how do you remove the top piece from the guitar?

Any idea how i go about removing the top piece of the guitar?

You don't. It isn't supposed to come off.

You must disassemble the guitar (namely the back of the neck) to the point where you can push the lock tabs from the headstock and then remove the headstock.
