What happens if the song you want to sing was sung by the opposite sex? Will there be a feature that you could switch from boy to girl or girl to boy?

Well as long as the vocals sings in tune and in key, I would assume that it doesn't matter what the gender is.
I'm not sure how this is going to work, but on singstar it picks up pitch/key/whatever CHANGES. so u dont need to be on the same level as the original singer, but when their pitch goes down, yours has to go down, when theirs goes up yours has to go up, so u can be constantly high or lower, as long as your still kinda in tune with the changes.... if any of that makes sense

As Nick and Rainer have said, the game will undoubtedly adjust itself to your voice's pitch, and use that as a reference point for all your singing.

As far as on-screen avatars go, I get the impression that players will be allowed to either create a custom character (which would make a good deal of sense, given the massive, global scale of this project (here's looking at you, Harmonix)), or, a la Guitar Hero, there'll be characters and costumes to choose from.

I've said it once, and I'll say it again:

This game sounds pretty perfect to take advantage of what Playstation Home has to offer. How cool would it be to use your 'Home' character as your musician?

oh man, create a character would be sick. I don't know about using the home character though.. the style will most likely be much different if it looks anything remotely like guitar hero's characters
Yeah I guess you're right. Not sure if I'd want a Sim looking avatar playing Rock Band. However, hopefully EA will provide Home users with Rock Band attire and stuff?
With Home you could have concerts in your Home, literally. Also, imagine using your Mii on Wii :P As for girl/boy singing, boys generally sing one octave below girls, and as long as it's in key it's not a problem.
you have to be hitting the same note, but you can be in a different octave. if you have to sing a B then you can sing a high B or a low B but it has to be a B
