Here goes...

Alternative metal: I purposely went with this one first. This genre was around long before nu metal, which was simply an outgrowth of alternative metal. When alternative metal started off, the metal guitar riffs were still there, but they were joined with a willingness to explore what could happen. The bans that would be classified as alternative metal often were venturing into metal territory from wherever they were on the rock spectrum. By the rise of grunge, alternative metal had standardized its sound and nu metal was beginning to pop up.

Nu metal: No, I'm not going to say that it's metal with rapping. I was only joking when I did that. Nu metal essentially takes grunge, funk metal, whatever other metal genres the band playing it picks and hip hop, then blends them. Over time, nu metal ended up with a format which became stale and moldy- kind of like that week-old sandwich you made and then forgot to eat. This format consisted of dark, textured guitar riffs, an extra string on any and all guitars used, various styles of vocals ranging from the scat occasionally used in Koᴙn to the rapping used consistently in Limp Bizkit and hip-hop beats. A DJ was not required, but was sometimes used.

Progressive rock: This genre grew out of a mentality to sustain artistry in rock music. When prog was growing up, rock bans of the time often consisted of an instrumental format of guitar-bass-drums-organ. While this was perfectly fine, bands in the progressive rock scene wanted to make progress. The standard verse-chorus format was to be forgotten, or to simply have instrumental interludes thrown in. If a member of 4chan were to come in mimicking a meme, they'd probably say "Long song is looooong!" Indeed, they are long. Prog also tends to use non-traditional rock instruments, albeit not nearly to the degree post-rock does.

Well, how'd I do? Better than usual?
