View Full Version : List of Songs for RBN Store Launch
trg007
12-13-2009, 04:35 AM
Well, it looks like the store is here! Here is the (I think) final list of content approved for the RBN Store - setting a new record for number of new songs to hit the RB platform in one day, topping even the disc releases!
Important: If a song listed here isn't in the store right away, check back in a day or two. For each song, the person/company who submitted it is required to send documentation to MTV Games to show that they've obtained the proper permission to release the song on RBN. If any bands/labels/authors didn't get their paperwork back in time, their song(s) won't be for sale until they do.
Current number of approved songs: 120
Format is: Artist - Title | Genre/Sub-Genre | Release Year | Author | Video Link (If Available)
Song titles in green = recently added!

FAQ
Q: Where can I purchase these songs?
A: You can't - yet. The RBN Store has not launched yet, but once it does, you will be able to purchase them from the Rock Band Network Store from the main menu of RB2.
Q: When does the RBN Store open?
A: Your guess is as good as mine. :) It was originally planned to be launched by now, but Harmonix is still working out bugs in the process. The latest rumored launch time is "early 2010".
Q: Why are there so few songs? The RBN has been in Beta since August! Shouldn't there be more by now?
A: There are a couple of reasons for this. First, the Peer Review process takes longer than you might think if you're not currently part of the Beta. There are a LOT of things to test for in a song. A song could be close to passing and then a bug is discovered that requires fixing, even if it wasn't discovered during the Playtest phase. When this happens, the Peer Review progress starts over at 0%.
Second, there is still a relatively small number of people currently in the Closed Beta, so songs aren't getting through the process as quickly as they will when there are more members. The stickied thread asking for RBN volunteers is intended to help alleviate this problem.
Q: How much do these songs cost?
A: Unfortunately, the price is not displayed on the creators.rockband.com pages, so I don't have that information. Most songs will likely be priced at $1 (80 Microsoft Points).
Q: Are the videos the same versions that will appear in the RBN Store? Why isn't there a video for [insert song here]?
A: Videos may or may not be the final versions, depending on when the author made them. To be on the safe side, always assume a video is of a work in progress version of the song that may contain authoring mistakes which were later fixed before approval. Some songs don't have videos because the author hasn't made one available, perhaps at the artist's request. If you find a video of a song that I'm missing, let me know and I'll add it!
Q: I listened to [insert song here] and I don't think it's [insert genre/sub-genre here]; it should be [insert other genre/sub-genre here]!
A: Genres can often be a subject of debate; however, the Genre/Sub-Genre info is set by the author and cannot be changed once a song is approved. There is a set list of genres to choose from - an author can't just type in anything they wish - so they may have had to choose one that isn't exact but is the closest fit. As a side-note, the Sub-Genre is only used for browsing the RBN Store and will not be displayed in-game.
Q: I heard from so-and-so on Twitter/Facebook/MySpace/etc. that [insert song here] has been approved! Why isn't it listed here?
A: All songs go through a 3-day "quarantine period" after receiving the required number of Peer Review votes. To be on the safe side, I'm not adding any songs to the list until they pass that phase and go up on creators.rockband.com as "Song Approved". Also, the band/author may have jumped the gun or mistakenly believed a song was approved when it wasn't. Or, I may have just not gotten to it yet. :)
Q: I haven't heard of any of these bands/songs! Where's the "good" music?
A: See that little button in the upper-left corner of your screen with an arrow pointing to the left? Click that now. The RBN is designed specifically to give lesser-known artists a chance to get their music in the game, and for open-minded RB players to discover music they might never have heard otherwise. Harmonix will continue to release a wide range of popular music through the regular Rock Band Music Store, so if there's nothing on the RBN that you're interested in, don't buy any of it.

Great topic and FAQ. This is a great look into how things are coming along for those not in the beta, and the work you're putting into making a topic out of it is appreciated.
Hopefully the songs already in the process are OKed for the marketplace soon too, and you'll have more to add to your list! I'm interested to see the variety of genres coming out. Especially the electronica and techno sub-cats as I'm authoring for an artist with some songs in those categories. ;)
P.S. Enosity that is a very clever authoring title. :D

I'll actually have more to add in a couple of days. A whole lot of ass-kicking happened on creators.rockband.com this weekend and a handful of songs got the required votes to pass, and several others are one or two votes away. :)
I'll add the newly passed songs once they're fully green-lighted by HMX in the quarantine phase.

I know there have been a couple of other hip hop songs that have shown up in playtesting, but I don't believe any others have made it to the peer review stage as of yet. I agree with you, though; "Top Back" is a lot more fun than I was expecting it to be, and definitely is worth a purchase.

Ha ha, would love to do some of their older stuff off Zebra Zebra! Not too sure how well it would work in a T-for-Teen game, though, with every other word censored. :D Glad to hear you're a fan. Their second track we've worked on for them, "Sestri Levante", has just been approved as well. With any luck, we'll have at least one, and maybe two more ready for launch.

The problem we're running into is since there is a limited amount of testers in the closed beta, and songs need a certain amount of positive reviews before they can move to the passed section, when real life or what have you gets in the way of a few people playtesting, then the songs will never get approved.
You can only review a song once and if everyone who is currently play testing has reviewed it, it gets stuck at 88% or what have you.
When it opens up we shouldn't have that problem, but that's the reason that more songs aren't getting pushed through right now.

By the way, I have been trying to follow a particular song, 'Stand for Something' by Skindred. Is there anyway that anyone can tell how that one is doing? And for the record, is The Future Soon going to be released as a RBN or even a regular Rock Band song?

I can tell you, because I worked on that song. :) It currently needs just a couple more votes to pass Peer Review.
And for the record, is The Future Soon going to be released as a RBN or even a regular Rock Band song?
It was authored by HMX folks, but it'll be released through the RBN. Jonathan Coulton has several songs being worked on for RBN, with various authors (HMX, RhythmAuthors, RockGamer Studios).

Do we really think $1 is going to be the going rate for RBN songs? I mean, I won't complain, but I really wasn't sure if any consensus had emerged among developers.
I don't think there is an official consensus, but it seems a general understanding that the greatest potential exposure is at the cheapest price point available. This may not apply to some better-known bands, and may change if the overall quality of RBN charts proves to be equivalent to Harmonix charts, but for now appears the most sensible option.
Food for thought: would you rather have 100 curious RBN users buy your song at $1, or be limited to 25 dedicated fans buying it at $2?

I can tell you that there are some charts that you would never know that HMX didn't author them.
Others have a different feel than a HMX chart, they still play fine and are fun, but HMX has a certain feel to their charts, kind of a playing style they set up that just clicks when you are playing it, whether you realize it or not.
Some of the charts have that feel to them, other's don't.
Again, don't think this means the other charts aren't good or fun, they just feel different when you play them.
You'll know what I mean when you play them.

Strange as it is, given my large support of the RBN concept so far, I think "Top Back" is my only 100% purchase so far. Other songs look cool and I'll strongly consider them, but that one is my only sure-fire one so far. Just wondering - "Magic and Spells" by Steve and Lindley was mentioned and "Backyard Buildyard" is done. Anyone know the status of "Magic and Spells"? I LOVE that song and I hope it's done by release day.

Something I think would be good would for a thread to be started for each band that has a song released on Rock Band so people can use the "thread" rating system as a way to review the music in store.

I see there haven't been any new additions for a few days - hopefully more are close to being passed. I guess it'll go much quicker once the Beta opens up, and hopefully that'll be soon. I thought the Beta would open by the new year, especially after Henry said it was about ready to launch a few weeks ago.

I think I remember reading something about open beta being open before the end of the year; somehow, I doubt that's going to happen.
That said, RBN was originally meant to be available in November, but unforeseen issues prevented that; the same thing may have occurred here.

Things have been slower due to the holidays, so there haven't been any new songs approved in a while. I'm sure it will pick up again after New Year's. As for when the actual open beta begins, your guess is as good as mine. :)

The Japanese Frog (aka Sara Anthony-Velasco) is a good friend of mine and I'm working with her to try and put some of her songs out for RBN.
As others have suggested I'm not a part of the closed beta, so... that song is at stage one I guess you could say. I'm working on it best I can until the beta opens to the public. But I'm glad to know you're looking forward to it. :)

The Glass Hammer and Amberian Dawn songs are insta-buys, as is The Heist.

One question, if anyone happens to know: how is it that none of the Jonathan Coulton songs that are supposed to be coming have made it this far? I'm particularly confused by the lack of The Future Soon, since that's the song in the sample project...
HeyRiles

The majority of those songs started getting peer reviewed before the JoCo songs. The Future Soon itself is being handled by Harmonix, so they're not exactly on the streamlined production plan that these RBN-centric companies are on - Harmonix still focuses on in-house songs too, you know!

And rightly so. It's just a bit puzzling that TFS is apparently finished enough to show as an example, but not ready for day one launch. Oh well, I'm sure by the time the Network is actually up, it'll have its share of JoCo.

Assuming you are using the RB2 software-only release on the 360 in NA (since RBN is currently only Xbox 360 and NA), that's 95 songs (RB2, Peace Sells full album, and RB Live '08 pack). That's going to be an awfully hard number to beat, but if the store opening is still a while away, it's possible.

Oh, right, Peace Sells was the same week. I thought it was one of the slower weeks so the target would be under 90.
Still, there's almost that many in the site pipeline, though it'd take a while for all of them to be ready and reviewed. There is whatever Harmonix decides to release that week, too.

At Valencia Community College in Orlando Jonathan Coulton played a show in our performing arts theatre (that just let out honestly 15 minutes ago); told us about his life, his rise to fame, what it was like, played about 10 songs, and answered a few questions. Mine was of course of what is coming to RBN.
He told us that "The Future Soon" is already done, and that "it should be available to purchase in the next 48 hours", whatever that means. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C3_6LKK0rXg)
He also mentioned "Creepy Doll", which is already being worked on (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HDxgV-JDDfk), and that he just had to upload the finished verison or something to that effect, and said "Code Monkey" was also in the works.
He told no further titles, but said he loves the whole Rock Band Network thing and is looking forward to doing a bunch more songs for it, as he loves the whole process of releasing songs that way.
Then I shook his hand as our giant group of nerds gathered around chatting and laughing with him and my day was made.
I REALLY wish he would have elaborated on that whole 48 hour thing. WHAT DOES IT MEAN?!
ethicalpaul
01-14-2010, 03:58 PM
Well I don't think he just blew it and leaked the opening date of the RBN store, so what I think he meant was that the song was submitted to the store just like the other (as of this writing) 31 songs, and is ready to go as soon as the store opens.
That's my guess.

If he said "available for purchase" he misunderstood (or HMX is suddenly going to open the RBN store today :)). After a song receives the required number of positive peer reviews it goes into a "quarantine" for a couple of days where HMX gives it the final stamp of approval. That's all that means.

I'm curious to see how many Canadian bands/songs are going to be on RBN at launch. We're a nation of rockband fiends, and so many of those myspace pages seemed to stem from the great white north... ;)

Guitar looks harder to pass than Thrasher, Caprici, Constant Motion et al.
Drums look harder to pass than What a Horrible Night... due to the ridonculous blasts during the intro.
I will enjoy failing it. Repeatedly.

Dream Theater has yet to confirm they will actually do this, so I doubt we'll be seeing anything from them anytime soon (although I really hope DT does appear on RBN).
As far as I know, nothing has appeared in playtest yet from Music Game Authors, so no WatchTower or Spock's Beard. Are they not in the beta? :(

Actually, there is a video if you click on this link right here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f8wTUcx6olA). It's old though. The charts have gone through many, many revisions since then. It's also a camera pointed toward a TV, so quality isn't the best. I'm looking to borrow a component video capture device to improve the videos.
For all the people asking about the prog rock bands, I want to strongly encourage you to check out the songs that are coming through the pipeline by Glass Hammer! Great, high quality music, recordings, and charts.

Yeah, i didn't put that link in there because it was such an older revision of the song. OP can put it there if he wants.

That is the point of RBN, y'know. Like, the exact point that HMX made clear from the start?

Seriously, people, download Universal Hall Pass's "Dragonfly (Symbion Project Remix)" as quickly as humanly possible. One, the song is beautiful and funky and unique, and two, it as close as I will get to having my favorite band of all-time, Splashdown, in Rock Band. (For the uninitiated, Splashdown was Melissa Kaplan, who is now Universal Hall Pass and has an incredible voice- she's done plenty of movie and video game scores, including the Assassin's Creed games; Kasson Crooker, who is now Symbion Project and was The Duke in Freezepop; and Adam Buhler, who is now in Anarchy Club.) I am listening to the track (on UHP's brilliant EP, Subtle Things) as I type this, and I can't wait to play it in RB.
Viva Splashdown, the best band my ears will ever have the pleasure of hearing.

I'm pretty sure you're just misinterpreting the quote that states, "Before the Rock Band Network, [Harmonix] could only put out about 10 songs a week."
This meant that on average, there were only 10 songs a week. It was not new information. When it was first said, though, people were flipping out, saying, "OH GOD WE'LL NEVER HAVE FULL ALBUMS AGAIN BECAUSE THEY HAVE MORE THAN 10 SONGS!" and things like that.
That's the only "ten-song" thing I remember reading.

i've seen some people have charted copyrighted songs such as a Miley Cirus or Lady GaGa... i obviously think those songs are not gonna make it to the RBN store unless HMX gets the licenses... not that i even care about those 2 artist i just mentioned.
my main question is... can you chart copyrighted songs just for your personal use like on the GH games? (with the difference that you can get vocals charts on this, and of course you arent playing MIDIs this time)
sorry if it's a dumb question, but i'd really like to know

So the charts will be different? As I have no idea how that drum chart would be approved as a Devil Tier chart.
I see how the bass would be Devil Tier, as it's basically a strumfest from hell.

Footloose and Fancy Free looks so amazing. I cannot wait to pick that up. Admittedly, I'm not that much of a jazz fan but I like this song. The charts just seal the deal. Especially the "vocals" lol.

Another awesome song just came up. London Ontario Metal represent! :D
Heaven Ablaze - "Parhelia"
I'm so glad I didn't spend the 4200 MSP I got for Christmas... seriously; there's now over 20 songs approved that I will get when the RBN store opens.
That guitar solo is ludicrous. Drums look really tough as well.

Yes! One of my all time favorite bands... But, I would rather have Fish era stuff. Hogarth starts sounding the same after a while... Anoraknophobia was the last album I bought of theirs.

Yeah, I pre-ordered it and got the special hard back book release and my name in the booklet... still thought it was week lyrically. IMHO Season’s End was the best and now every song just sounds the same because of his lack of ability to make changes in melody. The music is great, the lyrical melody is stagnant. But, that is just how I feel about it and more than likely that is a feeling not shared by anyone but myself. Afraid of Sunlight was a great album, but that was the album I started noticing how the melodies from it sounded just like the ones from the previous album and those sounded like the ones before it…
…Anyway, I will be downloading the Marillion song to support the band just because I had just a long association with them… 25 years or so, I will never forget walking into the music store, flipping through the albums (that is the large vinyl format) and seeing that incredible album cover on Script for a Jester’s Tear. Took it home, turned it one and was blown away. My love affair ended in ’97 with This Strange Engine even through I pre-ordered every album through Marbles or was it Anarakphobia? Which ever came out last because I have both of them in the special large format.
