AIC. (http://www.aintitcool.com/node/42866)

A while back we heard The Powers That Be were working to bring Number 5 back to theater screens. Now we know the director who'll help get him there: Steve Carr (PAUL BLART: MALL COP).

Scripted by Dan Milano ("Robot Chicken"), the remake is a robot reboot that brings the iconic Johnny 5 into the 21st century. Built by the military to be a highly sophisticated weapon, Johnny 5 develops a conscience and personality after being hit by lightning. He befriends a lonely boy and his fractured family.
[EDIT]
"Short Circuit" fits into Dimension's priority of making franchise films, a list that includes "Scream 4," "Spy Kids 4," "Clive Barker's Hellraiser," "Scanners" and "An American Werewolf in London." The "Spy Kids" and "Hellraiser" films will be 3-D.

Back in 1986, the original SHORT CIRCUIT film was directed by John Badham (WARGAMES, SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER).

I'm getting warm and fuzzy childhood memories now. Which makes me dread any remakes.

This was a triumph...

I'm making a note here: HUGE BOX OFFICE FLOP!!

Why remake "Short Circuit"? Also, what is with that remake plot? It was more fun watching the horny robot chase after the chick in the original than it will be to watch him befriend a lonely boy whose family life sucks.

OK, good thing the title got the joke out of the way immediately.
I never saw the first two, but I've heard of them.
And in all these restoring old franchises films... Which of them HAVE been good to show that Number 5 can still be enjoyable when alive once more?

Why remake "Short Circuit"?

Because Hollywood is totally out of ideas, as evidenced by the glut of remakes we've seen in recent years.

We don't need a remake of "Short Circuit". Hell, we barely even needed a second movie, if though that was still pretty good.

I always thought of Wall-E as Johnny 5 Jr. Anybody else?

Actually, I saw similarities too the first time I saw Wall-E, yeah
