New top 3 midnight box office openings:

1 The Twilight Saga: New Moon ($26.2 million)
2 Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince ($22.2 million)
3 The Dark Knight ($18.4 million)

Society, I hate you.

This.

I saw a commercial at work the other day(since I don't have TV anymore) and it looks like the werewolves change whenever the hell they feel like it. I already had very little respect for the series(not a saga!) but that just made me hate them.

Hey hey let's not go crazy. The werewolves in Vampire the Masquerade can change at will too and they are way badass. This movie sucks all on it's own without having to diminish other fictional works.

That's unexpected. I had no idea Twilight was that popular.

Also, on the subject of Twilight hate, I can guarantee that, at the very least, 50% of the people who bash Twilight haven't seen or read nearly enough to form a true opinion. And that's being generous.

It really is the case with most anything popular to that extreme these days....

It's got no shot at The Dark Knight's record. I'm guessing it will do something like 60 million today and maybe 45 the rest of the weekend. It's gonna be frontloaded as can be, since everyone that really wants to see it probably already has or will today.

Also yes, f*** society. The whole Twilight series is total garbage

I remain hopeful for our future, and maintain that Batman will once again triumph over the forces of evil. I can't imagine any circumstances in which New Moon will top Dark Knight's weekend record. Teenage girls simply aren't the majority of theater goers.

I haven't read the books, I made my friend who has actually read enough books to be able to adequately judge how good a book is do it instead. Okay she did it voluntarily, but I've assumed her opinion as my own, because I've read like 5 books ever. So the official stance of the office of citric_bullets is that Twilight is "mysteriously addictive, in spite of it's abysmal writing and vapid characters"

Once again, that is just the opinion of the one of the few people whose opinions on books I actually respect and refer to.

This is what I don't get:
This series, the books as well as the movies, is aimed at 'tweens.' I'll be one adult to admit I was sucked in too... altho I think I devoured the books in hopes of finally getting to the action they seemed to promise.
Why waste your time even having an opinion on something not aimed at entertaining you in the first place, let alone ranting and raving about how much you hate it?
People try so hard to "be different" being different isn't different anymore!

If you look at the biggest opening weekend box office totals (http://boxofficemojo.com/alltime/weekends/) the big films are blockbuster nerd movies (Batman, Spider Man, Transformers, Star Wars, Pirates of the Caribbean, Iron Man) and family pictures (Shrek, Harry Potter). Teenage girls don't have the same disposable income as the die hard fanboys, and family movies succeed because it's a guaranteed multiple ticket sale. I just don't think New Moon has the right kind of pull on the people with the money, time and dedication to rake in that kind of money.

same thing with transformers

The special effects in Transformers 2 wasn't even that good.

Few notes: (Most of these were formulated after reading the first two pages.)

They're not werewolves. M'kay? Also, those aren't vampires. What's with Stephanie using those words to describe her creatures when they're pretty much nothing like the words she's using to describe them. She could've at least made up some silly names for her own creatures.

Lots of ADULT women are seeing this movie, either because they are just as dense as the tweens that watched the first one, or because they wanted to see the tan naked boy. I know MY mom does.

Special effects? The only cool special effect I liked was the transforming into wolf parts. and even that wasn't that cool. But, the wolves at least look furry, and I'd like to hug one if one were real.

The main characters seem to have gotten much uglier since the last movie. Seriously? Did they start doing meth or just hire cruddy makeup artists like the previous movie?

---

I've seen the first movie and read bits of the books. It's horrible, and that's my formulated opinion. I think Stephanie Meyer is a money grubbing ______ for turning the series into a movie, when the movies are worse than the books themselves. Has she no shame? or love for her series? She's just making people outside of the Twilight vibe to hate it more than they already did. But, I suppose it IS a good publicity stunt.

I'm just glad this fad will be over within a couple of years. I mean it can't drag on as much as Harry Potter, and at least HP is a decent series, but even it is starting to get on my nerves with so many books/movies. I stopped watching after awhile and now I am confused as to which movie is which.

By the way, just in case you actually have respect for this series: the third one, Eclipse, is coming out in June next year. This is a clear indication of movie executives seeing the pattern and trying to milk the franchise for all its worth before the hype dies. I agree. It makes sense though. I went to the local mall on Monday. Both Suncoast and Hot Topic were full of Twilight/New Moon stuff. When I was walking out of Hot Topic this woman had her cellphone out and was taking pics of this display Hot Topic had sitting in the window of that werewolf guy from New Moon and the sparkly vampire dude. I thought it was weird.

True. I haven't read any of the books, or seen the first movie... nor want to for that matter. But I'm not going to make an opinion on this; all I will say though for a fact, is, wow.

New top 3 midnight box office openings:

1 The Twilight Saga: New Moon ($26.2 million)
2 Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince ($22.2 million)
3 The Dark Knight ($18.4 million)

The current one-day record is held by The Dark Knight at $67.1 million. New Moon is expected to break that record also and then gun for TDK's weekend record of $158.4 million.

Damn. It's over Harry Potter and Dark Knight. Both movies were awesome.

Off-topic, but nah, it wasn't that. I think you're thinking of Wii Sports.

When the Wii first came out, Wiimotes were not available for sale individually yet. So since the Wii console only came with one, a crapton of people bought Wii Play because it came with a Wiimote and that was the only way to get a 2nd one at the time.

My view of that might have been skewed by the availability (or lack thereof) of standalone Wiimotes in my area. :)

But I might also just be mistaking that with the fact that Wii Play only cost a few dollars more than a standalone Wiimote, so people bought it to basically get a free game with their 2nd controller.

I imagine it's more because book 7 was really really long, and there really isn't a whole lot of the plot you can just chop out to make a movie (like they've done with the others).

So it's either: 2 movies, or one 7-hour-long movie, which nobody would go to.

Because they probably found it more cost-effective to cut parts out than split it. But that has clearly changed. Won't be surprised if the Twilight series tries the same thing at some point, but I'm not a 100% on if any of the books even LOOK like that would be necessary.

I have a few friends who went to see Twilight at the midnight showing. I asked why they didn't go to the theater they usually go to, and the reply was that it had been sold out for months. Probably an exaggeration, but this movie definitely had some pull and hype behind it.

One of those friends loves, loves, LOVES the books..but she hated the first movie. Take that as you will. Another friend who loves the books (and reads about a book a week) hated the second movie after seeing it at midnight. I also know girls who have enjoyed the first movie and love the books. *shrugs*

I never read the books, but I did see the first movie. I will admit I enjoyed the first part of it for what it was, and I actually started digging all the side characters. It was amusing as one of those dumb high school drama movies. Then the vampires were introduced...and it went downhill. The acting, plot, pacing and script seemed to feel elementary and vapid. Not much depth, awkward transitions and dialogue...it was just bad cinematically.

Not my cup of tea, and won't see the 2nd unless someone puts it up on the TV while I'm playing games or something.

My god. I hate today's generation.

I don't think you can point the finger squarely at today's generation. Twilight is at its core a chaste (dare I say Mormonized, considering the background of the author?) version of a romance novel, with supernatural elements thrown in. It's a wish-fulfillment fantasy of an author looking back on her teen years and making up a story about how they should have been. The reason why the books and movie sell so well is because there are women of all ages who identify with this.

They're not looking for a decent plot, or quality writing/acting/filmmaking (things which you certainly won't find in Twilight), they're looking to escape into a simple fantasy for a few hours. Speaking very generally, going to see a Twilight movie is the romantic equivalent of going to a big explosion-filled action movie. The main reason why you're seeing Twilight get even more flak than the average brainless Michael Bay movie is that its appeal outside of the target audience is extremely limited, if not nonexistent.

So even though I'll avoid New Moon like the plague because I know I'm not part of the target audience and will not enjoy it one bit if I would watch it, I can't say it really bothers me either. It's a cheap romance novel turned movie, but it doesn't pretend to be more than that (the only people who might claim that are the obsessive fans, who are not exactly a credible source of information anyway).
Meyer is a pretty poor writer, but as far as I know she never pretended her books were deep or great literature, unlike certain other hacks out there *coughcoughdanbrowncoughcough*.

That being said, I do pity all the guys out there who end up dating someone who thinks Edward is the perfect man. Having a creepy obsessive stalker with passive-aggressive tendencies as a romantic ideal doesn't seem all that healthy.

Girls purposefully ignore this. Or at least mines does. You bring up the obvious like the potential for bestiality between a human and "werewolf" (I use that term lightly), or the creepy notion of a vampire chilling out in high schools for a century? It's ignored.

That, or you get the look that means either shut up or it's nothing for you for the next couple of days.

I got my girlfriend started on The Anne Rice Books after these, and she admits that she would've hated the twilight series if she would have read those first.

As for this movie, I really hate hating on series that people absolutely love, but this one... it's hard not to.

New Moon makes $140.7 million over the weekend, good for 3rd all-time

I'm glad someone else shares my opinion of Dan Brown. I got about 2/3 of the way through Angels and Demons and pretty much just gave up. The plot was interesting enough (exciting things were happening at an acceptable pace), but his writing was just painfully simple.

Also, I've wrapped my mind around the notion that the Twilight phenom is really just a safe romance novel. It just concerns me because I've personally seen girls read these books, become obsessed with the backwards ideas of romantic relationships presented in them, and then proceed to go out and completely muck up their actual relationships.

I've posted some massive rants about Brown on here in the past. To call his writing 'painfully simple' is a compliment he doesn't even deserve. 'Mangling the English language in second-rate potboilers' is a more fitting term.

As for those girls you mention, maybe we should consider the fact that they keep themselves from having a decent relationship by behaving in such a manner an example of social Darwinism? :D
