There's alot of hate around St. Anger by Metallica. It's not metal enough, the drumming sucks, James is out-of-key, repetitive. What ever.
Now.
I know the album isn't MoP, or RTL... But it is a pretty good album.
I find myself enjoying the music every time I listen....
So... I decided to dedicate a thread to appreciating St.A...

St. Anger is a great album. You cant compare them to MoP or RtL, because those 2 are completely different from Saint. And for the people who think St. Anger isnt metal, go listen to (Re)Load. Those 2 were the worst metallica albums ever. Overall St. Anger is a pretty good album, and "Shoot Me Again" is in my top 5 of best Metallica Songs :D

I didn't find anything off this album that I liked and I consider myself to be very appreciative of virtually any type of music, but St. Anger was just awful. I gave it a chance by listening to it at least 20 times, but it just wasn't sticking at all. The only song I somewhat can even tolerate is "Dirty Window".
And to the poster above me, I'll take Reload anyday over St. Anger either though I'm also not a fan of that album either.

I appreciate this album because it makes other artists feel better about their music. ;)

I appreciate this album because it defines exactly what terrible is.
I do not, however, appreciate the following:
Terrible, angsty lyrics
Drumming on trash cans
Awful guitar tones
Complete lack of originality
Poor songwriting
Songs that drag on and on
Bad riffs
Bad vocals
Bad cover art (taken from pretty awesome artwork by a great artist)

St. Anger was an experimental album, hence the drums. I think it brought us some good songs, though. I love Frantic, St. Anger, Some Kind of Monster, and Shoot Me Again.

What I liked about St. Anger: Demonstrated why a metal band should never go to therapy. Very underwhelming after the ten kinds of awesome that was Garage Inc.

St. Anger was a good album, yet poorly executed.
The music was good, but just like James and Lars have said "At the end of the day, we still ask each other... wtf were we thinking with that drum sound?"
And the off key vocals throughout the album Hetfield also regrets. St. Anger was just a good album, made at the wrong time.
Just think though, If they never made St. Anger, they would still have all that anger brewing in them, and Death Magnetic would've never been as "return to form" as it was.
EDIT: The videos in which James (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oU0peVypEAI&feature=related) discusses St. Anger [briefly] (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kObvzdk2x4I&feature=related)

I also agree that St. Anger isn't that bad. Frantic, for me, is in my top 10.

No thanks.
You've gotta make a really sucky album to have the next album make up for it (Death Magnetic).

Or you could just make two good albums. ;)

I mean I think St. Anger was purposely made to piss off fans so that they'll truly appreciate Death Magnetic.

'Cause honestly Death Magnetic wasn't that great. Metallica knew fans would appreciate anything after St. Anger. The mastering on Death Magnetic really ruined it for me.

studio metallica < REAL metallica (live)
even as far as St. Anger goes imo.

if it was anyone other than metallica, it would be legendary!! but since its metallica, it sucks because metallica is 1337 and better than st. anger.

No, if it was by anyone other than Metallica, nobody would have ever listened to the album aside of the mothers of the band. It's a piece of garbage.

a teacher of mine once said
"if you want to be a comic don't watch the good ones, watch the crappy ones, that way you'll know what not to do"
I feel St. Anger is one of those albums metal bands should listen to, so they know what not to do with music

yes.
this is my album order:
Kill 'em All
Ride the Lightning
Master of puppets
...And Justice for All
Death Magnetic
St. Anger
Reload
Load
...
Reload and Load arent really that bad either, but St. Anger is way better.

I loved St. Anger....then again....I can relate to it, the angsty lyrics and what not. It does drag on pretty bad at certain parts, and the lack of solos is severly evident, but I can't deny a good riff (at least I thought they were). I'm not gonna lie though, I'm not huge fan of their earlier stuff and this was actually the first Metallica album I ever bought. I haven't grown up with Metallica so I don't feel betrayed in anyway as some fans do, from what I understand. St. Anger get's a lot of hate, but I think that's the point so keep on hating it! I would LOVE to see St. Anger up for DLC considering almost none of it was on GH:M. Not so sure how well it would sell, but I'd be buying it.

I feel that St Anger was a necessary step to get us to Death Magnetic.
I love Death Magentic (not more than Master, Justice or the Black Album) and some of the musical elements like drastic time changes and tempo swings in that album had to be played around with in St. Anger.
Now, with that being said... I wouldn't pee on St. Anger to stop a fire.

Thrash metal is supposed to have bad lyrics. Specifically about moshing, drinking, metal, and animals capable of killing humans.

It's a pretty good album. That is, if you're looking for an album from one of the most influential metal bands of all time that has No solos, odd-sounding snare drum and mediocre songs.

Well, considering Metallica has always had solos be a heavy part of their music, I can see where fans of their previous work would be upset. It's only one of the many things that made them as popular as they are today. I can see where people are coming from. I think we can all agree that Kirk and James can bust out a beastly solo; it was just disheartening to not have any of that. Thank goodness for Death Magnetic :)

The strength (or lack thereof) of St. Anger's lyrics have no effect on the crap lyrics in KEA.
