Okay, so I got this game today for Christmas and I want to say I think it kicks ass. Second, I noticed that you have to pretty much hit the notes right on or they wont count, which kinda' bothers me after playing GH3 where the window is huge to hit notes.
Now to the question: I suck at doing solos. I never make it down to the bottom of the neck in time and by I make it and get my fingering, I've missed half-3/4 of the solo (lol). Can someone please tell me how they hold their fingers down there or how they get them down there so fast. I hold mine like this:
Index: Red
Middle: Yellow
Ring: Blue
Pinky: Orange
Help/suggestions/pictures/videos appreciated, thank you!

You're using the lower frets at the bottom of the neck for solos?
Don't. Trust me, just stick with the regular buttons.

I started to use them recently. Keep at it and you'll get used to them. I find they make the solos in the hardest songs much easier.
Transitioning to and from the solo buttons is not always easy, it kind of depends on the song. Even then, I prefer cutting short or risking to miss a regular note, but nailing the solos. Also, when you get to know the songs, you'll be able to move to the solo buttons a bit before, or to leave them a bit after, the actual solos, depending on the best spot to transition. If you know what note is coming up, you can also glance at the fretboard when transitioning, and still not miss the note. With a bit of practice though, you'll be able to move your hand up and down the neck quickly and precisely.
For me the finger positions are most often pretty much the same as with the regular buttons: what you described as the "base" position, and sometimes the whole hand down one notch (green to blue). It depends on the notes to play.
So, keep using them, you'll get used to them; I find them fun and useful. Give it a try.

If I know the song has a crazy solo section, I'll have my hands down there for the whole song. That way there's no worries about getting down there and aligned in time.
Otherwise, I just bring my right hand up from the strummer, since it's closer. After moving your right hand up a few times, you'll get used to the feeling.

Yup, I find it easier to use both hands on the solo buttons as if you're doing a solo on a real guitar. In case you didn't know already though, you CAN play the entire song on just the solo buttons...you just have to strum when you aren't in the actual solo.

The solo buttons are for your strumming hand to go tap. Use that and keep your other hand at the top like usual.

I find that awkward to do. Ive been practicing for a solid hour straight on the "Impossible Songs" section because well...the solos are kinda impossible without any practice, lol. So I was just goin up from 50% to wherever I couldn't get 90% on the solo and just kept practicing. I held the same fingering as I did on the top of the neck and I'm getting better sliding back up and back down.

When I play a song and I get close to the solo I look for a long note and then strum, keep my left hand at the top of the neck to hold the button(s) for the long note and move my right hand over the solo frets and push down the button(s) for the long note and then keep holding down the long note with my right and and get ready for the solo if it is that long and if it isn't...........I just get my hands down there as fast as I can. This may seem confusing but if your not stupid you should understand it. By the way I put my index finger=green, middle finger=red, finger next to the middle one=yellow and pinky=blue
