Both extremely influential and skillful guitar players who were both members of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. So who is a better guitarist?

Frusciante. Dave's playing isn't all that interesting to me

Navarro has clearly the better experimentation and roughness, although Frusciante has a more traditional and clean aesthetic.

I prefer the former.

I like Hillel Slovak the best out of the RCHP's guitarist criteria, though.

Not fond of either guitarist, but Dave seems to think more outside the box in his guitar playing which makes his work sound interesting.

Navarro, by far. I don't think Frusciante ever played anything as awesome Ocean Size. Now, I'm not usually one for complexity in music for the hell of it, but those are some sick solos.

I voted AGAINST navarro out of simple virtue that Dave Navarro is one of the biggest douche bags in music

So is Billy Corgan, I'll still buy his records.

yes but Corgan is not anywhere close to being considered a guitar ace that Navarro may--MAY!--be....and he wasn't in the poll, now, was he?

Both have emmense skill with the Guitar.

Personality be damned, I respect Navarros guitar playing more.

The thread isn't about Navarro's personality. That was my point.

it's a matter of degree. when it comes to the two guitarists in question, I, in my estimation, think the comparison comes down to more principled reasons. Navarro's douche-baggery is considerably disproportionate to his guitar-playing skills, whereas the same is not true for Frusciante.

ding, dong...good night

Which really doesn't make sense. By this logic, I should boycott anything that Varg Vikernes was involved with. I suppose we should discount Beethoven because he was occasionally stuck up about his music?

Besides, you haven't even said what you hate so much about him.

Frusciante by a mile and a half.

I am not really familiar with a lot of their works to judge, but from what little I've heard I dig John just a bit more.

I like Frusciante's work in RHCP better. I can't really say which is better though.

I may as well ask here:

A friend of mine and I were wondering if Frusciante's solo stuff is worth checking out. He's heard some things, but neither of us are entirely sure ourselves. Would you recommend any of it?

I wasn't being that serious. Was on a tail-end of a 12-pack.

on point, Navarro to me isn't that great of a guitarist, but bless him for once dating Carmen Electra

Why are you guys saying that Frusciante isn't as experimental as Navarro? RHCP isn't as experimental as Jane's Addiction, maybe, but Frusciante is VERY experimental in his solo music. I voted Frusciante.

You don't like Jane's Addiction? Seriously? Your Mr. Alternative rock and you don't like one of the pioneering bands of the genre.

I love them both, but I think I prefer Dave's playing a tad more, just because of the tone of his solos.

Hillel was great, too. He's like the Johnny Ramone of funk-rock.

Frusciante, because I can't stand Jane's Addiction.
