Who was the most influential in the history of rock?

Kurt Cobain in Nirvana started the whole Grunge revolution, but hes dead now and for the most part forgotten

Dave Grohl of The Foo Fighters, Them Crooked Vultures, and Nirvana,
all though i like Kurt more myself, Grohl is obviously multi-talented and is still making music.

but Kurt pretty much changed the way we think of rock.

what do you think?

Most certainly not.

I'd say Cobain is way more influential than Grohl.

The simple fact that tons of people still discuss him and his music means he is FAR from forgotten. Most anyone who was even remotely into rock music when Nirvana was around will know who Kurt Cobain is. I'd bet the same could be said for younger people who are actually into rock music too. Even people who weren't all that into rock music when Nirvana was around are probably still aware of his existence, considering Nirvana's popularity at the time.

You're a laugh riot.

Anyone who's every walked outside knows who Kurt Cobain is. He was massive, and "Smells Like Teen Spirit" was the biggest song of the '90s.

no guys, pancakes is right. i mean, john lennon is dead now and no one knows who he is. same for michael jackson; he's become somewhat of a cult artist.

Nirvana: A very influential band that IMO demonstrated very good songwriting.

Foo Fighters: An unbelievably average band with extremely boring songwriting.

Grohl is a very good drummer. He should of kept it that way.

Kurt Cobain is definitely far more influential and was a much more dynamic songwriter. Grohl's only real shining moment outside of some of his minor Nirvana contributions is "Best of You".

Cobain is a more interesting personality, Grohl is the Samuel L. Jackson of modern rock due to all his various appearances.

I'll give the tiebreaker to Grohl, simply for Probot.

As far as influential goes, Cobain wins easily, and I'm a huge Grohl fanatic.

you can't say Kurt is forgotten, I still love and listen to Nirvana and miss Kurt. Nirvana was part of rock revolution and that would never change. Once he died, I think music changed and died with him.

Ask any random person on the street who Edgar Allen Poe or Winston Churchill is, and they'll also probably stare at you blank in the fact. That doesn't mean they are forgotten.

Grohl might be more famous because of how prolific he is, but Foo Fighters have always been pretty catchy, radio-friendly songs that didn't change the musical landscape.

Kurt Cobain is more influential by a landslide.

I'm sure it's safe to say that more people will know who Kurt Cobain is over Dave Grohl, but this thread is generally awful to begin with so I'm not going to really give an opinion/answer to the topic's question.

I'd still say that Cobain is influential largely because he died while in his prime. If he were around today, I bet him and Grohl would be on a pretty even footing, although a living Cobain would probably have pulled a J.D. Salinger by now.

Without Cobain there would not have been Nirvana, and Nirvana was the reason Grohl was taken seriously when begining his solo career. Thus, Grohl may have never been anything more than a really good drummer with underground/local bands...thus having no influence what-so-ever.

Grohl is awesome in my opinion, but the reality is that without Nirvana, there is a huge question mark as to if I would even know who Dave Grohl is today.

As far as influence goes it's far and away Cobain, no question. I prefer Grohl, and he probably averages out to be a better musician (largely due to the fact he's had more chance to be, on account of still being alive) but I don't think anyone with common sense can say he's more influential than Cobain

Cobain.

I would have loved to see an album where all three members of Nirvana got to write songs and not just Kurt. Sort of like a White Album-era Beatles deal. It would have been really interesting.

Grohl made quite a few songwriting contributions to Nirvana.

Yeah, a lot of the songs on the Foo Fighters debut are songs he wrote while in Nirvana, and he also played Marigold in Nirvana and plays it live occasionally.

All right, so, here are my choices.

Dave Grohl: Played more insruments than Cobain, and he didn't die.
Cobain: Changed the way people in general look at rock music as a whole.

Who was more influential?

Duhhh... duhhhhhh... Duh. Duh? Duh duh.

Cobain

Grohl you're cool you'll be remembered there will be an award thing in your honor (I'm too funny) but you will not be the legend Cobain is, you just wont.

When the Foo FIghters first started out I would say that their music was very interesting and if they kept going with it they could have still been great. But eventually the band just became another modern rock band. Yes, I still hold them in higher regard than bands like Kings of Leon, Nickelback, Puddle of Mudd, and the rest-but none of his songs are interesting.

I can live in solace knowing that Dave Grohl's side projects are now almost always better than the Foo Fighters. Also, I can kinda tell that the Foo Fighters will someday be in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame. I can just feel it in my bones.

You guys must live in a fairly musically tasteful neighborhood. No one knows much about good music where I live. The dudes like Eminem and Disturbed, and the girls like Paramore and the Jonas Brothers. Ugh. And I'm not just saying that because I'm prejudiced - I know what kind of music the locals 'round here listen to, and it is just bad. My neighborhood is so white.

Anyway, definitely Kurt. Grohl has a kind of annoying voice (it's too clear). Kurt, by contrast, is perhaps the best singer ever (because his voice is more rough and natural). Don't get me wrong, Grohl was a great drummer in Nirvana, but singers are easier to get attached to, as if you can actually understand what they're going through (of course, that's impossible - Kurt, like most singers, is an enigma).

I would rather hang out with Grohl, but I like Cobain's lyrics better.

Kurt Cobain was more influential but Dave Grohl is far superior as a musician.
