Just some quick suggestions would be helpful to me.
I have to write a short story, essay, or poem expressing grateful appreciation of something or someone. Any ideas on what to write about? I'm always blank when it comes to personal experiences like that.

I guess I could use my dad, but it sounds kind of corny. I guess anything at all I write about will end up sounding corny.

Write an obscenely long essay about your appreciation for Dave Grohl.

I think I'm going to with just my dad. I don't even have a dog. I'm not on that level with most relatives. An iPod would sound material-possession hungry, which doesn't bother me but it will put a bad connotation in my teacher's mind and therefore a worse grade.
Haha, Dave Grohl...
Maybe I could do The Beatles? Ever since I discovered them, I've been hooked and have really made things better.

If someone's music has influenced your life in a positive way, that would be a rather inspired topic. But it's pretty risky and you'd probably get a higher grade and just have more to write about with someone you personally know.

I don't know, I see some good points about it. I know my teacher likes them, as when I wore a shirt she said "good band". Also, writing about a parent seems pretty cliche.
The only problem, I don't see how they have inspired me. They just made me appreciate music even more, and realize the timelessness in music and how it can still and will always be relevant in modern day.
Which do you all think? Beatles or dad?

I agree with citric_bullets about trying something 'riskier'... you cared enough to actually ask what to write about, so you might as well go for something that you don't feel is 'corny'.
The Beatles or a band is one route but if you're worried about having trouble coming up with things to write, I'd just think of the assignment as "Who do you admire?" and write about someone you know a lot about. Then sort of work in the 'gratitude' regarding how they've made you become a better person, dream big, persevere in hard times, discover a rewarding hobby, etc.

Honestly, I don't have anybody like that in my life.

You're obviously more familiar with your assignment than I am, but I think you're making it more difficult than it is.
I don't know why your avatar is Alfonso Ribeiro but you could literally even write a short poem about how his antics as Carlton on the Fresh Prince brightened many a dreary day (yes, bad example but you get what I mean).

Yeah, I see what you mean, but people in my life don't really do that to me...
I think I'm going to take my risks with The Beatles. It's not a large assignment. It's not like a major essay or anything, and it will probably just be a homework grade and she might even just grade it on whether we did it or not.

Girlfriend?
Parents?
Brother?
Sister?
Friend?
There's a lot. Choose from the list. ^

If only I had a girlfriend.
I'm only in 10th grade here, guys. It was nothing huge. I decided to make it on The Beatles, and how their appreciation has spread throughout the world.
