH...
2 Minutes to Midnight - Have it in RB...uncensored but no sing-along.
All Along the Watchtower - Would be missed.
Dancing with Myself - Available for RB.
Du Hast - Would be missed.
Feel Good Inc. - Don't care, just wanted to comment I'm suprised this is one not transfering since they have it for DJ Hero too.
Nearly Lost You - Already in RB.
Play That Funky Music - Would be missed and suprised it's gone cause of DJ Hero.
Plug In Baby - Either way but if your band member is in the game your song should transfer.
Song 2 - Will probably have in RB. Haven't been able to get either game yet!
Under Pressure - Will be missed. Yes it's available in RB but RB doesn't have the epic sing-along. On the other hand I can actually sing it in RB and there's not enough open bass notes to balance that out in GH.
...suppose I should play it first before deciding. If the character creator and outfits and stuff are better I might trade-in GH 5. Not having the graveyard would suck but that tree place looks pretty sweet. Besides if they ever get Smoke on the Water over from SH that'd be epic as BH has a Montreux stage.

I think some of the blame in this should go to the artist's management, there was already a precedent with the Hendrix estate wanting restrictions in World Tour, all it would have taken is little research beforehand and this would have been a non-issue.

Kotaku has posted an article about the song edits in Band Hero. I guess they really wanted it to be 'family friendly'
From Sugar We're Going Down:
Original Lyric: "I'm just a notch in your bedpost, but you're just a line in a song"
Band Hero Lyric: "I'm just a notch...but you're just a line in a song"
Original Lyric: "Oh don't mind me I'm watching you two from the closet, wishing to be the friction in your jeans"
Band Hero Lyric: "Oh don't mind me I'm watching you two from the closet, wishing to be the friction"
And A Million Ways
Original Lyric: "one last eighty proof, slouchin' in the corner booth"
Band Hero Lyric: "slouchin' in the corner booth"

Before I go through thoughts on each song I'd like to say I love these venues, especially Club La Noza (I'm sure I've requested that EXACT thing for RB in the suggestion topic or in a topic about venues) and Summer Park Festival. I exported the songs before playing so am sticking to GH 5 anyway. Sadly the sing-a-longs didn't transfer with the songs. Might get this when it's down in price in like March and then keep it until GH 6.
Vox still suck for some reason. I'll have to inquire about that. Everything else is the usual.
- 3 Doors Down, 'When I'm Gone' - Suprisingly nice solo on guitar. Solid song. 3/5
- The Airborne Toxic Event, 'Gasoline' - Lyrics sound like a mix of emo and indie so ewwwwwwwww. Catchy and fun guitar riff though so it's not entirely worthless. 1/5
- The All American Rejects, 'Dirty Little Secret' - It's not horrible. Not very good either. Didn't buy it in RB so had never played it. 2.5/5
- Alphabeat, 'Fascination' - I thought this was an entirely different song. I looked it up and the one I was thinking of is by The Human League. Again not horrible but not good either. 2.5/5
- Aly and AJ, 'Like Whoa' - Like, whoa it totally didn't suck. I only played it on bass though, might suck on guitar but bass was decent. 2.5/5
- Angels & Airwaves, 'The Adventure' - Another big meh. 2.5/5
- Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals, 'Steal My Kisses ' - See last comment. 2.5/5
- Big Country, 'In a Big Country' - Hey it's allllrrriiggghhhttt. 3/5
- The Bravery, 'Believe' - I'm pretty sure I haven't heard this song before the game despite all it's been used in but it was above average. 3.5/5
- Carl Douglas, 'Kung Fu Fighting' - Love it,especially with Quincy Styles in his 4th outfit with the kung fu moves. Hilarious. 5/5
- Cheap Trick, 'I Want You to Want Me (live)' - One of the funnest songs in any rhythm game. Even if it's not from Budokan it still kicks ass. 10/5 (It gets the extra 5 HMX didn't get for putting that Hello There crap in RB 2 instead of this)
- Cold War Kids, 'Hang Me Up to Dry' - Pretty average. 3/5
- Corinne Bailey Rae, 'Put Your Records On' - I kinda liked this when I played it in KRAI,still kinda like it. 3/5
- Counting Crows, 'Angels of the Silences' - Average stuff here. 3/5
- Culture Club, 'Do You Really Want to Hurt Me' - Good cheesy fun! Camp value and all that. Plus it's a decent song anyway. 4/5
- Dashboard Confessional, 'Hands Down' - Below average but not horrid. 2/5
- David Bowie, 'Let's Dance' - Really good song but not Bowie's best. Though there's many songs I'd take it over. 4.5/5
- Devo , 'Whip It' - Much like Culture Club lovely for the cheese and camp value. Much like Cheap Trick also bonus points for not putting in one of their crap songs instead. 6/5 (4 for the song + 2 bonus)
- Don McLean, 'American Pie' - Despite the censoring of whiskey it's still epic and the best final song since Freebird. Great sing-a-long too. Oddly enough the crowd seems to say whiskey. 5/5
- Duffy, 'Warwick Avenue' - Below average but not horrible. 2/5
- Duran Duran, 'Rio' - Average. 3/5
- Evanescence, 'Bring Me to Life' - Already have it in RB but at the same time they did it better as the guitarist will actually sing the guy parts instead of no one. 4/5
- Everclear, 'Santa Monica (Watch the World Die)' - Good. Not the Everclear song I'm familar with but I liked it anyway. Despite the relaxed enviorment and poppyness a lot of these songs are actually kinda depressing. 4/5
- Fall Out Boy, 'Sugar, We're Goin' Down' - I hate Fall Out Boy. That makes the fact this was actually really, really fun even more unbelieveable. Epic sing-a-long bumps it up a bit too. I also finally know what he's on about in this. I don't understand why they get to say "loaded gun complex" but "like bullets from a gun" and "a solider and his gun" have gun censored in those other songs. 4/5
- Filter, 'Take a Picture' - Filter's bassist hates me. Now Filter's guitarist hates me too. The song is only ok but the ridiculous charts knock this one down from the 3.5 it should be. 2.5/5
- Finger Eleven, 'Paralyzer' - I'm a pretty big fan of theirs. This is one of their worst songs from their worst album but it's still damn good. I understand it's the popular one in the US but would've loved anything from Grayest of Blue Skies though not quite family friendly. 4/5
- The Go-Go's, 'Our Lips Are Sealed' - Camp value and not much else. 2.5/5
- Hilary Duff, 'So Yesterday' - I remember suprisingly not hating it but don't remember liking it. 2/5
- Hinder, 'Lips Of An Angel' - Quite average. 3/5
- Jackson 5, 'ABC' - Catchyness and more camp value. Never got it in RB. 3/5
- Janet Jackson, 'Black Cat' - I had Taylor Swift sing this. It was amusing. 2/5
- Jesse McCartney, 'Beautiful Soul' - I hate this song. It had no play value either. First truly horrible song with no redeeming feature in this game. On the brightside it doesn't transfer. 0/5
- Joan Jett, 'Bad Reputation' - Loses a point for being a RB repeat. 3/5
- Joss Stone, 'You Had Me' - This was average but the censor job really messes it up. 2/5
- Katrina and The Waves, 'Walking on Sunshine' - Again camp value, nothing else. 2/5
- The Kooks, 'Naïve' - Meh. 2/5
- KT Tunstall, 'Black Horse and the Cherry Tree' - Never heard of her before this. Loved it. I gotta learn that dance the singer does, that's awesome. :p Entirely lacking on bass however,Polly on drums equalivilent,42 notes on expert. Not really sure what she's going on about with the lyrics but it's catchy anyway. 4.5/5
- The Last Goodnight, 'Pictures of You' - Average song but it was pretty fun to play. 3.5/5
- Lily Allen, 'Take What You Take' - I just don't like this chick but it's ok. 2.5/5
- Maroon 5, 'She Will Be Loved' - Meh. 2.5/5
- Marvin Gaye, 'I Heard It Through the Grapevine' - I like this song. It's good to have something different. That crap towards the end knocks off .5 though. 3/5
- Mighty Mighty Bosstones, 'The Impression That I Get' - Epically awesome. Sing-a-long included for more epicness. I thought it'd just be good fun and it turned out to be epic. Also gets the extra points HMX should've but they decided on awful playing Where Did You Go instead of this. 10/5
- Nelly Furtado, 'Turn Off the Light' - I like 2 of her songs. This happens to be one of them. The other is the reggae remix of Say It Right. 4/5
- N.E.R.D., 'Rockstar' - I like this song and while I don't normally play drums I gave it a go on this and it's one of the more fun drum songs I've played so that negates the not so great guitar. They also get to say "my 4-4 pops far" while gun still isn't ok. 4/5
- No Doubt, 'Just a Girl' - Already have it in RB. Having No Doubt doesn't really help it. 3.5/5 Losing half a point for repeat.
- No Doubt, 'Don't Speak' - Meh. 2.5/5
- OK Go, 'A Million Ways' - Big meh. 2/5
- Papa Roach, 'Lifeline' - This song is awful and it's a mess to play. The only other song in the game that's worthless. 0/5
- Parachute, 'Back Again' - Catchy above average fun. 3.5/5
- Pat Benatar, 'Love Is a Battlefield' - Good, catchy and camp value. 4/5
- Poison, 'Every Rose Has Its Thorn' - Sorry hair metal RB guys but this one is supremely epic. 5/5
- Robbie Williams and Kylie Minogue, 'Kids' - Meh. 2/5
- The Rolling Stones, 'Honky Tonk Women' - More Stones is never bad. Unless your HMX apprently. They must think it's bad because we never got any after RB 1. :( This song is awesome though. 5/5
- Roy Orbison, 'Oh Pretty Woman' - RB repeat. 3/5
- Santigold, 'L.E.S. Artistes' - I thought this was Nelly Furtado under a different name. :p It's ok. 3/5
- Snow Patrol, 'Take Back the City' - I don't remember this at all. 2.5/5
- Spice Girls, 'Wannabe' - More camp value. 1.5/5
- Styx , 'Mr. Roboto' - Does Styx always have to throw some random crazy twist in at the end of their songs? Decent stuff anyway. 3.5/5
- Taylor Swift, 'Love Story' - This reminded me of Goodbye Horses for some reason. Pretty average. 3/5
- Taylor Swift, 'Picture to Burn' - Average overall but the chorus is really catchy and fun so it gets extra. 3.5/5
- Taylor Swift, 'You Belong With Me' - This one was below average. 2.5/5
- Tonic, 'If You Could Only See' - Average popness. 3/5
- The Turtles, 'Happy Together' - Average song but came off creepy as all hell in the game especially with the sing-a-long so loses a point and thank goodness my guitarist was female or my head might've exploded. 2/5
- Village People, 'YMCA' - Camp at it's best plus the singer does the dance so it's a win. 5/5
- Yellowcard , 'Ocean Avenue' - More fun than I thought it'd be and that can be said for a lot of songs in this game. 3.5/5

For those that doubt Beautiful Soul. Play it on drums xD
Also gotta ask how Black Cat deserves 2/5

b) Vernon Reid is on Guitar

Band Hero has a lot of my favorite songs, but it has a lot of crap on it too. LRB has a setlist where I like 90% of the songs on the disc. Both have exportability, but LRB is 100% and BH can export most of the songs (but not Mr Roboto) so overall I like LRB better.

Good luck with that.
There's a note saying celebs are locked to on disc songs.
I got around it apprently but I don't know what the heck I did.
Oh, that's interesting. Post Cobain/GH5 snafu, I take it
But if that's the case, then why did No Doubt have such a similar problem with their avatars singing other artists' songs?

I thought the celebs were unlockable? In any event thanks for the Setlist Review on the last page. I'm kind of regretting my choice of LRB over BH. The majority of LRB is stuff I never want to hear again much less export into RB2. Your take on each of the BH songs makes it look like a lot of average and meh songs, but only a couple of stinkers. I'm holding out for a price drop by March and my GH5 $5 off coupon to boot. I'd consider the unethical rent-and-rip, but I'm actually interested enough to see the mo-caps that BH may be a purchase.
Ghostbusters, I Want You Back (family favorite), & Fire are making me buy it. Though the crap-fest that is the Wii version downgraded it to a rent.
Wait until you've played Ghostbusters like 3 or 4 times in the beginning of the game and you'll realize that LRB is not a "buy for just one song" type of game. It's an OK family game, but repetitive in a bad way.

They can still sing the on disc songs by other artists and like I said,I got around it somehow. It IS gender locked regardless so you can't have Gwen sing Y.M.C.A.

They are unlockable, just only for stuff that's there already. No DLC/exported stuff unless you do whatever I did.
I'm not liking the stuff in LRB I didn't know either. Mostly awful so far.
The mo-cap stuff transfers. Unless you're talking about different mo-cap stuff. The singer does the same dances and all that.

One question, for those on Wii who got the new drums: Is there a MIDI port? If not, this is another loss from WT, just as bad as the missing facial hair.
Google was no help to me here.
I believe they all have the midi port now

Off-Topic: Admittedly, this. Not that it's bad, but it's so annoying. Though, to be honest, I never want to hear All-American Rejects again for the rest of my life.

Yes, the Band Hero drum kit has a detachable control pod with a MIDI in & out on it (good news for those who don't want to connect it directly into the kit).

Band Hero has a lot of my favorite songs, but it has a lot of crap on it too. LRB has a setlist where I like 90% of the songs on the disc. Both have exportability, but LRB is 100% and BH can export most of the songs (but not Mr Roboto) so overall I like LRB better.
For Wii, no export for LRB, so Band Hero wins for that (I'll just get the manual & import).
