My kick pedal won't respond, I've tried two different pedals that I also tested on another set. If it helps, I have an SL set, they both work with a QM set. My set also wouldn't recognize the double bass adapter, back when it worked. My set is waaaay out of warranty, broken and fixed (red pad snapped off - I play hard), has Goodwood heads -- no way can I RMA this thing. I'm just wondering if there's some way I can fix this, or do I need to fork over $50 or more to replace something that's less than a year old?

Welcome to the rockband forums.
Drums are a consumable item. Even the most expensive real drums require new heads at a considerable expense from time to time.
It sounds like in your case, they (the toy drums) may be taking quite a beating.
If I had to guess I would say you have a damaged kick pedal input jack that may have a disconnected lead which would not be surprising if you smashed a whole drum head off.
It should be a rather simple fix that should not require more than soldering a new jack onto the proper leads.
Take a look inside and see whats up.
Need more help, just ask.
FWIW - None of my repair ideas, suggestions or inferences are authorized by Harmonix so they should be taken as one Rockbander helping another, not official advice, by any means.

I actually have taken it apart, and checked the guts. The input jack is fine. No wiggling or broken solder. The pedal doesn't activate even if I short the connections on the board. (The other drums do.) I tried this only because the drums are otherwise dead, and I wasn't risking breaking something that already worked.
As far as the drum falling apart, I really think I'm just the one that finished the job, these #@&* kids like to hit it with their fists.

LOL - Caveman style.
Sounds like its time for new hardware. At least the GW heads will swap over to it.

Hey Doc - I think I have this exact problem. How do I get at the kick jack on the RB2 kit? I unscrewed and removed the main compartment/battery, but the kick port was still covered up.
