I hope we get more balance going forward.

The fact of the matter is that a wide majority of rock bands are fronted by men. The obvious exception that comes to mind is Janis Joplin. I guess they could do White Rabbit, but there's probably not enough to it to justify having a song that uses a female vocalist.

Look at GH, GHII, and GHIII (what they have so far) soundtrack

Most of the songs are sung by males

Harmonix should'nt add bad bands just to have bands with female singers in the list.

But there is one good band that comes into my mind - Flyleaf! Please add "I'm so sick" to the list! ;)

There are very few prominant female vocalists, which is the problem. The women I could see making it into the game are Heart, Janis Joplin, and there was also the lead singer of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs who is mentioned in the "heroes" section of Rock Band's Myspace.

I would love to see more female vocalists and bands get some attention but the problem is there aren't many.

There is little chance of there being many songs in the game fronted by women.

and you gotta imagine there won't be as many women playing this game as men once it comes out.

I am forgetting my favorite current female rock band Cansei De Ser Sexy. They could easily contribute with Let's Make Love And Listen To Death From Above.

Electric Zen- I was reading this thread and couldn't think of too many women front bands that would be good in Rock Band......then it hit me. This song Rocks and it's an AWESOME FEMALE VOCALIST!!

Band is: "Seether" It's a duet with Amy Lee from Evanescence!!

Song Name: "Broken"

Good song...

Eman have you listened to Seether? I highly suggest listening to some of thier music the lead singer has a voice mix between Stone Temple Pilots, Pearl Jam, it's a good sound check it out.

Actuallty now that I think about Seether would be another awesome band to have some songs in Rock Band!

what about:
Dancehall Crashers - Queen For A Day
Fleetwood Mac - Go Your Own Way
Be Your Own Pet - Girls On TV
The Grates- Lies Are Much More Fun, Science Is Golden, or 19 20 20
Veruca Salt - i dont know their work apart from Volcano Girls which was good.
Letters To Cleo - Co-Pilot, Anchor, I Got Time
The Motels - they were popular i dont know their work though
The Distillers - Drain The Blood
Kim Wilde - Kids In America (or one of the other more rock-y ones from her career)
Save Ferris - Come On Eileen (some people dont like this version but i do)
Garbage - Only Happy When It Rains, When I Grow Up, or Bleed Like Me
Skulker - Newport Nightmare, Hej, or Rock Nugget
10,000 Maniacs - Because The Night
The Donnas - Its On The Rocks, Fall Behind Me
The Gossip - Standing In The Way Of Control

Some of them may not fit what they are going for with Rock Band but i think at least
Dancehall Crashers, Fleetwood Mac, The Grates, The Distillers, Garbage, The Donnas, and 10,000 Maniacs could be considered.

Thought i agree, its unlikely there will be much in the way of female led songs in the game, you never know, Arch Enemy maybe....Nightwish...Lacuna Coil.

I'd prefer they didn't go with that version of Broken. If they put a Seether song in, they really need to put one of their harder songs in (after all, it is called ROCK Band). If you want Amy Lee in the game, just put in an Evanescence song. The we have both Seether and Amy Lee (just not in the same song). I would suggest an Evanescence song, but I don't listen to them, sorry.

But, to list a few other options, Flyleaf is definitely a good choice. I'd go with "Fully Alive" over "I'm So Sick" since Fully Alive has a pretty good solo in it. Also, the guy above me was right to suggest Garbage. Some stuff from their first cd would be pretty good. You know, before they started to go somewhat pop/techno-ish (I can't think of a good way to describe the later albums). Also, some No Doubt could be pretty cool.

Naoko mentioned in the XFire chat that adding the vocal component in Rock Band presents the opportunity to attract many more chicks to the genre.

I agree.

Women are going to sing men's songs, but the game is going to have broader appeal if there is a selection of acts with female leads. Rock Band has a chance of breaking way out of the core gamer demographic, much like Wii Sports did last year.

Harmonix has covered 35 years of Rock and Roll history in its guitar games. I'm not going to turn this into a songlist thread, but anybody who is suggesting that you can't find 10 quality songs with female vocals over that time period is being willfully ignorant.

Sure, there are plenty of quality songs in that time period with female vocalists, but personally, they just don't rank as high in my personal list of favorites. It's not a matter of good, it's a matter of they have to be *outstanding*. That's the unfortunate truth. (And I used to be a big Heart fan.)

pretty spiffy track there. The chorus lacks a little bit in the guitar area to make for good charts on the game but I think overall it could work well. Glad you posted it, I'm gonna check em out.

A BIG thing to remember here is the DLC. Electric_Zen and Supergeek, you're both right for sure. Between the "extra" songs and the DLC, I think this can easily be addressed. It might be hard to find 10 great songs with female leads to fit into the normal song list (as compared to what is overall available, as Supergeek said) but I can find no problem whatsoever with fitting those 10 great songs and plenty more really into the DLC ( certainly) and then into the extra songs. I think these two areas is where we'll see them the most and perhaps even only because the majority of people playing the game are male and coming across one of these songs in the career mode might end up with something like "wow, there's no way i can reach that octave but I have to do something because this is career mode!" :p

EDIT: assuming there will be an "extra" song section like we're used to, haha. Hadn't really thought about that.

What are you talking about? You understand that Rock Band does not require you to sing in the same octave as the original artist, right?

Is a dude really going to feel less manly belting out the Cranberries' "Zombie" than Weezer's "Say It Ain't So"?

Maybe some 14-year-old boys might have hang-ups about that, but I hope Harmonix is looking to expand beyond that niche audience.

I love women in rock bands, and here are a few of my choices I hope are in the game:

The Gathering

Flowing Tears

Kittie

Heart

Jefferson Airplane & Jefferson Starship

Evenescence

Flyleaf

It'd be nice if they included some sort of range adjusting feature in the game, so dudes could sing songs from these bands without sucking their balls up into their throats.

When it comes to games like what Rock Band is shaping up to be, if GH is any indication, many of my female friends love the game style. Many of them have always complained that singing wasn't enabled. But! Now we have the majesty of Rock Band, and now they can sing while me and the remainder of our friends thrash wildly and suggestively. The dream comes closer to reality.

But, what's this about there not being enough female vocalists? Much less good ones? Come and look at the list I have compiled, surely there are a few that many would enjoy in the game?

Grace Slick (Jefferson Airplane)
Ann Wilson (Heart)
Stevie Nicks (Fleetwood Mac)
Pat Benatar
Debbie Harry (Blondie)
Annie Lennox (Eurythmics)
Kim Gordon (Sonic Youth)
Chrissie Hynde (The Pretenders)
Nico (Velevet Underground)
Delores O'Riordan (Cranberries)
Shirley Manson (Garbage)
Christina Scabbia (Lacuna Coil)
Sheryl Crow
Kat Bjelland (Babes In Toyland)
Christine McVie (Fleetwood Mac)
Lita Ford
Joan Jett (Blackhearts)
Siouxsie Sioux (Siouxsie & the Banshees)
Karen O (Yeah Yeah Yeahs)
Gwen Stefani (No Doubt)
Nina Gordon (Veruca Salt, Solo)
Beth Gibbons (Portishead)
Susanna Hoffs (Bangles)
Nancy Wilson (Heart)
Doro Pesch (Warlock)
Linda Perry(4 Non Blondes)
Carrie Akre (Hammerbox)
Amy Lee (Evanescence)
Harriet Wheeler (The Sundays)
Jonnette Napolitano (Concrete Blonde)
Signe Anderson (Jefferson Airplane, '65-'66)
Margo Timmins (Cowboy Junkies)
Courtney Love (Hole)

And I have more my friends.

So there should be no concern that there are not enough female vocalists for people to rock out with.

Keep rockin'!

and leting you sing down or up an octive from the real song may bring relief to a lot of people who have been complaining about female vocals in the song...i doubt they'll take that away...that would make singing some songs impossible for the singer of the band..especially if he or she has a very small range

The reason I suggested stuff like "Broken" from Seether and Amy Lee or Kid Rock and Sheryl Crow duet songs, is becasue we have a female vocalist that's going to be in our band. She is really good and has a lot of fun playing GH2 with us, so just thought it would be fun to have some good female vocalist songs available for DLC.

Strictly based on my experience with Karaoke games, it's a lot eaiser to get a female to pic up a mic and play than a guy. And the guys who are readily willing to sing usually have no problem singing female vocals either. As far as Rock band goes, the guys I know are really psyched about having the drums, and the girls want to do the singing. When I saw the songlist for the game I was pretty disappointed there weren't any female vocals since, as far as I can tell, women are more likely to enjoy that aspect of the game.

That said I think there have been a lot of great suggestions. I'd like to add a couple of my favorite rock songs with femal vocalists which haven't been mentioned yet:

Nena - 99 Luftballons
Big Pig - I Can't Break Away
Melissa Etheridge - I'm The Only One
Tia Carrere - Ballroom Blitz (If you've never heard of this it's at the end of the movie Wayne's World.)

Girls can look cool sounding like a man but, Men can't sound cool sounding like women.

What about Robert Plant? There is a reason why Ann Wilson covered so much Zeppelin on stage.. Listen To Hearts rendition of Battle of Evermore.. Brilliant.

And lets face it.. Most chick singers don't rock.. There are few that do.. I love Stevie Nicks.. But that don't mean it ROCKS!!!! My wife sang in bands for years... No what she sang? Maiden, Preist, Ozzy and Zeppelin and the like. She will be the first to tell you that most women don't rock enough and front bands that are weenyish.

Be Your Own Pet - Girls On TV Hell yeah, Be Your Own Pet are awesome. I would rather have Electric Shake, but Girls on TV is a great choice.

Sonic Youth - Brother James or Drunken Butterfly (Though I'd still rather see Silver Rocket)

there are about a million 100 lists of top female vocalists. it's shortsighted to think that woman aren't going to play this game, or want to sing songs by women. if they were not a consideration why have female characters? i'm female, i sing, and having to try and match my pitch to grown men with raspy voices is deadly. sting i can do, the female part of gimmie shelter, no problem, but seriously, mississippi queen? what is someone supposed to do with that?

there are so many female artists it just borders on insulting that - i mean the beastie boys, who don't even sing or as i recall really play instruments have a song. nine inch nails? trent renzor? who i do love, man makes everything electronically - they can find more women.

It will count the same note in any octave, so I really haven't found any song to be a problem simply because it's sang in a man's register. You can even jump octaves mid-phrase if it's going to out of your range. I don't find it insulting.

I am shocked that I have yet to see Patti Smith listed. Someone listed the 10k maniacs crappy cover of her "because the night". Obviously her most famous song is a little too vulgar, but the woman was inducted into the hall of fame for god sake. And as a man, and a vocalist...I have no problems singing female songs. If you feel G**, you might have to look a little inside at the real issue. In fact, my favorite kareoke song to sing in public is No Doubt "I'm just a girl".

The problem is that there are an extreme obscure ammount of rock bands with a female lead singer. Very few actually: Flyleaf, and Avril Lavigne, and I can barely label them rock and that's all I can do off hand without research. Announced songs that don't include a female vocalist doesn't make the game sexist or anything. It just means that if you want a female vocalist then you start a band make a record sell it request it and hopefully it will be implemented into the game. There just aren't many rock bands with women as the lead singer which is required if you want a female vocalist.

Are you kidding? Maybe that was true 30-40 years ago. There a lot more than this game would make you believe however, as many have been listed. Not to mention a good amount of female vocalists have been huge; Janis Joplin, Grace Slick (Jefferson airplane}, Patti Smith, Nancy Wilson (Heart), Stevie Nicks (fleetwood mac), Debbie Harry (Blondie). All very rock, all could be considered classic rock, except maybe Blondie. Female vocalist aren't obscure just because you have not heard of them. I won't even create a list of newer ones because that will take forever. They are out there and a good many are prominent in their respected music scenes.

I would personally like to see some PJ Harvey. She rocks.

There is little chance of there being many songs in the game fronted by women.

and you gotta imagine there won't be as many women playing this game as men once it comes out.

Funny, the only friends of mine who are eager to do vocals are female. And that's everything from Hole to Metallica.

There are a few female fronted bands I can think of that would work well, in addition to Janis, Jefferson Airplane, and the others mentioned. How about we get some Otep in the game? We have Metallica and a few other metal bands, but not much in the way of newer stuff. Lacuna Coil would be great too, granted it's in the "other" game already. Arch Enemy is another one...

Going back to the 90's there were a ton of female fronted alternative bands, and in the 80's there were plenty of new wave bands with female vocalists.

Lacuna Coil, Evanessence, No Doubt would be great additions to the song list.

Also I'd really love to be able to have You Oughta Know by Alanis Morisette.. that song is complete 90's nostalgia and would be awesome to get to sing in rock band.

As far as I know I meant. I couldn't name as many unless you start naming stuff like Kelly Clarkson, Ashlee Simpson. Just pop bands.

What I can't understand is some of the female songs they picked over others, wtf is the Yeah yeah yeah's doing on here when there could be Heart, or Blondie, or Lita Ford, or whatever. I like the song but it's sort of repetitive and boring for a game. I didn't even know half of the female bands they did put on here. I really don't see why it should be an issue that they have the same song on two separate games, I mean they did it with the Killers (I think), and they definitely did it with Cherub Rock. Why not Crazy on You? And to say none of the potential female choices are good enough for rock band is just absurd. I mean look at the current song list for god's sake. Ok GO? Nine Inch Nails? Fall Out Boy? Coheed and Cambria?? I rest my case.

There is a thread with some pretty good ideas for songs with female lead.

Heart is about all I can really think of too as far as one that I like, and think would fit the game well.

I would have to agree with this. As far as I can tell, especially from the female vocal songs already in Rock Band, the songs are more laid back, more simplistic and, in the case of "Maps", just downright annoying.

Heart on the other hand, actually has some serious instrument playing, instead of just melodies. I would most certainly download a Heart Pack, or at least a couple songs from it, because I know of them. Pretty much nobody else. Just my knowledge of female fronted bands though.
