NOTE: This list is by no means final OR official until we hear anything from HMX. This list has already been updated at least once since this thread was created.

So really, let's not turn this thread into a huge complaint about what songs are/aren't on the list. At least not until we get more information on the approval process and an actual release date for the game.

What we need to do is scan for unreleased downloadable songs!

Go, go, go!

I don't think there are any. Sorting the list by release date, "No Time" is the newest. So unless they snuck in some stuff a while ago and just now are turning it on...

But man scanning the list I see songs from Screaming for Vengeance, Alice Cooper, The Cars...

It's a good list.

What you're looking at is probably the DLC (so far) that's been approved for the "family filter" to transfer to LRB.

Looks like cherry-picking, basically

Most surprising additions, to me are Red Devil, the entire All That Remains pack, My Curse, Bloodstone, and Charlene. There's about a total of like 10 metal songs

EDIT: Also, Something In the Way got it, so they must not show album art in the game

The LEGO Rock Band page but I get the feeling somebody will be kind enough to go through ALL of it.

Got too much time in my hands: I checked everything. Nothing new at all. I think most of these songs wouldn't be very fun for kids, even if the lyrics aren't questionnable.

It's interesting that they took the censoring into consideration, I'll use the Foo Fighters as an example because I know their songs off hand. All of The Colour and the Shape is included except for Monkey Wrench and My Poor Brain, because even though they're censored, the swearing is extremely obvious from the context. I was wondering about exactly this the other day.

I don't think this is the final list either.

I didn't add artists, because I was just going one by one off the page and I figure if you know the song you know who it's from.

Also, I really doubt this is complete, because of one glaring omission: Spongebob's "Best Day Ever".

I'll add this to the first post as well.

Edit: Did I seriously just get Ninja'd??? Oh man I just wasted a lot of time.

Some of this list is baffling - both by inclusion and omission. Just from the top of the list... What was bad about "Blue Sky" or the Nick-produced "Body I Occupy"? And by that rule... what was so E rated about "Bathwater", and "Call Me"?

Just... I'm stunned by some of these. This can't be the final list.

EDIT: Crackity Jones?? Really? That songs scares the hell out of me and I'm in my twenties. Is that really on the kid-friendly list?

T-Hybrid
10-27-2009, 10:32 AM
I think this list (however complete it may or may not be) is already evidence enough that LEGO isn't just an attempt to "dumb down" RB.

Watching a minifig shread to Red Devil is going to be awesome.

T-Hybrid
10-27-2009, 10:33 AM
What was bad about "Ashes to Fire"? "Blue Sky"?
"Ashes to Fire" was never released as a song in the store. It's only available through the RB2 20 pack.

Also, can we avoid revving up the Forum Hype Machine about why some songs were omitted. We don't even know if this is final...or WHO gets the final approval.

"Call Me" may be a little heavy on the innuendo, but I can't find anything objectionable about "Bathwater"....

I'm more concerned with "Sprode," of all things:

throw your undies on the stage
...no wait, you're underage

Ho-kay.

Megadeth in LEGO:RB? Forgive me, but since when is Megadeth "family-friendly"?

Constant Motion Lego-style?!?!

Sorry to the little kids who try to play that on expert guitar/drums/bass, it'll be a long while before you pass this.

JPSChampagne
10-27-2009, 10:44 AM
My beef with the "Bathwater" thing was the "collection of lovers you've housed in your covers" (or something like that) line. Figured that was heavy on the innuendo enough that it would be excluded.

Also - there's a lot of reason to think this isn't the end-all be-all list. "YYZ" by Rush is available for this but "Lenny" by SRV isn't. There's no way an instrumental would be barred from a game that has to be family friendly. This either isn't complete or just plain isn't the right list.

The thing about innuendo is its only innuendo if the kid knows the second meaning.

Look at some of the more popular family films. They have dialogue that is written smart enough to mean one thing to kids (or mean NOTHING to kids) and mean something else to parents.

I think it shows HMX (or whatever process approves these songs) is being pretty lenient with content.

JPSChampagne
10-27-2009, 10:49 AM
Well if we're saying it's okay "because kids don't know what it means", then there's an even longer list of things that should have been acceptable that this list excludes. I'm not trying to argue that there's a bad filter - I'm just saying that there is enough fault with this list to question its validity as the end-all be-all.

Sento Kaiba

Also if YYZ is there, why isn't Caprici since its an insturmental? If its a difficulty thing, Hmx did allow Constant Motion.

Similar state with the Green Day songs, nowhere to be seen on this list

But tragically there will always be fault with the list regardless of what it does or does not include...as it all will get lumped in with the censorship debate that goes on from time to time (home of the popular: "But there's a Goddamn in El Scorcho" defense)

Possible that many more RB DLC will be playable in the game, and that this is just the list of songs that will be initially displayed in the Lego RB in-game store, or in the XBL marketplace under the Lego RB heading

cherokeesam
10-27-2009, 12:52 PM
While we're on the subject:

Has there been any definitive answer on how RB2 > LEGO filtering will work? To wit: will we have to re-download our DLC into LRB, or will it automatically boot up in LRB (the songs that sneak past the censor firewall, that is)?

T-Hybrid

I don't think any redownloading will be neccesary, as it appears the game has a way of "just knowing" what songs are okay for it.

My guess is there's going to be some kind of list built into the game that will help it figure out which songs up until a certain point are compatible. Future DLC would simply contain a value indicating "Yay or Nay" on LEGO compatibilty.

Someone asked about Blue Sky and if I recall correctly the lyrics said something about getting high. Which could be interpreted as an inuendo about drug use.

It's a stretch, but you don't know what criteria they're using to filter by... swear words, sexual inuendo, drug inuendo, violence themes. It's a basketcase the ESRB has created with its ratings system.

No matter what system they use, there is going to be a high degree of subjectivity and room for disagreement. I'm holding out hope for Hammer Smashed Face.

Eh, cool they're using RB DLC, but I'll probably just play the actual game for the new songs and play them all from my RockBand2 game when I need the full library of songs.

Depending on what carries over, this'll probably be the one my kids end up playing a lot, especially if the song sorting is better than RB2's

I'm wondering if this will all be properly retiered for LRB. Something considered fairly easy in normal Rock Band might be on the challenging side in Lego, for example.

Really, though, I'd just like to see Constant Motion get the Impossible Guitar tier it deserves (and probably a bump to Impossible Band to go with it).

Looked up the lyrics for "Blue Sky". Contains the lyric, "Lord, you know it makes me high". Ironically... I think it got blacklisted for using "lord", which also blacked out "No Rain", which is completely clean. Seems to me any reference to "lord" or "god" in any capacity got a song booted.

This is, of course, just going from DLC I know all the words to. If anyone can tell me otherwise, that'd be super. And just for note I am not a religious person to any degree and I'm not trying to state there is some nefarious reason for this. Just seems to be a curious detail.

Also - a question about how the filter works - if you bought songs in a pack, will the whole pack be blacked out because of an individual song? I know there's not a lot of reason to be suspicious of that, but I'm still curious.

People never know what to censor. Remember how IGN censored 'blow' in Killer Queen during screenshots of GH:Smash Hits?

I honestly don't think anyone really knows what to censor. One day, they may come in and be really puritan, the next day is Friday and they are all lax about what slides through. In fact, there may be several different people deciding the ESRB for each song, and the songs were divided up, and some people are more lax on lyrics more than others

PEOPLE, THE "USABLE" DLC LIST IS NOT COMPLETE.

Please wait until a FINAL list is submitted before sharpening up the pitchforks and firing up the torches over what should/shouldn't have been censored.

And more food for thought: some songs may not make it through the filter through reasons that have NOTHING to do with censorship --- could be quite simply that the band/label chose NOT to okay the export of particular tracks (you know, like we've seen happen in RB1>RB2, GHWT>GH5, etc.)

I'm really surprised Aces High made it. Did anyone hear that song in Madden 10 (an E-rated game)? They completely butchered the song with the edits. It was amazingly bad. See, I have the theory that ever since the RB1 licences (which by the sounds of it were worded as getting the licence for RB1 only and then having to relicense later for export) HMX have been licensing songs for the "Rock Band Platform" to stop awkward loopholes around exporting and DLC compatibility and such. This would be why we have seen DLC tracks being used so readily in different formats on the portable games, and why there are no problems around putting DLC on track packs. It's all part of the Rock Band Platform.

That's how I would try and word the license agreements anyway. (My mum works in Art Licensing, so I like to think I know the rudiments at least)

Yeah, that's it. Some DB table of a random group of 183 songs spanning three years worth of DLC got accidentally "imported" out of nowhere.

If you can tell me what these 183 random songs have in common that they'd all magically be in a single table aside from the other 700 or so DLC songs, I'd love to hear it. Or do you just not know how databases are actually used?

What I think is silly is that the first list that came out wasn't complete. It's not like this game showed up two weeks ago. I'm sure Harmonix had DLC compatibility plans in the works for months. Why release half ass lists? Did no one from Harmonix play "Best Day Ever" and they had to scrub the lyrics, in case Spongebob sang something risky?

A couple of possibilities:

- The game doesn't come out til next week so there is no rush on getting the full list over there. Maybe they are going through the content and verifying them and while doing this sending partial lists to MS so they don't overwhelm them all at once.

- They gave the entire list to MS and they are doing it in groups. Maybe they have to actually test that the songs show up in the store and are downloadable and don't feel like doing 600 at one time.

Im sure there are other possibilities, but who cares. The list has already been updated once since initial release. I have faith that HMX will have the final list done by the 3rd.

What I think is silly is that the first list that came out wasn't complete.
...I normally hate doing this, but I'm going to have to put on the "I'm a software developer" hat again.

There is something like 800 songs in the Rock Band DLC library. These songs have to be looked over, and then updated on the servers of at least two different major gaming companies.

This means a number of things:

1) We don't know what the process is for being approved for use in LEGO. Yes, some songs are more obviously family-friendly than others, but there's still 800 songs that have to be considered. You're not going to do them all at once. Not by a longshot.

2) HMX is a professional software developement company. As such, they are going to have a developement strategy that includes a scheduled deployement/rollout plan. And from my own experiences rolling out new products (especially those that involve databases/server updates) it's never wise to do it all in one fell swoop.

Why? Because, most obviously, Rock Band isn't the only thing that is requesting updates for the online stores on any of the three consoles. The Rock Band forums (though it's true for most fan forums) seem to have this very egocentric view that they are the only game out there.

Running a mass update of over 800 pieces of data in a database is not wise. If something goes wrong, it's wrong for EVERYTHING. The smart move would be to run partial updates as groups of songs gain approval? Why? Two reasons.

1) Any impact to other services that results from running an update would be over a shorter period of time. Yes you may run multiple small updates, but at least you can space those out over multiple days.

2) Any mistakes in the update process impact a smaller amount of data. We programmers would love if everything "just worked" right out of the gate, but stuff happens. I'd rather they botch the updates on 183 songs and have to take an extra day to fix it than botch an update on 800 songs and essentially bring the whole store screeching to a halt.

But go ahead with the armchair developer BS. It's rather cute.

Pretty much. The more recent songs (since June or July) have a rating in the data that ostensibly determines whether it's appropriate for Legos or not. The list for those songs can be seen here (http://rockband.yajags.com/songinfo/?parameter0=rating&comparator0=equal&value0=Everyone&parameter1=game&comparator1=equal&value1=Rock+Band+DLC&orderby=songname&sortdirection=Ascending&action=Search) . I'm guessing the ratings for older songs are either on the disc or in a very early patch.

A list wouldn't be bad if it's not that large. Heck, depending on how the RB1 and RB2 Music Store Cache files work, it's possible LEGO could just scan those two when it starts up...create its own...and then simply compare those three files on subsequent startups to figure out which songs on the HDD are a-okay.

PS: That site is VERY awesome by the way. Though I would recommend to whoever makes it that they include artist information by default along with song title.

Stupid question: If I own a song pack in which only a few of the songs have been allowed through the filter, will it still find the ones I am allowed to play?
The more I think about it the more I realise there would be no real reason that they wouldn't work but allow me this bout of paranoia.

Wait, you sold back a football game because one of the songs on the game was edited? Seems like a slight misplacement of priorities.

Heh, I should have expected these type of comments. FWIW, the game was an impulse buy. I'm not much into madden anymore, but there was a one-weekend only pre-sell locally at a Microcenter for $35 the weekend before release. I never buy football games anymore, but it was way too crazy a deal to pass up. The sale and my favorite band being featured the game actually put me over the edge. I otherwise wouldn't have gotten it. I figured if I didn't enjoy the game I could sell it back for less than the cost of a rental.

I played the game for a weekend and got all the achievements. I enjoyed it for what it was worth, but have a huge backlog and probably would not have touched it anymore. I had gotten my money's worth at that point. I'm sure if you were a Madden fan and were really into the game every year the soundtrack wouldn't matter. However, for how little I had invested in the game, hearing a song you're adored to for over 20 years be so needlessly butchered in a game that's shoveled out every year like clockwork made it easy to sell back a game I'd only play occasionally for no loss. So I feel completely justified in acting out of the principle of the thing in this case.

Anyway, Lego next week. Yay!

Weird that Take Me To The River and Once In A Lifetime (apparently) aren't going make the cut. Take Me To The River I can maybe understand ("take my money, my cigarettes", perhaps?) but I really struggle to find anything objectionable in the lyrics of Once In A Lifetime.

This just in, the list has been updated again to 334 total songs (including a few more people assumed didn't make the cut).

Hopefully the guy who was scraping the page for data can stop by and do it again.

Excellent question.
Answer: Songs within packs (both downloaded and Exported) will appear without issue. This was confirmed by videos showing songs from the RB2 20-pack being in the song listing.

I don't see why Know Your Enemy, 21 Guns, and a lot of the Queen songs aren't on here.

I'm sure if you have the country pack too, almost all of those songs will work, as it was rated E10. Maybe not She Thinks My Tractor's Sexy, though. :P

I don't understand A Favor House Atlantic being there and The Running Free not being... If anything, the second is more "poppy" and less graphic. Although, Running Free does mention hell.

Unless the E/T ratings contained in new DLC don't actually determine what's good in Lego, Killer Queen won't make the cut (as I showed in an earlier post)

no White Rabbit? ;)What? This song is about Alice in Wonder Land? I saw that movie when I was a little. Everything in that song takes place in a Disney movie, personally in my opinion everything in that song is 100% tame.

Once the game is out there officially, you'll see more reports regarding compatible songs (Especially for the two/three track packs with content not currently in the store...as well as RB1)

We'll also hopefully get the answer as to if RB1 can play LEGO songs.

No RE: Your Brains? Aw.

My little brother plays RB2, he's 9, and that is hands down his favorite song in the game.

It's kinda too bad they didn't put in a Parental Filter option, leave the game as it is for parents who don't know much about the whole Rock Band thing so their kids can have fun with stuff and not get into trouble, but then disable it for older players or people who know what songs to let their kids have (i.e. enable or disable songs by choice).

I already kinda do that when getting DLC for my brother, I obviously avoid stuff like Hammer Smashed Face.

He actually bought both Alanis Morisette songs by himself the week them came out.

Is this the final? Are the going to allow more of the older DLC to transfer? I was surprised at a few that didn't like "once in a lifetime"

Just to elaborate it’s a southern term for losing ones temper.

Obviously, because we know how he'd turn out if he heard songs like that.

Any word on why some songs are grayed out and others are just missing?

looks like cherry-picking, basically

most surprising additions, to me are red devil, the entire all that remains pack, my curse, bloodstone, and charlene. There's about a total of like 10 metal songs

edit: Also, something in the way got it, so they must not show album art in the game

lego metal yeahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

It's probably because of the little exchange between the dudes and the girl during the talking part of the song. i think they cuss a couple of times and mention beer.
