This has been a really surprising year in music for me. I discovered artists i never thought i would like or listen to and one of my favourite bands had the most disappointing album of the year (Weezer - Raditude) But, here are the ones that I think deserve the recognition.
1) Dead Weather - Horehound
Who saw this one coming? i don't even think Jack White did. So unique. So awesome. best album of 2009 in my opinion.
2) Them Crooked Vultures - Them Crooked Vultures
I reiterate, who saw this one coming? Finally, someone had the balls to make a good, raw-powered rock record. Too bad it was a couple of already established rock legends that had to do it.
3) Arctic Monkeys - Humbug
Proof that these guys have some vision in their music. This album took a couple of listens to understand, but once you understand it its a thing of beauty.
4) Metric - Fantasies
My Canadian content. For me, Metric took a long long time to get into, but this album made it easy. From the introductory hypnotic Help I'm Alive, to the anthemic big rock Stadium Love, this album was a necessary addition to the list
5) Aqua - Greatest Hits
Just kidding - could you imagine?
Seriously, its gotta go to the Yeah Yeah Yeahs - It's Blitz!
From the first note i know this was going to be bigger and better than anything they've done yet. Karen-O's squeals and screams are unmatched by any other singer. The energy on this album is undeniable and makes it worth listening to over and over agian.
Honerable Mention!!
Where The Wild Things Are Soundtrack
Never has a soundtrack ever matched up with a movie with such congruency. The match-up of Spike Jonze and Karen-O was perfect from the get go. Though I'm sure the soundtrack by itself would sound a bit off, if you have seen the movie and then listen to it, you can't help but feel like a little kid again.

why is the albums of 2009 thread in the history of rock forum and not the album review forum...these are albums we are talking about.
plus theres millions of threads and to go through them all would take forever. who cares if theres 2 threads?

The two albums that really stood out to me this year are The Horrors - Primary Colours and Sonic Youth - The Eternal.
Primary Colours was a huge surprise for me because the sound just seemed so different compared to earlier stuff by The Horrors. This album was quite catchy in a moods-created-by-sounds kind of way. There is a good level of ambience to the songs while still having an almost post-punk vibe to it. The album also sounds fairly cohesive. It's nice to have albums that are still albums and not merely a collection of unrelated songs. The closing track, Sea Within a Sea, may very well be my favourite song of the past decade.
The Eternal is a great retrun to the energy punch that mid-90s Sonic Youth produced and has felt some-what toned down in the last decade of their output. At the same time, the songs are not trying to capture the pop-like construction of the mid-90s songs they are reminiscent of, but rather have a good sense of the experimental skronky-ness and extended noise breaks that have been prevalent in all of Sonic Youth's career. The extended atmospheric noise break at the end of Anti-Orgasm, or the harsh, riffy guitars of Calming the Snake, for instance. Other tracks on the album also contain the sort of mellow groove that appears in later Sonic Youth releases, such as the final track, Massage the History. Basically The Eternal feels like an examination of the different styles and sound motifs Sonic Youth have gone through throughout their career without feeling like a lame rehash of past successes with no attempts at creativity. This album is quite fresh. The only thing that kind of bugs me about it is that it does suffer a bit of sounding like a random collection of songs, which is irritating when all their other albums work really well as complete musical pieces. I wouldn't recommend this as a starting album to get into Sonic Youth, but as something for the fan who wants to really appreciate the variety of their entire career.

I'll second the love for Primary Colours, that is a fantastic album to say the least. I've also really enjoyed Psychic Chasms, Darkness Come Alive, and The Pains of Being Pure at Heart. But I still have a lot of catching up to do with this year's music, a bunch of great stuff I haven't listened to yet.

To extend on the Sonic Youth stuff, I really like The Eternal. I enjoy a lot of the subdued energy it displays or moments like "Anti-Orgasm" where the music just dissolves from the formula it has set up. The end lacks memorability for me, but I still enjoy it and rank it somewhere among my favorites of the year (though not on my top 10).

I have to say I was really excited for basically all of my favorite bands releasing new albums this year, but I was worried of perhaps being disappointed by a surprising new direction. I have to say that in almost all cases, the albums not only met but exceeded my expectations.
I've listened to 44 albums this year, currently listening to #45 (We The Kings - Smile Kid) so I probably have a bit more listening to do but most of my money goes towards RB DLC.... I still have not listened to Crack The Skye, for instance.
My top 10:
Silversun Pickups - Swoon
30 Seconds To Mars - This Is War
AFI - Crash Love
Alexisonfire - Old Crows/Young Cardinals
Paramore - Brand New Eyes
Billy Talent - III
The Used - Artwork
Metric - Fantasies
Alestorm - Black Sails At Midnight
A Day To Remember - Homesick

Pearl Jam - Backspacer

I've been working on a top 10 list myself, but I've only listened to 11 albums or so, and my goal is to hear at least 20. So far I've gotten through:
Alice In Chains, Black Gives Way to Blue
Behemoth, Evangelion
Between the Buried and Me, The Great Misdirect
Breaking Benjamin, Dear Agony
The Dead Weather, Horehound
Marilyn Manson, The High End of Low
Mastodon, Crack the Skye
Muse, The Resistance
Orianthi, Believe
Pearl Jam, Backspacer
Them Crooked Vultures
I still plan to listen to the new ones from the Black Eyed Peas, Cage the Elephant, Killswitch Engage, and Silversun Pickups, and I've had some friends suggest the new ones from Five Finger Death Punch and Brand New. Anyone have any others to suggest?

I'll list some that I feel are worth at least a listen:
Bloody Panda - Summon
Dinosaur Jr. - Farm
Doomriders - Darkness Come Alive
Ganglians - Monster Head Room
Sonic Youth - The Eternal

I'll definitely check out Sonic Youth, but I'm not really a big Dinosaur, Jr. fan. The other 3 bands, I've never even heard of.
Oh, I can also add Shallow Life and 21st Century Breakdown to the list of stuff I've heard this year, but both were completely unremarkable and/or lame, so they aren't getting any consideration.

I used to be a huge LC fan back in the day. I actually enjoyed Comalies when it was released, too. Hell, I even thought a few songs on Karmacode were decent, but the new album is just plain dreadful.
Seconded. I preferred Lacuna Coil when they were still a metal band. They fail horribly as a generic alternative band.

I agree with Dear Agony being good though.. but did someone actually enjoy Overcome? ATR fell so far after The Fall of Ideals :(

I forgot to add Kittie's "In The Black" to my original list. Yeah, I know, music elitists like us are supposed to hate bands like Kittie hurrduhdurrduhdurr, but I enjoyed the album a lot. The band has really improved in terms of their technical ability, and Morgan has a fantastic voice.

I'd also like to add Horisont's Två Sidor av Horisonten. I've only listened to it once so far, but what a fantastic album it is.

It had a few good tunes, but I agree it isn't quite up to par with their earlier material. ATR is slowly becoming another hard rock band.
And btw, it came out in 2008, not 2009.

I didn't listen to this album until the new year, but I absolutely loved Sunn O)))'s Monoliths and Dimensions.

You're supposed to italicize the album, not the band.

The Resistance is probably my favorite. Also the Hot and Remixed Village People album which had a cool remix of Go West ^___^. I was looking forward to Ratitude but man was I dissapointed.
