Hello everybody. Yeah, I'm a RockBand newb. We opened our stuff about an hour ago and I got what I asked for - Rock Band.

Anyways, got everyworking working well, drum set is my favorite to play on even though I'm a guitar person, but I cant seem to figure out how to get the microphone to work. I'm not using the headset, just the microphone, and I plug it in to the 4 slotted USB thingy and it sayd that nothing is plugged in. If I can get some quick help here, I'll jump right on to XBL and start playing.

SO... Yeah, if anybody can tell me what I'm supposed to do with it, that'd be awesome.

Thanks again, and happy holidays.

You need an XBox controller connected to the system to use the mic.

To elaborte, to use the microphone you need to also have a controller synced up, and you use that controller to move around menu screens with the microphone, since there's no buttons on it.

On a somewhat similar note, does anyone know if you can chat online with a microphone if you're on the drums or the Strat?

On the 360 version the drums and guitar have their own jacks on them. There are adapters in the box for hooking your 360 headset up to them. In the case of my drums though the jack never worked, which is quite annoying, as that's where I spend the majority of my rockband time. Well it sorta works. I can hear people talking, but their voice is piped back to them over my open mic. I think the tip and ring connector inside is soldered together, but I haven't had the initiative to go look at it.

I vaugly remember the PS3 version being different in some way. I'm sure if you did a search you could come up with the answer promptly.

Well, I guess I could have been more specific. I have a 360, and a microphone. Not the headset, the actual microphone. It has the USB port that can hook up to the slots and stuff like that, but my 'box doesnt seem to recognize that it's plugged in. I've tried using the headset, and that works.

It's hard for me to explain it, so let me try a different way.

You can use 360 [to] controller [to] adapter [to] headset.

Well I have a microphone and I'm trying to do this, so tell me what I'm doing wrong:

360 [to] 4-slotted plug in first controller slot [to] microphone in first slot of plug.

If that helps, then see what I'm doing wrong.

You need an Xbox controller connected to the system. Without a controller, the microphone will not work.

You have to both have the Rock Band microphone *and* an XBox 360 game controller hooked up or synched up to use the microphone. The controller is what you use to navigate the menus and make selections. The microphone, of course, is what you use to sing into. If you don't have the controller also hooked up, then it will tell you that you're not connected....or something similar.

Does that make sense?

So like should I put a controller in the first 360 slot, then the 4 slotted USB hookup into the 2nd slot, and have the microphone, drumset, and guitar in there? Would that work out?

Slot position doenst matter. to use the mic you need the controller turned on and the Mic in a USB slot. The game will recognize that you have a mic plugged in.

You need to have a controller dedicated to the vocals. Plug the mic into the 360 (or the hub). If the drum array is plugged in, it will automatically be recognized as drums. Same with any guitar.

With vocals, you need a standard controller to navigate menus, choose songs, adjust sensitivity, etc.

So turn on your standard controller. It will automatically be recognized as the controller for the microphone.

Think of it this way: guitars and drums have xbox button, directional pad, X B Y A, etc. Microphone doesn't have any of these, so the vocalist needs a controller.

Just turn on the standard hand held controller. That will connect the mic.

ROCK ON!!!
