View Full Version : Is the Ps2 version really THAT bad?

I dunno, I've been hearing some mixed reviews about the Ps2 version. I only own a Wii/Ps2, and was planning on getting GH3 for the Wii this Christmas, and then possibly wait for Rock Band Wii..if it ever comes out. But I don't really think it will, so I was thinking maybe I could scrap the GH3 for Rock Band Ps2..but then I read all the things that were left out and thought it was crap :\

But then....IGN reviewed it:

Instead of the crazy-deep tour, PS2 bands get the traditional -- think Guitar Hero -- set of songs you need to play through before you open the next set of songs and repeat the process.

Do these subtractions equate to a crappy Band World Tour? No, just a lessened one. See, the draw of Rock Band isn't linked solely to globetrotting and unlocking roadies and PR firms -- although that stuff is awesome. Rock Band succeeds because it's infinitely fun to play with your friends. Watching someone nail the high part of "Creep" or saving a vocalist who stumbles and fails in "Enter Sandman" not only makes you feel like you're accomplishing something in a game, it makes you feel like you're part of a band.

It gives you a taste of that everyman dream -- being part of a drunken, dysfunctional musical family!

Is this really true? Does it really not matter that much about the other things?
I mean, I have 3 sisters..so I'll never be out of supply of rockers when my friends aren't hanging out. So I dunno, I don't think I'll need online play really, since I'm barely lonely xD

Help :o

Oh, and also..how are the graphics and everything else that's not gameplay wise, because I know that part is ok. How do the notes look? The screenshots on IGN make them look different but I dunno, are they [the look of the notes] the same as the 360/Ps3 versions?

if you arent getting a ps3 or a 360 in the near future get it just b/c you can play the whole freakin band i have the 360 version and its awesome. the ps2 version may be shorter (idk) and no downloads but for the fun of playin a whole band ......................priceless

If you want to be able to download songs, play the Band World Tour, or create a character, then yeah, you're screwed for a while. Those are the only differences.

If you're fine with just rocking out to the 58 default tracks with three friends, you should go ahead and just get it.

BONUS POINT: I have heard that the PS2 instruments work with the PS3 version, so upgrading that way would be cheaper. I only have a 360 and Wii, so I cannot confirm this.

The PS2 version is just fine. As mentioned above there is no DLC and the world tour mode is a little stripped down. But to be honest, I haven't even noticed it. I've been to busy enjoying rocking out with my wife to even care.

I don't think I'm getting one in the future, because of my dad
He doesn't understand that with only a Wii, I can't get the best enjoyment of the whole nex gen. He only lets me have 1 console at a time :'[

I dunno if the Ps2 version is shorter, but even if I had the option of DLC I wouldn't do it since the game is expensive enough as it is. And yea, I agree that playing with people is very fun and outweighs everything else.

I'd like to do all those things you mentioned, but problem is I can't..and I don't know if they even take away from the appeal of the game. I wonder how long 58 tracks will last me and 2 other friends :\

A little stripped down? They took away everything xD
Are there even fans or anything in this game? Do you just go right into BWT and play a song right away? Just like GH..

And that's awesome..with that last sentence I'm pretty sure now that the "cripplyness" of the BWT won't take away from the fun or experience of the game :D

Meh, so basically what it's down to for Christmas is...GH3 for Wii or Rock Band for Ps2. I'd say the two are alike in gameplay, as you just go in and play song after song and finish setlists one by one. Same thing in BWT for Ps2 version.

Then again GH3 has online play, but it's single player...while RB features me playing with 2 other people, but no online. I guess playing w/ people IRL > playing with intranet people. I dunno, I guess that's all I have to say.

Judging by those standards Rock Band Ps2 wins, right? They both have the same gameplay elements basically, but in one you have multiple instruments.

Though it's missing some of the cooler bonus features, the game is intact, and fun as ever.
