The Call of Duty franchise is already split between two studios, Infinity Ward and Treyarch, but an LA Times report seems to hint the series may soon be taken roughly by a third. The report also claims that an MMO based on the Call of Duty universe is being considered.
"As Activision seems to be discovering this year with Guitar Hero, there's danger when a title is overexposed with too many iterations," explains the report. "Nonetheless, the publisher has aggressive expansion plans for Call of Duty. Although Infinity Ward and Treyarch have produced sequels in alternating years since 2005, the publisher now has a third development studio working on future versions.
"One person close to the company said it also was considering adapting Call of Duty as a massively multi-player online world. The genre, in which Activision's Blizzard Entertainment subsidiary is a leader, requires huge upfront investments but can be very profitable as players pay a monthly subscription fee."
Talk of a Call of Duty MMO is nothing new, although the idea of a third studio creating games is interesting. Perhaps the third studio can do ones set in the future or something. It's bound to happen sooner or later.

Though it is a rumor still, Just go ahead and believe it. Seriously, Activision and their money hungry problems, I can totally see them doing it. Do they need to? Absolutely not. Will they? Most likely.

Yes I did hear. No I am not surprised. I will also not be suprised when there is COD MW3, COD Ancient Warfare, Cod Colonial Revolution, and Cod WAW 2 coming out next year.

Well MW3 wouldn't come out next year anyways. Since the rotation is Infinity Ward then Treyarch. Everyone should know Treyarch is most likely going to release another CoD game next year... It'll probably be another WWII game, It'll suck just because it's another WWII game.

Actually I head next year's CoD is going to be set in Vietnam and as you said will be developed by Treyarch (Activision's little *****es).

This is what i heard too.
I guess Vietnam would be okay... But I really wish a COD would be all about Japan, first. I don't get dropping the WWII idea and going on to another war. And why go to Vietnam? I think we should have a Colonial Revolution and American CIvil War game! :D

There was a Half Life 2 mod based on the colonial era I think. The problem with AWI or ACW is technology. For the most part firearms weren't repeat use items and turned in to clubs after only a couple of volleys. For that reason I don't think we'll see an FPS-alike game of this era, shame. :(

I could see A Call of Duty: Warfare Evolved, and you do every major war ever. Playing as a family whose fought in war to war from generation to generation.

Empire Earth? As close as you'll get and I don't think it'll be a FPS-alike game. Canae and Guagemala would require a completely different engine to Hastings let alone Iraq! Dream game but think it's all it would be :(

Hopefully this third studio will do a better job than the one that did MW2. The game has not been much better than the original MW and I actually preferred the story and multiplayer of WaW much better.

The faster they crank out these games, the faster the prices drop on the old ones. That gets a thumbs up from me.
I might buy a Vietnam one on day one though, if they do it right. With console graphics where they are now, it ought to work better than when the Conflict series tried to do it on the old Xbox. You need some good processing power to do jungles.

Um, I could've sworn that Infinity Ward stopped letting Treyarch making CoD games after they consantly promoted WaW as being seperate from the series.

This could be a good thing, or it could be a bad thing. On one hand, they could continue with the switching developers every year, and each developer would have another year to work on the game, leading to better quality. OR, they could start releasing two a year. Hopefully they go with the first option, but I'm not expecting that out of Activision.

I can't possibly see them giving a three year development cycle to each developer. It's unnecessary when the engine is already in place, and is a complete waste of money. If I were to hazard a guess, this third company will either be pumping out yearly installments, or maybe something every year and a half, while Infinity Ward and Treyarch continue with their two year cycles.

It'll probably be another WWII game, It'll suck just because it's another WWII game.
People wonder why there are a ton of WWII shooters. The reason? It works. The guns are so easy to balance and the pace is enjoyable to most people. I went from BF 1943 to BF: BC and found it to be a worse game despite having another game mode (and I liked gold rush). When the rifles are automatic, the snipers semi auto and the machine guns hold 150 shots gameplay is fundamentally different.
Attacking is much harder to do because once you are in the enemy's sights you are dead. In 1943 you have a chance because the tommy gun has bad accuracy over the distance, the rifle is slow firing and the sniper is even slower. This means you either have to die a lot or play much slower.
How true this is for COD I don't know but I imagine it's the same.

It may work, but I'm pretty sure there's A LOT of people who are just sick and tired of WWII video games. Medal of Honor did them to death, IW only did like 3 games, but Treyarch still decides to do another WWII game. I know I'm personally sick of them.

IW did only the first two CODs and then moved to the Modern Warfare series.

Oh, well, still.
Treyarch still did Call of Duty 2: Big Red One as well.

I think we should have a Colonial Revolution and American CIvil War game! :D
I don't think people want to wait 30 seconds between shots, shots that won't be accurate beyond 20 feet.
There was an unofficial Revolutionary War mod for Half Life some time ago. The realism didn't lend itself to great gameplay.
I do hope they get out of WWII though. To a certain effect I think the continued re-hashing cheapens the heroics and deeds of the real soldiers of that era.

If they do an American Civil War game, will they allow the use of the drum peripherals so you can play as the drummer boy while you march in formation?

How was halo ever overdone? Halo has a total of like... 5....6 games. (Halo, Halo 2, Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST and Halo Wars and the upcoming Halo: Reach.)
