This is our first try.... lol
Sorry, I actually messed up in parts, but kept going...
Which part anyway? We may do a re-do when we nail it.
Edit: Oh, lol, like everything is in different tempos right? Yeah... we'll fix that with the next song hopefully!

When the distortion kicks in..
Might want to invest in a bluetooth metronome,
It helps alot during band practice.

Yep, I edited my post right as you posted!
Also, actually it was always at the same level, I used my hand to get the sound at the beginning.
It definitely does help, we will focus more on it next time, thanks! :)

I'm not sure, he might have gotten confused, I messed with those riffs so many times, he might have started a previous beat to a riff I made up. :(
You guys are being really nice, I horribly screwed up at 0:46...
I wasn't supposed to do it again! NOOOO!! I ruined like the whole intro there.
Also, my pick was starting to slip so at 1:36 during Jonathon's fill I just held a chord and corrected it.
I would think that you guys would have complained. Thanks! :)

If I were you, I'd just do the vocals myself, unless you can find a dedicated singer. Still, in my experience, everyone gets along better if they all play an instrument... sometime a dedicated singer can be left out of a jam session, for instance.

I think if you have some effect pedal, either a reverb or delay pedal, it would fit nicely in that intro. I'm not gonna lie, it needs some work but it's not horrible, keep at it!
Oh and nice, I used to have a whole band set up in my room( a 4 piece) and my bed was a few pillows...oh the sacrifice for music :)

Is there some decent christian rock you can cover, for practice?
Also, isn't the point of christian rock to praise "the lord", otherwise it's "devil music"? You need vocals to do the praising, I think. I'm no expert, though.
Good luck, and you're very brave to try to write your own music and also to post it for public review. I hope that you get where intended before giving up.

Well, we aren't really doing that stuff at church and everything. Just whatever feels right to us.
I actually made up the intro on accident, I started playing some frets but my hand was doing something weird to make it sound like that, but we thought it was cool so we tweaked it and went with it!
Were never going to give up, honestly, I was expecting more hate and everything, but everyone was really good about it giving us real help! :)
But, we don't know what kind of sound we have, and I think we will have to wait to get a vocalist to really narrow it down!

Have more range than Nickleback and less range than Phish... (Unless the 'Phish' thing works for you)
As far a sound, It won't matter as long as you don't go too far out of your respected genre.. eg: don't throw a hip-hop song in a metal album.

Nailed To The Cross is a really weird name for a Christian Band. It's religious sure, but it just sounds like it would be taken as really offensive to other Christian people.

I assume it's Jesus who is being nailed. Why don't you do some brainstorming and work out a name around why he was nailed and died for your sins, rather than the actual act of him being nailed and suffering all of that pain.
I just feel that if you want to go anywhere with your band, and you want the Christian community to follow you, this would be for the best.

The drummer was going for "Christian Mythology"
He really wanted something greek (I'm 50% Greek and lived their for 5 years, I don't know if that's why or what) or something christian.
This was a compromise...
Other band names I made up were, Request an Audience, Human Wings, 5 More Hours, Taking a Chance, and Shining Ash.

You may think you're being such a great person being all "Yeah! That was great! Good job!", but you're dead wrong. If He were to go out and make an album today, he'd be laughed out of the music world indefinitely. You are the kind of person who puts WIlliam Hungs on American idol. Tell him what he NEEDS to hear, not what he WANTS to hear.
EDIT: That goes for the band name, too. Nailed to the Cross is going to raise eyebrows in a lot of Universal Christian/Born-Again Christian Churches (main venues for Christian acts, at least in my area) and those others are either lolgeneric or weird as hell,a nd he'll regret any of those down the line.
yeah, Nailed to the Cross sounds more sacrilegious to me

The drumming needs some work. Scrap the jam at the end, or have some better timing with it. He also needs work on timing, wicked fills don't make a drummer good, it's keeping time that makes a drummer good. That opening guitar riff also seems kinda boring, so add some distortion to it. Other than that, pretty decent first try.

Thanks, I actually already modified it a little so that it is actually two different things that are essentially the same and being played one after another for the time, and I cut it off earlier and change it to something else (it's a secret!)
I'll let him know about this drumming stuff, and at the end I am going to actually just go through like a pentatonic scale a little fast and we'll have a metronome practicing it and everything.
at the end I was thinking of doing the first riff but only once and just extending it to a close!

In my experience, questioning high school principals about the reason behind their decisions isn't that productive. Many of them have too much of an authority trip going on and don't like kids questioning them. Yours might be different, though.
My advice would be word of mouth... spread the word that you're looking for a bassist and a drummer to friends and other people you know. That's usually a good way to get in touch with people. You could also try and put up notices in practice spaces around your city (if their are any), but make sure to add the maximum age of the people you're looking for.

The last couple of DT albums notwithstanding, I still consider Portnoy more of a prog drummer than a metal drummer (of course he's both, but in terms of which side is more prevalent). His style blends in more easily in a prog rock band than any member of Epica would, I think, other than maybe Simone if she stays away from the opera vocals (which would be an utter waste). Now switch out Epica with Opeth, and I can actually see it working (that and I think the voices of Jan Hendrik Ohme and Mikael Åkerfeldt would go really, really well together).

Negative criticism is ridiculously easy. Anyone with half a brain and the ability to type can bash something online. Criticism in a thread like this only attains some worth if it's actually constructive. Why not offer suggestions on how to improve what you didn't like about the song and band (and band name) instead? Assuming that you want to help the OP get better instead of just making him feel bad about his hobby, of course.
Ultimatum
11-23-2009, 09:18 PM
Yeah, I was abrasive, my bad.
Anywho, I still stand by the criticism that the song really, desperately needs dynamics. It feels its on a plateau throughout the entire duration, and that drummer isn't really on the same level and is way off in fairyland doing his own thing that doesn't really fit. He's also very stiff, have him loosen his grip, I can feel and hear it and it's not very pleasant. Tell him to focus on laying down the rhythm, that's his job. He can worry about flashy fills when the song calls for it, and it never really called for it.
If you're going to go with the whole one-dimensional thing, then you really have to be at the extreme ends of the spectrum. It's sort of in the middle. This is really a difficult concept to grasp, especially for fledgling musicians, so don't worry about it so much.

Read my comment, I'm MysticGuitar77.
Really what I feel it comes down to, is that both of you still need some practice at your instrument. The drummer needs to really work on timing and should try to contain himself from crazy out-of-timing and awkward fills. For you as a guitar player, you also need some more practice with cleaning it up a bit. It sounds like you still need to work on building finger strength. As long as you keep at it, finger strength will come in time.
And I also suggest you guys click on a metronome when you jam next time ;)

It wasn't too bad, but timing and transitioning are big things you need to work on. I like some of the stuff you and the drummer were doing but there was no connection in most of the stuff you guys played. The timing generally stink, but that transition and some of the indulgence in fills led to that. The drummer often choose tasteful stuff to play, but the fill near the one minute mark needs to either go or he needs to modify it to work it into the context of the song. The one thing that jumped out the most was the transitions. Some cool playing going on but the transitions were nonexistent and make the "song" difficult to listen to. I would work on those two things the most while recruiting a bassist and a singer for your guys' band.
That post ringed out pretty negatively, but eh, I think there's potential for a good song(s) in that video, and as you guys improve as a band you probably make even better material. Just need to work on timing and transition.

I don't mean to be to brutal with you guys, but I'm just saying that if I were to see the name "Nailed To The Cross" on a tour, I'd definitely be interested (being a metalhead), then be let down because the message a good amount of people will get is that you guys are Satanic. I mean, look at some song titles for Deicide or Vital Remains...
Once Upon The Cross
Slave To The Cross (for the hardcore Christian band)
The Truth Above
Crucified For The Innocence
I Am God
Hammer Down The Nails
etc etc
In one way or another people could at those titles, unaware of the band, and think they could be Pro-Christian songs, but they aren't, and for me, coming from this style of music makes me think that a band named "Nailed To The Cross" is quite evil.

Anyone has the potential to make good music it just requires a few things:
1) Desire to break or reshape the mold
2) Open-mindedness towards all kinds of music
3) A wide range of influences (the wider, the better)
4) A somewhat focused approach
5) Some proficiency on your respective instrument(s)

I'm glad my band lucked out with the bassist, who insists he's not realy with the band, but always wants to know when our next practice is. :D

Pretty good. You could work on getting your timing down; some of those crash hits seemed awkward. Great fills, and nice hat.

Thanks man! Yeah, I'm going to bring my metronome next time and we'll make sure we stay on time!
I'll let the drummer know! He'll be really happy to know someone liked his fills! (and his hat :p)

Your drummer really needs to work on timing. Really, the most basic job of a drummer is to keep the rest of the band on time. If the drummer can't stay on time, the rest of the band isn't going to either. A metronome is a good idea for your next jam session.

I agree with Gowie here. IMO I think that one-name (or two name) bands usually end up more popular. It's eaiser to remember. Plus Zeus sounds cool.

I think request an audience is the best. I don't know, I just like it.

They sound more like a metal band. Request an Audience (to me) sounds like a name for a pop-punk band.

But is your band gonna be more along the lines of metal or punk? If punk, I'd go with Request an Audience. If metal, go with Zeus.
For some reason, when ever I see Request an Audience, I think immeadiatly of Rise Against. Maybe it's the R and the A?

Really?
Well probably because of the RA and their song Audience of One
But I DO have proof I made up the name before they even made their new album!
If you want I can link you to this old thread where the name was a suggestion of mine before the album!

I'm not sure what sound we are going for yet.
I would rather not be indie rock but people say we sound like it. :(

Still, I liked the song:D

I wouldn't even attempt it.
Thats something that can ruin a band it it's not perfect.
Like when I saw Suicide Silence in concert last summer. His squeels were annoying..

Steam Punk.
Which probably is already taken.
Nailed to the Cross sounds too "shock-rock"

Thanks! I just finished making up a new song on guitar! (that's what I've been working on the past few days) and I like it better than our previous one!
I'm hoping tomorrow I can go to Jonathon's house and we can record another song! I'm going to use one of the names above as the song title! It's going to be a surprise!
I like Request an Audience too, okay, post below if you want our name to be Request an Audience or Nailed to the Cross (or something else)

It says a reason when your banned when you try to go to the forums
Also, we are seriously thinking of changing the name to Request an Audience, I'm actually heavily leaning toward it!
