What bands do you feel are iconic to your generation? For purposes of the thread, please give what generation you associate with (Greatest Generation, Baby Boomers, Gen X, post Gen X...) and a band that you feel represented your peers' ideals, struggles, or triumphs while you were growing up.
As for me, I'm the Gen X son of a late Baby Boomer; I'll throw out Red Hot Chili Peppers. Blood Sugar sex Magic was a must-have album of the 90's. Play Under The Bridge in a bar full of X-ers and a sing-along will most likely erupt. And as the band has grown older and matured, they still frikkin' rock.

From the 60's generation id say The Who.
How their music changed from the 60s to 70s was iconic of how we as a culture changed.
And after all they were just talkin about my generation..

To me
Lamb of God and Metalcore represent 00's but then again i only listen to jazz and metal and my friends are metal heads but depending what part of culture you belong to you may (and probably will have) a different view of each decades music icons

Tail end of Gen X:
Soundgarden
Nirvana
Pearl Jam
Smashing Pumpkins
Phish
NIN
Pantera
Radiohead
Tool
Red Hot Chili Peppers
But a lot of the defining acts for Gen X wasn't rock, but rap and hip hop. Even more so for Gen Y (at least so far). Incidently the general consensus is that if you're born in the 60s or 70s you are part of Gen X. If you were born in the 80s or 90s you are Gen Y. There's a lot of blurring in the middle though. I was born in 1979 so I kind of associate with both generations.
