I personally like music games to have a story line, like GH3 and 4 and GHA, and GHM. I dont like how RB and RB2, and all those other games just throw you into the game.

Whats everybody elses thoughts?

Do not care about the story.

I thought the story bits in GH3 were cute, but after that I started to skip them in all the GH games just to get to the gameplay.

Nope, don't care for them. Let me play my music.

I agree that its about the music, but I just think it gets me more into the game if i know why im playing.

I would just rather play the game.

The story modes in GH are pretty terrible and add nothing to the game.

I'll let you know if the LEGO story turns out awesome

I kind of prefer the "write your own story" style that Rock Band's World Tour modes have. You start out small time and work your way to big arenas, eventually getting inducted into the Rolling Stone Rock Immortals.

Hmm in a game like Rock Band or GH I don't like it, I just want to enjoy the music. In a game specifically designed around it utilizing original compositions, that I would like to see. I have actually had an idea for a while to create a game which is a rhythm/RPG hybrid which I think could be super fun but, unfortunately, not being in the game industry or having any way of making it myself obviously makes my ideas in this vein worthless. But if somebody did make something like this I would totally buy it.

Yeah, this. More open ended than GH3 but with more direction than RB2.

tbh, thats like, perfect, really. harmonix needs to add a little gh3, bt not so much that people get bored of the rpg stylings.

really good idea though, baanu+beckett.

I like that idea too.
I just would like to see how HMX pulls it off.

It does sound pretty cool, but don't mistake my idea. The game I am thinking of would have very little in common with RB/GH except for the playing notes on a plastic instrument part. It wouldn't (probably) use licensed tracks (or if so not popular rock music) and the songs wouldn't be a goal unto themselves, they would be the manner in which you accomplished things in game E.G. enabling your character/s to fight battles and such. It would be an RPG, complete with large scale plotlines, that utilized rhythm elements as the game mechanics, not a rhythm game that had RPG elements tacked on.

Yes, but only if it's done "right". The lolzy story from GHIII was great, the others were pretty eh.

I think a loose story that featured cutscenes with our custom characters would be awesome. I love the loading screens with my characters, and I think animated cutscenes (the characters don't talk, because that would break the suspension of disbelief that they can sing every song in the game) with them would be very awesome and make me care even more about my virtual band.

I love that idea. The personality and position in the band would affect the reactions. Hopefully they'd also make the actions you characters do in the regular game match better too. Or maybe the option to disable some (drummers singing scare me).

While we're on this, has anyone seen their drummer do something crazy during right after the first solo in Peace Sells? Mine went and hide behind the floor tom a couple of times and was looking at the camera with look on her face saying "Go away!".

I really couldn't care less about music game storylines. I never pay attention to them anyway. It would be more convenient for me personally if they weren't even there at all.

On the one hand, I say no way. I don't want some cheeseball story mucking up my rhythm game. On the other hand, seeing the wicked humor of the HMX staff expose itself in a storyline is an intriguing prospect.

I enjoy the World Tour of RB2. Smaller venues -> Bigger venues. You can make up whatever story you want along the way. Sometimes it's fun to play pretend.

Also the stories I've encountered in GH3 and GHM were just silly and I pretty quickly got to the point where I just skipped them so I could play the songs.

It would be nice if there was a little more roleplaying though. The greatest parts of KotOR and games like those are choosing what to do. Do I kill him? Or do just rob him? Or do I give him some credits in hopes of getting him back on his feet?

Similarly, do I charge a ton for the concert? Do give my latest album away for free? Do I license my music to an amazing developer and reap the benefits of increased album sales?

There should be some sort of timeline, from November 2010 up until your songs are being playing on the oldies stations. Go month by month. After you release an album you can make money from it on a monthly basis. You can only play so many concerts a month. Things like that.

That's intriguing, but unnecessary in my eyes. I think as a specific mode separate from World Tour (or a subsection of it or whatever) this would be perfect.

The only complication I can see would be they would have to rework the characters to get some sort of aging mechanism in there. And you'd have to come up with different animations for old rockers. Not the biggest obstacle but definitely something to be considered. Aging your characters believably might be somewhat tricky given that they took a very statuesque route in stylizing the character options.

I guess for the aging they could just make x personality with y feature turn into z feature after n years.

It would be nice if it was separate. Modes for RB3 should be quickplay, score attack, World Tour, (this new tour).

I don't know if they need to age over time. they could just stay the same, because they ARE rock immortals! :D

You should gain fans and noteriety, but lose money, and have you manager give you grief for two weeks because he had to deal with the label because they had to pay for the damages the result from playing the "Trash Your Hotel Room" mini-game. Bonus fans for getting the TV out the window.

Well I think it's important they age if they're going to go through releasing your first album and having a top 40 single, to being respected legends with a solid spot on every classic rock radio station.

Because in Rockband you make the story.
Instead of pretending to be part of a fictional story, the band is you.

Hated them, of course they probably had more appeal to younger audiences who don't buy the game so much for the music, but because it's the newest game all there friends are playing. The stories were never really stories imo, just cutscenes with decent animation at best. I prefer the presentation of the beatles the most, wasn't really a story, but a timeline of events. And all of the unlockable footage was much better than a story imo. If they could work a story into the gameplay somehow it might be alright, but none of this following satan around or whatever story happens to be in the latest GH, it should be a realistic storyline, if it were robert johnson selling his soul other than some made up characters I would dig it. A nirvana storyline would be the worst ending to a game ever lol.

I actually like that. It really is fitting to have the drummer do the verses on Clint Eastwood when it's an evil character.

It works there but when my drummer is singing along to a song when she should be playing some really complicated song it bugs me.
