View Full Version : Can you get rid of the nauseating factor?

I don't know about you guys, but I feel physically ill after playing either of the Guitar Hero's for any extended period. I bet you've noticed that after you play a song, if you look at a wall or something it seems to move around. This effect seems to get more pronounced the more you play the game and eventually you get a headache or feel sick in the stomach (well me and my friends do).
So my question is: is there any way to eliminate this nauseating effect from the game? It's really the last thing you want in a party game (when most people are drinking to add to the effects). I assume it has something to do with all the colours and the way the come towards you and how you have to focus on only one real part of the image. I don't know, I'm no expert, but I have some friends who can't play more than a couple songs without getting a huge headache and feeling sick in the stomach.

Hyper-Speed!
.... or not. I've never noticed the whole wall moving thing after playing guitar hero, but i get it after watching movie credits.

That only happens to me if Ive been watching someone play using the hyper-speed cheat, which is a lot of people online it seems.
Normally, it doesnt affect me.

i don't have this problem with guitar hero or eyetoy antigrav (another harmonix game - still waiting for number 2 on next gen system) hint, hint harmonix

i did notice this problem with amplitude. A tight spot would form in the back of my neck while playing. I stop playing it would go away. It's not as fun, but the solution I found was to play it in black and white.
i remember reading the little section about seizures and the different colors affecting a small part of the population. i guess while playing amplitude, i'm part of this small part.
here's a clip of amplitude if you never heard of it. it's a fun game if you can find it...

instead of black and white you might be able to just turn down the color intensity.

Yeah see originally I thought it was just me, but like everybody who has played it at my house (like at least ten people) have all reported the same thing. It seems to affect everybody, just to varying degrees.
Perhaps it has something to do with the PAL version of the game? Because I'm in Australia.
I'm serious guys! Go play guitar hero then look at like a paiting or some other flat surface that has a texture or picture or something to it.

well, put it in black and white
then just pretend you're a band from the 50's.
call yourselves the "Sock Hops" or something....

I live in Australia too *high five*. But yeah, none of my friends have ever said anything about it.
But yeah, it does happen to some people. I assume it might just be related to how hard your actually concentrating on the screen. If your hardcore player starring at the exact smae spot for ages it will happen. If your just playing casually, looking away from the screen occasionally it might not happen as much.
It's just something thats apparently called Motion Aftereffect... theres a cool thing to do with it here (http://www.michaelbach.de/ot/mot_adaptSpiral/index.html).

The only experience I've had with this was when GH2 crashed on me the other day, and even though the game had froze, the note chart seemed like it was still moving. I thought I was going insane.

Thinks start looking like they are moving after I play for about an hour or two. I don't drink or take drugs, so its the game. I still love them though :)

ive had that problem where things seem to move after a song, its weird, but i think i could be yours eyes refocusing. but its not done it recently as i can remember, it could have something to do with the telly aswell i guess.

I've heard of that before. It's never happened to me though.
Here is the epilepsy warning (I know its from nintendo but still the same concept) (http://www.nintendo.com/consumer/manuals/precautions_console_pak_english.jsp)
It could be your TV I suppose? Have you tried it on different sets?

Wow I thought I was the only one, happens to me Now and then when I notice it.
you just look away from the screen once the songs done I looked at my chair the other day and the cushion looked like it was swirling around and around like a massive brown(Black) hole.

i know...idk maybe cuz your standing and concentrating on a set point for a long time...drums you'll be sitting..more relaxation..and singers either gonna just stand there or bounce around...i feel bad for singers in this game "me being one" they're gonna run out of energy so fast..then they suck cuz they have no energy to sing...its the only instrument where it can go sour after an extended period of time playing...and they cant sing when just waking up cuz of flem and they cant sing after an all nighter cuz their chords had no time to rest...its hard to be a singer

What you're talking about is caused by staring at a spot on your television where the fretboard and the notes are scrolling down. Focusing your eyes on the spot in such a manner for a long time causing this "optical illusion."
Unless you want them to completely revamp the game's gameplay, there's no way to get rid of this.

Come to think of it... I did get naueated while playing Guitar Hero 2. I was playing "Made in Mexico".

if he's got headaches, it's similar to what i experienced, i think it has more to do with the epilepsy warning..
hey... thanks for that link with the spiral, my wall did look like it was moving ! all w/o drugs too ! now how can i put that in a pill and sell it?????

I remember experiencing this type stuff (not the nausea though) when I first played GH. But I remember back then I would just stand still, somewhat close to the tv, and stare at the screen.
Try playing a few steps back, and move around a lil while playing, that way you're not heavily focused on one spot.

This used to happen to me and my friends all the time
Either we got used to it or we aren't as hardcore and don't play as much anymore

To clarify a couple things: Yes I've played the game on two different tvs and had the same effect (both CRT televisions). And I must say I don't think it's me. As I said it happens to all of my friends as well, and I've never had any of this sort of problem with video games before (except for Descent on PS1 *hurl*).
I guess it must just be from focusing on the bottom of the screen while all the colours etc whizz by. I do focus pretty hard because I play everything on expert and I don't like to lose :-)
Reason I bring it up is I thought I had it bad but the bass player in my band came around the other night to play and he could only play like one or two songs before getting a massive headache and having to lie down. He said he felt really motion sick as well. This is the worst I've seen somebody affected by it. It would just be a real shame for the people affected if they couldn't play their favourite game because it makes them ill.

My brother has the same thing too. But he has problems with his eyes, he went to an oculist and now he's getting new glasses.
Besides that, it often has to do with how often you blink with your eyes. Make sure you don't concentrate to much on the screen, I mean, yeah, concentrate on the game if you want, but don't forget to blink with your eyes once in a while!

65" rear projection TV, and I've had the "things are still moving" after I stopped playing. But only for a few seconds.

Same here. Although when I first played I would close my eyes and see notes going down the screen. It'd be like that for days.

I've had it happen to me and my buds once, and we found more humor in it than discomfort. I remember lying down in front of my friend's couch and my friends looked at me and started laughing. Of course, I didn't know what the crap they were laughing at; plus, I was too busy watching the ceiling move to care. After a short time, they explained to me that it looked like my bud's couch was actually eating me because I continuously moved up and under it, according to them. :D

haha Wow, I would have liked to have seen that, for me its just after long sessions and I'm sure its from just starring at one spot for hours.

Hahaha... the old vertical shift. I get that mega when I play on a projector. It's like free, fake drugs!
