Okay, Stooges in. Awesome. Genesis in. A little awesome. Jimmy Cliff. I'm cool with that.

ABBA in over KISS and the Chili Peppers? Not so awesome. The Hall of Fame actually destroying everyone's expectations and locking LL Cool J out? You're kidding me.

I got a real kick out of this thread title. Nicely phrased.

I'm thrilled about the Stooges btw.

I agree, it's about time The Stooges got in, though it's nice to see ABBA make it as well.

Absolutely, one of my favorite bands, their induction has been long overdue IMO.

2nd for me after Genesis, but IMO the most deserving out of the bunch, then the Stooges

Mine is the other way around. Abba, then genesis, then the stooges. I love me some genesis and the stooges, but Abba is like heaven.

Zappa was inducted in 1995, but it has been awhile since any Prog. bands have entered the HoF

Damn, no Kiss. What the hell? They were one of the innovators (along with Alice Cooper) of the bombastic live shows, plus they've had their share of big hits.

Edit: Also, Eddie Trunk is going to flip over this.

...Um, Pink Floyd got in, and Frank Zappa was already in by the time they did. King Crimson and Yes, however, are out in the cold

KISS and Chili Peppers shouldn't ever go in.

Edit: Also, Eddie Trunk is going to flip over this.

Then he will mention how Metallica is the only metal/hard rock band in the Hall, despite Black Sabbath, Van Halen, and a good portion of the hard rock pioneers already in

Still, it would've been nice to have a jam of 'Rock and Roll All Nite' with Steve Hackett on lead guitar, Phil Collins on drums, with Peter Gabriel and Iggy Pop giving backup vocals

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is all about rewarding groups with high sales, and RHCP are one of the top selling and most played bands of the last two decades. They're going to eventually get in, but they may have to wait for every artist from the 50s who ever wrote a good pop song to get inducted before them though.

The Chili Peppers deserve to be in a Hall of Shame. Though to be honest, a good chunk of acts in the Hall of Fame would go there as well

That might be going a bit far... Flea is a fantastic bassist, and Stadium Arcadium and Blood Sugar Sex Magik are both above-average discs. That being said, Californication, while okay, isn't as good as is often credited for being, and the band's best albums are the ones that are usually summarily ignored (Freaky Styley and Uplift Mofo Party Plan).

Hall of Fame caliber, though? That's pretty tough to argue, although by the standards of the Rock Hall, they'll get in eventually. They've got plenty of time.

Umm -- the non-performers??? Anyone check that list?

Those are some of the very best songwriters in rock history.

To quote from the induction:

The Ahmet Ertegun Award will also be presented to an extraordinary group of songwriters who wrote some of the most classic, lasting songs of the 20th century and defined the “Brill Building sound”. Husband and wife songwriting team BARRY MANN and CYNTHIA WEIL, have had an extraordinary impact on the past five decades of popular music. Their numerous hits include: “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling” (with Phil Spector), “On Broadway” (with Leiber and Stoller), “We Gotta Get Out of this Place” and “Walking in the Rain.” Songwriting couple JEFF BARRY and ELLIE GREENWICH, wrote a countless number of classics including “Da Doo Ron Ron,” “Then He Kissed Me,” “Be My Baby” and “River Deep, Mountain High.” Additionally, songwriter MORT SHUMAN, along with his songwriting partner Doc Pomus (who was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992), wrote some of the most important songs of the late 1950’s and early 1960’s including: “This Magic Moment,” “Save the Last Dance for Me” and “Viva Las Vegas.” Prolific songwriter OTIS BLACKWELL wrote many hits including “Great Balls of Fire,” “Don’t Be Cruel,” “All Shook Up” and “Fever.” Lastly, songwriter JESSE STONE, who was an architect of the early rock and roll sound, wrote “Shake, Rattle and Roll” and “Money Honey.”

Far from the best list of performers (although I'll definitely join the chorus for ABBA -- esp. if it's "Dancing Queen" ), but that's an impressive and appropriate collection of song writing talent. And it's all about the songs....

CyanFunk
12-17-2009, 10:43 PM
Huh. The main performers are incredibly YMMV, but the nonperformers are spot on

Of course stooges and cliff got in they were pretty influential and abba is the 2nd highest selling band of all time (4th artist) so they were bound to get in. Genesis and The Hollies were going to get in one of these years too.

I'm joking man, I'm just not a big fan of the Cure. If you want, I'll add them to my Rock n Roll Hall of Fame. It's more respectable than the one that is already established.
