What do you mean it won't recognize the guitar? A little more info please. Do you mean that:
1) The guitar won't sync up with the dongle?
2) The guitar won't navigate through the menus
3) You want to play guitar but the game says something about a microphone - or it won't let you play guitar, only microphone
Since we aren't there, you need to tell us what is going on.
Also, if your system doesn't need the update, it won't pull it up. It's kinda like installing a game on the PC that comes with DX8 or something, it won't install an older version of DX over your current version.

Sorry this is pretty new to me but i will explain further. The guitar wont sync to the system and when i go into the game it only lets me navigate through the dongle and not the guitar and brings up how to use the microphone!!
I need to know how to get the system to recognise the guitar??
Any advice would be appreciated..:)

It sounds like you are using the wii mote.
You have to: sync the dongle to the guitar
(by pressing the button on the dongle and the
sync button on the guitar simultaneously) THEN
use the button on the GUITAR to navigate the
menus NOT the buttons on the wiimote. If you
use the wiimote to navigate (say, to quick play)
it assumes that you are going to sing, and that
you need a microphone. If you navigate
(to quickplay) with the buttons on the guitar, the
game knows you are going to play guitar.
Hope this helps.

Yes, you seem to be confused by some terms.
Dongle: The USB device that connects to the back of the Wii. It is a little square thing, with a single button and a light. Some of them may have a connection for another USB device to connect to it. (I use the GH equipment, so I'm not familiar with what comes with RB2 for the Wii, just RB1)
WiiMote: The controller, wand, whatever you want to call it, it controls the Wii, play most games with it, etc...
When you start the game, when it comes up to the menu, the dongle and the guitar should sync up. At that point, put DOWN the wii-mote, and use the strum bar and fret buttons on the guitar to navigate through the menus. If you are using the WiiMote to navigate the menus then the game is going to assume that you are going to be singing because the WiiMote is for the singers character. If you want to play guitar, use the guitar to navigate the menus. If you want to drum, then use the drums to navigate the menus.
