View Full Version : A question about Black Friday sales...

Are most of the sales on Black Friday all day? Or are they at a certain time?
Because I just saw an Ad for K-Mart on a site and it said a bunch of games are going to be $40 on Black Friday.... like Left 4 Dead 2.
Here are some sales:
Sears (http://www.destructoid.com/black-friday-sears-has-a-few-things-you-ll-want-154329.phtml)
Old Navy (http://www.destructoid.com/black-friday-get-free-lego-rock-band-at-old-navy-154211.phtml)
Kmart (http://www.destructoid.com/black-friday-here-s-what-kmart-s-selling-154217.phtml)

Normally all day... but the reality is it's first come, first serve. So if you aren't there at opening forget it.

Yeah, I know about that stuff. I was just wondering if it's all day or not.
I'm actually seeing some other sweet deals on Black Friday on Dtoid. Apparently you can get Lego Rock Band for free with a $20 purchase.
I'll have to post these in this thread later on.

When I worked at Kmart we would usually have doorbuster sales that lasted for 3 or 4 hours and then the rest of the ad ran all day.

There's usually an ad in the front that will indicate how long the sales go for. Some places do "early bird" sales that go from 6:30-9am, then sales that go from 9-noon, and then all day sales. If you're really unsure, call them.

Around here we got crazies that will stand outside for hours on end before the store even opens. I don't like large crowds and the hassle of the all inclusive Black Friday experience.
I'd rather sit at home, play some games, and eat leftover turkey
Oh and Flawless, I'll go with 8.

I'm not even going outside on Black Friday. I despise humanity enough as it is. I don't want to be bumped around and cussed at only to find the item I want is out of stock or some old lady got what I wanted for her 10 year old grandson that's probably a little brat anyway. :p
It also doesn't help that I get nervous when around people. I feel lost around so many people. This is why I hate going to Wal-Mart.

That would be the $20 Old Navy = Free LRB deal that has a thread going in the LRB forums. And that ad does say that supplies will be limited, and it's first come first serve. As the store is opening at 3 AM, I can pretty much guarantee you that they'll be out of copies of LRB most likely within the first hour.

That Old Navy/LRB deal looks tempting. But the Old Navy near me is in the same development as an outlet mall, so finding a parking spot will be pretty much impossible.

It's the day after Thanksgiving. It's when all the major stores run huge sales to kick off the Christmas shopping season. People go crazy. One person was trampled to death at the Wal-Mart in my town.
Oh, and the reason people go crazy is the flu shot.

The day after Thanksgiving. It's called "Black Friday" because of the mass amount of Xmas shopping that is done that day. The extra sales usually put any store that was "in the red", meaning not making a profit for the year, into "the black", meaning making a profit for the year.
So lots of stores open really freaking early (like 3 AM) and have really low priced sales.

Let's really hope no one gets trampled or killed this year.
Black Friday is always an assurance for someone getting trampled over a sale.

The Friday after Thanksgiving has become known in the last few decades as one of the busiest of the year for retailers, the traditional start of the holiday shopping season. One of the names used for this day is Black Friday, which some say comes from the fact that it is the biggest shopping day of the year, putting stores firmly in the black. This is false, as the days closer to Christmas generate more in sales. For the true origins of the term, we have to dig back a few decades.
Laurence H. Black was one of the best floor men in town, working in the men’s department of the old Osberger’s Department Store for over thirty years. He had been with the store since its humble beginnings as a menswear store on Richmond Avenue in the late 1920s. Except for a very brief stint in the service during World War II, he remained with the store as it grew, eventually settling into its later eight-floor retail palace on North Geary Street. Black was a fixture in the store, presiding over the suits, shirts, ties and millinery in his ever-present black suit (”That’s how they remember me. Black suit, Mr. Black, see?”) with a red carnation in the lapel. In a very cutthroat industry, his was one of those rare cases in which he was respected by everyone in the city’s retail trade, regardless of store affiliation. His reputation was even cemented throughout the region, as Osberger’s expanded in the 1950s and Mr. Black would often be called upon to train sellers at the various stores.
But it was the downtown store he loved the most. He was typically one of the first there in the morning (just behind Wharton Osberger) and one of the last to leave, which is exactly as it was on November 27, 1964. Toward the end of his twelve-hour shift, as the massive brass clock overlooking the restaurant in the store’s Grande Center Court read 7:48 pm, Laurence H. Black collapsed, felled by a heart attack. Old man Osberger closed the store the next day and clerks at the city’s other retail palaces wore black in tribute.
The following year, on the Friday after Thanksgiving, all of the employees wore black suits and dresses, highlighted by a single red carnation, with a moment of silence at 7:48 pm, a tradition that carried on year after year and was picked up by many other stores in the city. But, through many consolidations and sales and employee turnover and whatnot, the reason for the tribute and the tradition itself has been lost, save for a few old-timers who still remember. The small Osberger chain was dissolved in the early 1990s and the old parent company is now the owner of a chain of movie theaters in Australia. If you trace back through approximately fifteen mergers and acquisitions you’ll find that the old Osberger stores themselves are all now Macy’s. The central Osberger’s store on North Geary was converted to office space in 2001, after sitting vacant for a number of years. They’ve kept the central court and clock, however.

I've done Black Friday the past few years and have learned my lesson. First of all, Best Buy is the only store I will go to in the wee hours of the morning. They have an orderly system and do not let the swarms go into the store at the same time. That means you might wait outside a little longer, but once you get in, you can get your stuff and go without fighting people or waiting in cashier lines for hours.
Once I went to a Circuit City line and literally waited in the cashier line for hours. It was a miserable experience, and I understand that's the way Wal-Marts can be.
I'll go to other stores in the late morning or afternoon. They usually have enough inventory at the same low prices.
Also with some retailers you can order stuff online for in-store pickup.
I love Black Friday.
