View Full Version : Practice Mode, Fast runs

Having never played a Guitar Hero game before, I'm not really sure how to efficiently play the guitar. I'm up to hard mode if not expert with the exception of the GGaHT set, and I noticed that with the fast runs my arm felt like it was going to fall off and that I wasn't too consistent. Following the advice of an in game tip I decided to try playing the guitar using an up and down motion on the strum bar, but I don't seem to be doing it correctly.
I tried going into practice mode, which told me I was getting a 99% playing Highway Star, but back in the normal game it turns out I was hitting too many notes and breaking the stream, while practice mode only cared that I was hitting all the notes. Maybe having the sequence feature in practice mode would be a good thing. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to hit all the notes correctly using that technique? Does it matter how far up or down I push the strum bar? Or is it merely that I'm slightly off, playing those sixteenth (?) notes.
Also does anyone else have trouble telling which notes you have to strum for and which ones you don't? They come so fast sometimes that I only see the colors and have trouble telling them apart, possibly because I'm not blinking and my eyes are watering.:)
Being able to see the multiplier in practice mode is a feature that existed in Guitar Hero 2 and Rock the '80's on the PS2 (not sure about Guitar Hero 2 on the Xbox 360). This is one of the things I miss the most that changed from Guitar Hero to Rock Band.
As for your questions, one of the best ways to develop consistency alt-strumming is to practice alt-strumming entire songs. This helps you develop control, which makes working on consistency while alt-strumming quickly much easier.
It matters how far you push the strum bar, depending on the state of your guitar. Mine used to just require a small motion to trigger, now it has to go all the way. One way you can test is by practicing on the main menu (the one that has the 'multiplayer' and 'training' options). Start with 'training' highlighted, then slowly push the strum bar up or down until the highlight moves. This way, you can find the actual trigger point of the guitar. Another thing you can do on this screen is practice your alt-strums. Start with 'training' highlighted again, then start alt-strumming. You can see and hear how consistent you are so you get some feedback on your technique. This is also a good way to see if your guitar is not registering strums.
One reason you could be slightly off is if you are strumming HOPO (hammer on pull off) notes. Most people push the fret button down first, then strum. If you don't time it right, when you push the fret button down, it can count as a HOPO, then when the strum comes, it counts as an extra note, thus breaking the streak.
