Who's up for helping to create a setlist? In the spirit of Alternative Band (http://www.rockband.com/forums/showthread.php?t=168255), Prog Band (http://www.rockband.com/forums/showthread.php?t=167189), Glam Band (http://www.rockband.com/forums/showthread.php?t=171097), and Metal Band (http://www.rockband.com/forums/showthread.php?t=166537) - let's create a genre themed band game.

Who can participate?
Anyone.

Why the History of Rock subforum?
The setlist creation will focus on debate regarding iconic and historical music and strives to foster deeper conversation. Special attention to design elements, decade & genre discussion, and historical relevance will take place in making this setlist. The final list will be posted in the Ultimate Setlist forum.

How many songs will the setlist consist of?
84, modelled after the Rock Band 2 architecture.

Rules for song selection:
- Must have the majority of the lyrics in English.
- Must have a solid, playable trackline for all 4 instruments. (Synth can be used for guitar in some situations.)
- Must have a linkable youtube or similar hassle free way of listening.
- No more than 5 songs exceeding 7.5 minutes in play time.

Overall setlist archtiecture guide:
- 2/5th of the bands must be immediately recognizable.
- The second 2/5th of the bands must be well known in its sub-genre's circles.
- the final 1/5th is allowed to be obscure.
- 25% of the songs must be iconic or have seen extensive radio airplay, music video play, or have been featured in film in some fashion.
- All decades must be relatively balanced, no decade should have less than 15 or more than 25 tracks, unless the music was not prevelent in the 60s, in which case it can be potentially melded with the 70s.
- No year must be too crowded. If there are 7 tracks from 1984 and no tracks from 1983 or 1985 then attempts should be made to smooth it out.
- Genre slicing and song count allocation will be decided immediately after the main theme is selected.

Who has the final say?
If there is enough interest we can vote (or have volunteers) to have 3 setlist moderators (not necessarily even me) who have final say (and if need be vote on an issue). But nothing is forever set in stone and far as Im concerned. Expect bands to drop, songs to change, and things to get moved around.

What phase is the setlist in?
Phase 3: Picking the bands & songs. Current focus in Proto-punk and music before 1976.

The setlist so far: (everything is rough draft)

1960s
The Sonics - "The Witch (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7_HiQomh_Zo&fmt=18)" - 1964 - Proto-Punk
The Stooges - "I Wanna Be Your Dog (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BJIqnXTqg8I)" - 1969 - Proto-Punk
MC5 - "Kick Out the Jams (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uwFeN0Zl1bQ)" - 1969 - Proto-Punk

1970s
New York Dolls - "Jet Boy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ItH_E6icMTU)" - 1973 - Proto-Punk
The Dictators - "Master Rock Race (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gx7liDVW4yw) - 1975 - Proto-Punk
Death - "Freakin Out (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NsBePhOL82g) - 1975 - Proto-Punk
The Modern Lovers - "Roadrunner (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TDJShMk-r88)" - 1976 - Proto-Punk

Post-Rock (and post metal) is a genre worthy of its own setlist but post-punk/hardcore would tie into alternative and/or punk setlists. Post-thrash (groove metal) in a metal setlist and post-grunge in a hard rock or radio rock setlist.

So punk band versus psychedelic band seem the forerunners. We should start considering the palette of genres to give the setlist color and life. Punk would have what? Everything from pop punk to hardcore to riot grrl Id assume, we should consider the options. Psychadelic would have everything from neo psyhedelic to shoegazing to acid rock. Poll being added...

You can get everything from the Smashing Pumpkins, Kyuss, Stone Temple Pilots, Porcupine Tree, The Flaming Lips, Opeth, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, to the Mars Volta. You're not thinking about the entire scope of pyschedelic rocks influence and how it permeates alternative rock to heavy metal.

I would say Punk Band over Psychedelic Band. It would be a bit tricky to fill up the mainstream Psychedelic stuff for the modern era.

There's plenty of mainstream psychedelic stuff that would fit. Onslaught mentioned a few bands that would fit, but there's also bands like Wolfmother, Animal Collective, Screaming Trees, Primal Scream, MGMT, The Black Lips, Phish, Mercury Rev, of Montreal, The Stone Roses, Black Mountain, The Charlatans, Kasabian, The Chemical Brothers... and that's just some of the less obscure stuff.

Onslaught_fei
11-29-2009, 08:07 PM
Obviously the 60s and 70s have a deep well of pure psychedelic but theres plenty of stuff raging from post rock, prog, shoegazing, dream pop, stoner rock, etc... that is super psych influenced. You just have to be good with the track selection to fit the theme.

Hardcore will definately have a pressense in punk band. Im sure we'd end up grouping everything from crust punk to powerviolence to melodic hardcore to even horror punk. The objective is to get the greatest and widest painting of a genre. As for grunge, Id say thats more alternative band but there are some very punk tracks by grunge bands. i.e. Ty Cobb by Soundgarden.

back_blows
11-29-2009, 08:08 PM
But if you're considering things that are influenced by Psychedelic Rock, why can't we consider things that are influenced by Punk (i.e. Grunge, Deathcore ;))?

I wouldn't.

Onslaught_fei
11-29-2009, 08:13 PM
I wouldn't.

Alright Computer had grunge in his alt band list. If you were to put tracks by grunge bands (or mainstream grunge if you wanna be a purist) in metal, alt, or punk band - as long as the track fits - I can see it happening.

11-29-2009, 08:16 PM
But if you're considering things that are influenced by Psychedelic Rock, why can't we consider things that are influenced by Punk (i.e. Grunge, Deathcore ;))?

Deathcore is far more death metal emulating than hardcore emulating. Just like thrash metal is far more speed metal emulating than punk. Of course you have more 50/50 forms of punk + thrash or what-have-you but the idea is to capture the essense of a genre. If you have 84 tracks of just pure straight punk than thats just boring. Also as far as you wanna go has to be balanced. I had hard rock bands in my metal setlist and I didnt go super far into grindcore or metalcore but the pressence is there.

Ok although was set to run another half a day Im going to declare Punk Band the glorious victor. The next step is to setup the blueprint for the fill in the dots and how we are gonna break down the compartments before it fits together.

That step is to decide how to classify things as a beginning guideline. So think of all genres, their subgenres, and the bands you think are necessary to fill in. Each genre will probably get 6 slots. Lets say we get 8 subgenres thats 8x6=48 and reserve 20 for plain punk rock itself thats around 68 with the remaining tracks left to fill in the grey area and the area we miss or what genres need more representation from then. If we have more genres or less we can go from there. 8 subgenres is an example number.

Ill start by saying we definately should have some proto punk. Stooges, MC5, etc... with the most punkesque or influential tracks.

supernova1324
11-30-2009, 11:40 PM
Let me think of a quick list:
Hardcore

punk rock
pop-punk
folk punk( not sure about this)
anarcho punk
crust punk

The only bands I can think of that are crust is Agnostic Front, Amebix, and a certain racial **** beginning with S and ending with R. (Not sure if you're allowed to say their name here).

Agnostic Front I'd probably throw in with Crossover Thrash though.

Speaking of which, can I suggest Crossover Thrash, and Skate Punk?

Onslaught_fei

We should try to list them all out and then group them with their families. Wheres street punk belong? horror punk? oi? riot grrl?

supernova1324
12-01-2009, 12:23 AM
horror punk could fit in either hardcore or punk rock. street punk could fit in the punk rock label as well.

I'm not too familiar with the others so I can't judge.

Gowienczyk
12-01-2009, 08:20 AM
Post-Hardcore is more of a movement than a genre, it encompasses everything from noise rock to "experimental" hardcore and so forth. As for Post-Punk, there's a reason there is post in the prefix. Post-Punk =/= Punk just like Post-Rock =/= Rock and so forth.

Onslaught_fei
12-01-2009, 09:15 AM
So a small amount of postpunk would be inappropriate? I did include numetal in my metal setlist, afterall.

Some early post-punk could be; yknow like Television, etc.

Onslaught_fei
12-01-2009, 09:34 PM
To start out, I guess, we'll go, in addition to Punk Rock (20):

Proto Punk (6)
Anarcho Punk (6)
Hardcore Punk (6)
Post-Punk (6)
Post-Hardcore (6)
Pop Punk (6)

I think some of these we'll grow to more than 8 or 10 overtime, I think hardcore will. Crust punk we can stick with the anarcho punk selections since crust is a subgenre of it. We can try to figure out where psychobilly and a ton of other stuff go later. Start suggesting but focus on 6 proto punk selections. I'll be updating the op.

I honestly think if there was just a Stooges and MC5 song for the 60's it would be sufficient. There were only two 60's songs in RB2 if I remember correctly. We could have songs by bands that not everyone considers to be punk, but were still heavily influential for the genre though.

Yes, that's certainly an option to consider.

Definately sounds good. Which Stooges tracks is everyones favorite? And is anyone gonna contest the choices for the other bands mentioned? Ill update this a little better and more efficiently when I get to work later.

I Wanna Be Your Dog, and No Fun were my original choices, but I'll also accept Raw Power as suggested by LegendofRock.

I say lets go with something from the Stooges' 69 album as, if Im not mistaken, it holds some historical muscle. Also we have a gap from 69 to 73? Anything landmark happen in punk rock or anything overlooked by time?

Either one of those would be great to have a Stooges song from the 60's.

A lot bands formed in that time, but it took them a while to get their first records out though. For example, New York Dolls formed in 1970, maybe 71, but didn't get their first record out until 73.

Also, I think I Wanna Be Your Dog is the best Stooges choice.

Yeah, even though I suggested "Search and Destroy," "I Wanna Be Your Dog" is probably the best choice. It's a '60s song, which we'll be hard pressed to find many of for a punk setlist, and I honestly like it more than "Search and Destroy," I was just going with the song that is probably better known.

I think Kick Out the Jams works for 69 and instant recognizibility. Ill mark draft in the Stooges with I Wanna Be Your Dog.

Motor City Is Burning is the second most recognizable track off the album, so just to pick a diff track then Jams, we could use that.

These your suggestions for late 70s? Ill start listening and finding links. I think early 70s is starting to form and gonna start looking at how the late 70s looks. Still need more pre 1975 stuff I think.

I have more suggestions for the 70's, those were just what I considered iconic, I just have to think over what songs to suggest for the rest of the decade.

Well I like to get the least about of rhythm game redudancy, personally. So far Ive listened to every track and I think Im starting to develop a taste for punk rock, at least the 70s, we'll see where it goes. Ill definately check that track out. At the end of the day though Ill just add whatever is pitched to the thread thats not contested or doesnt create a problem, which is hard to do at this point.
