View Full Version : PS3 RB2 guitar disconnect problem

I am having an issue where, part way into a song, my RB2 guitar will disconnect .
Whatever the last frets I pressed will appear on screen as remaining 'pushed down'.

The red light on the dongle will be flashing, but pressing the connect button on the guitar does nothing
I can't strum, I can't do anything. The only thing I can do is wait to fail out of the song, and either unplug - replug in the guitar dongle, or turn the guitar off and on again.

I think I've isolated the problem to the following (but I'm not 100% sure):
- both RB2 guitar dongle and drum dongle attached (into separate usb ports)
- I will have been playing the drums earlier and switched to guitar
- always happens shortly after the switch over to guitar
- I know it is not a battery issue, because after the freezing and the shut off/shut on or unplug/replug workaround, the guitar will be fine

What I'm thinking is that when the drum controller 'auto-shuts-off' while idle, that is what is causing the disconnect.

In my PS3 settings, I have turned off the Controller Auto-off feature, but the drums seem to go auto-off regardless.

Has anyone come across this issue?
And more importantly, perhaps a more graceful solution?

It isn't unusual for us to have two people playing (drums, guitar), but have the drummer sit out for a song to take a break.... or even with just one person playing but going from one instrument to the next.
In short, it happens enough that it is a problem, and it doesn't seem like something that should be happening.

Any thoughts/input welcomed.

So you did not try fresh batteries?

I would, just for grins.

Low power can do some nutty things while still "working" technically.

Thanks for responding Doc,
yes, I did try fresh batteries, in both the guitar and the drums, didn't make any difference.

This seems to be a very specific set of circumstances for it to happen, and likely a total non-factor for most, but it happens to me, and I can duplicate it exactly every time.

A workaround would be to turn off the drums completely before switching to guitar.
But it's apparent that something just isn't working quite right... and that bugs me.

It's almost like when the drums shut off on their own for being idle, that the 'disconnect' or whatever signal goes to both the drum dongle and guitar dongle at the same time, and disconnects them both.
